China Agricultural University 2016 Rural Development and Management Studies Master Program Application Guide College of Humanities and Development Studies
I. Introduction Under the support of Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Education of China, the College of Humanities and Development Studies implements the Master Program on Rural Development and Management Studies for developing countries, funded by the Ministry of Commerce of China. The college was set up in 2002, includes eight departments: Development Studies, International Development, Sociology, Law, Management Science, Media and Communication, and Foreign Language. The College has built up a comprehensive and multiple-level education system. The college has integrated functions combining education, research, and consultancy, with broad international communication, long-term international cooperation, and significant social influences. The education and research covers almost all the key areas important for China s development especially rural development: management, philosophy, economics, law, literature, and history. The college has 195 staff, of whom, 31 are professors and 86 are associate professors. The college hosts two seminar series, one is titled China and International Development, another is Critical Development Studies. These seminars focus on development issues, and also cover the fields in sociology, anthropology, political economy, politics, law, economics, and philosophies. All the lecturers are the internationally and nationally famous scholars. The Master Program on Rural Development and Management Studies for developing countries is implemented by the Department of Development Studies in the college. The department has 19 professors and 14 associate professors. The aim of this program is to equip the students with the international perspectives and advanced approaches for development research, management, and practices. The program is in a leading position in development fields in China. This program has played a unique role in China s rural development through its education, research, and practice activities. Since 2007, the development program recruited the international Master and Doctoral students, under the support of Chinese Government Scholarship and Beijing Government Scholarship. By the end of 2015, this program has recruited 133 international students (48 doctoral students and 85 Master students), from 43 different countries. Twenty-three students have got Doctor Degrees and 44 have got Master Degrees. 4
II. Requirements for the Applicants Target Applicants The program targets toward the following applicants from Africa and other developing countries. Of note is that the senior level applicants are given priorities. (1) China s business partners, to be recommended by Chinese Embassy in the home countries of the applicants (2) The government officials, who can learn development in general and China s development model in particular, so that they can integrate the development perspectives in developing and implementing policies. (3) The scholars from the research and education institutions, so that the program can provide education on development research to them, they can then apply these knowledge in studying the development issues in their home countries. (4) The development practitioners, such as the staff working in non-profit organizations, so that they can apply the development knowledge into the development practices in their home countries. Program Objective This program equips the students with international perspectives, advanced approaches to development research and management, and knowledge on China s development models and experiences. This program integrates the theories with practices, integrates teaching with the practices, builds up a student-friendly environment and provides students with the opportunities of practices, and encourages the independent and innovative thinking of the students. Duration This program lasts for 2 years. The program starts in late August of the first academic year, and ends in middle of July of the second academic year. Coverage of the Scholarship The scholarship will cover the following expenses: one round trip flight ticket, tuition, accommodation, and living allowances.
Credits The program requires that the students should gain at least 30 credits, of which: 24 credits for course work: 8 credits of obligatory courses,1credit of obligatory public course, 7 credits of required selective course s, and 8 credits of selective courses; 6 credits of other requirements:(thesis proposal: 2 credits, participating in seminars: 2 credits, practices: 2 credits) Thesis The students are also required to complete a thesis related to development issues in China or in their home countries. The program will assign an advisor for each student. The thesis should be in the type of research. The thesis should demonstrate the student capacities in applying development-related theories and knowledge, methodologies, to analyze and solve problems in development practices. The students should defend their thesis in late May of the second academic year. Graduate Degree The students are required to complete 30 credits, and pass the defense of thesis to be able to graduate and get their Master degrees. The degree name is Master of Public Management. III. Application and Admission All applicants must meet the following entrance requirements: The applicants should have had Bachelor degrees, and are competent in English. better that the applicants have working experiences related to development.. Application Materials Documents Requirements 1 Application Form Please fill in the Application Form for Foreigner Wishing to Study in CAU (download from http://studyatcau.org/, click forms on the top) 2 Chinese Government Scholarship Forms Please Log on to the website at http://laihua.csc.edu.cn, Agency No: 10019, the program name is Rural Development and Management Studies. Please register first so as to get your ID and submit your e-mail address, and password will be sent to your e-mail. Then enter the system to fill in your information and submit. Please make sure your name in the form is exactly the same as it is in your passport. After you finish, print and sign on it, attach your photo. 3 Graduation certificate & degree diploma Graduation certificate and degree diploma for undergraduate study must be original documents or certified copies either in Chinese or English. Applicants expecting to graduate should provide an official letter stating expected graduation date and the date for getting the degree certificates. 4 Official academic transcripts The transcripts of undergraduate study must be original documents or certified copies either in Chinese or English. 5 Personal statement 1500 words in English.
