2 INTRODUCTION Welcome to the first issue of the Jade Journal! This paper is the end result of a term-long class Know Your City facilitated with Tim Schulze s fifth grade class at Harrison Park School. We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we did putting it together. Harrison Park School, located at SE 87th Ave and Division, is in the heart of SE Portland s Jade District, a burgeoning multi-ethnic neighborhood. The District is in many ways vibrant, with numerous international businesses and a highly diverse population, including Russian, Chinese, Vietnamese, Spanish and English speakers. Yet, the area s struggle for equity is quickly apparent, as crime, safety and access to basic services continue to be large concerns for residents. During our 12-week class, students came together to research the history, sociology and changing demographics of the area, and worked together to write and create this paper. From interviewing workshops to photo exercises, and from field trips of local businesses to creative writing lessons, we created an open learning environment where we examined many kinds of ideas and media together. The experience has been deeply meaningful for the students as well as for us as teachers. We wish to express our deepest thanks to all of our amazing guests speakers: Brad Schmidt from the Oregonian, Mychal Tettah from the Community Cycling Center, photographers Julie Keefe and Intisar Abioto, Representative Alissa Keny-Guyer, Tio Polo Catalani and Gosia Wozniacka. We also wish to thank our funders: Black United Fund of Oregon and Oregon Arts Commission, without whom we would never have been able to produce this project. But, most of all, we wish to thank our brave students. We couldn t be more proud of them, their hard work and their willingness to share their own stories and perspectives on the neighborhood where they live and go to school. 3 PRESENTACIÓN Bienvenidos a la primera edición del Jade Journal (Diario Jade)! Este diario es el resultado final de una clase de un término que se tituló Conozca su Ciudad y fue facilitado en/con la clase del 5º grado del maestro Tim Schulze en la Escuela Harrison Park. Esperamos que lo hayan disfrutado al leerlo así como nosotros disfrutamos al escribirlo. La Escuela Harrison Park, localizada en el Sureste de la Avenida 87 y la División, está en el Corazón del Distrito de Jade en el Sureste de Portland, un creciente, pujante y multiétnico vecindario. El Distrito es en muchas formas vibrante, con numerosos negocios internacionales y con una población altamente diversa, incluyendo Rusos, Chinos, Vietnamitas, Hispanos y parlantes Ingleses. 6 FUBONN Kenariana Vicki The word Fubonn means good wealth and health in Chinese. by Kenariana and Vicki Fubonn is an Asian market. Michael Liu said that, Fubonn was started in 2005 because there was a need to make something that hadn t been done to this scale before. The word Fubonn means good wealth and health in Chinese. The store carries a lot of food from Asia. Fubonn also has marble Buddhas, paper dragons, and paintings. Fubonn is the biggest Asian market in Oregon. According to our interview with Michael Liu, Fubonn serves about 2,000 customers a day. People from all over Asia live in the area, including people from China, Japan, Vietnam, Korea. If Fubonn wasn t here, people from different cultures would be going around buying things individually from different stores wasting their time. says Vicki who goes to Fubonn with her family. Michael Liu is the owner and CEO of Fubonn. He speaks Chinese, Cantonese, Mandarin, and Vietnamese. According to Michael he has seen a lot of changes to the neighborhood in the past ten years. He says, A lot of new stores and restaurants have moved into the neighborhood. Fubonn is a great store, we hope that more stores move into the neighborhood. 5

8 PORTLAND CHINESE TIMES Hunter Joey Kevin The Portland Chinese Times is not just a newspaper,they actually care about the community. By Hunter, Joey, and Kevin The Portland Chinese Times is a Chinese language newspaper. It helps immigrants who can t read English get their news. It is one of the main ways that Chinese immigrants get their news. The Portland Chinese Times writes news stories about local issues as well as news stories from China. The Portland Chinese Times has been publishing for 18 years. The Portland Chinese Times has helped a lot of immigrants over the past 18 years get their news, a lot of people depend on it to get important information about what is going on in their community. The paper is the most popular Chinese newspaper in Portland. According to Kevin, a student from Harrison Park, his dad reads the Portland Chinese Times at least three times a week. The Portland Chinese Times is not just a newspaper, they actually care about the community. Rosaline Hui, the owner of the paper, has hopes and dreams for the neighborborhood east of 82nd ave. She hopes that people will work together, that everyone will get to know each other, and that we can work to keep the neighborhood clean. The Portland Chinese Times helps a lot of people. There are probably hundreds of people whose families read the Chinese Times. Rosaline says that the Times is a good resource for Chinese immigrants who depend on the paper to get their news. Hopefully the Portland Chinese Times will be around for a long time. 7

10 ALISSA KENY-GUYER Tylia Alissa chose her job because she is passionate about making positive changes in people s lives. We have a part-time music teacher at our school, Harrison Park. Alissa Keny-Guyer, our State representative, should help us fund a full-time music teacher. Alissa Keny-Guyer is the State Representative for District 46. As a representative, Alissa wants to invest in our children by creating a world-class public education system and by promoting healthy families and communities through health service and public safety. Alissa plans to accomplish her goals by making more laws. To get ideas for laws she meets and talks with people in the community. Being a representative is really hard work. But Alissa loves her job because she does important work. Alissa chose her job because HO US I-84 she s passionate about making positive changes in people s lives. Alissa Keny-Guyer is the representative for our neighborhood. Yet our school doesn t have enough money for a full-time music program. 12 HARRISON PARK COMMUNIITY GARDEN Dart Geo By Dart and Geo The community garden likes it when people come to garden. Before they made the garden there was a big open field full of trash. To build the garden they got wood, seeds, soil, and a ping pong table. Alex Korsunsky waters the plants and does all the work for the garden. Adam Kohl is the manager of the garden. They want kids to learn and have fun at the garden. According to Alex they also want to have more families and friends come to the garden to help. To get a plot in the garden it costs $10 or you can work and help to get a garden bed. Geo and Dart, students from Harrison Park, want to tell you about the Harrison Park Garden. We like to have healthy food because it is very healthy for you. The Harrison Park garden is part of the school community and we care a lot for the garden. That s why we take care of it. According to Alex, We can t plant trees in the garden, we can only plant fruit and vegetables to grow in the garden. The community garden loves when people come and use the garden at Harrison Park. 14 LESS ELECTRONICS The internet has a lot of positive and negative effects on people. By Stefan and Jacoby The internet has a lot of positive and negative effects on people. People can use the internet for good things but it can be harmful in an unknown way. According to an internet article, Is the Internet Making Us Stupid or Not it says that the internet is making us stupid. So we advise you to go outside more and get away from your computer. Some websites are learning websites and they re cool. Some good learning websites are and The websites can be used for homework and any type of math, reading, history, or science. The internet has a lot of time wasting websites. On most websites you can look up dumb things, like Facebook. In our opinion, Twitter is one of the the most time wasteful website. You probably didn t know that. Stefan, a student from Harrison Park, says that the internet is bad for you in probably at least 100 ways. The internet is bad and good in at least 160 ways. Mainly the internet is bad because of Facebook and Twitter. But the internet can be good because of the good learning websites. 16 APANO APANO wants to increase social justice and racial equity by advocating for fair health, education, and economic systems. By Samantha and Tony Samantha Tony APANO (Asian Pacific American Network of Oregon) wants to increase social justice and racial equity by advocating for fair health, education, and economic systems. Recently APANO has advocated for measure 88, which protects immigrants without drivers licenses. We recently interviewed APANO organizer Karn Saetang. We asked him, What is Apano and why is it so important? He said, APANO is important because we work to keep people safe and to make sure that the mayor and people like that understand what we need and that the needs of immigrants need to be fulfilled. When we walked into the large building that houses APANO we saw posters lining the walls. We walked up a red flight of stairs. When we got into the meeting room there was a large rectangular glass table with really nice chairs. In the back corner there was a couch. We met with Karn in the room and this is what we learned. APANO and Harrison Park teamed up to create a community garden. The garden is used by our school, refugee families, and our community. The garden allows the local school to get fresh fruits and vegetables for the school lunches. APANO supported the community in planning and creating the Harrison Park community garden, which allows refugee families and immigrants to get fresh fruits and vegetables, says Karn Saetang. APANO also helped organize the Jade International Night Market. The market drew 5 times as many Portlanders as the organizers expected. The market really exceeded the organizer s expectations. They had envisioned maybe 4000 people, tops. But had nearly 20,000 people visit the market over four Saturdays. It was a highlight of the summer for APANO and for the Jade District neighborhood. The Jade Market is one way in which APANO is working to create a safe and welcoming neighborhood. APANO has done some great things, including starting a community garden, which has helped us a lot here at Harrison Park. We think APANO is a great addition to our neighborhood. Recientemente APANO ha abogado por la medida 88, la cual protege a los inmigrantes sin licencias de manejar. Recientemente entrevistamos al organizador de APANO Karn Saetang. Le preguntamos, Qué es APANO y por qué es tan importante? Anna, a student at Harrison Park was walking down a street without sidewalks when a car came within inches from hitting her. How many people have died by cars and trucks? According to a story in the Oregonian, 12 people have died from cars or trucks hitting them. Chase, a student at Harrison Park was riding his bike down a road without sidewalk when a car hit him. Luckily he was not badly hurt, he only had scrapes and bruises. This is a problem that can be solved by having more sidewalks. How can Portland help? The city can give money for stop signs, street lights, crosswalks, speed bumps, and sidewalks. These items will help this problem. According to teacher Tim Schulze, We need to be safe walking in east Portland. We think even one of these improvements will decrease the death and injury rate in East Portland. Sidewalks would make East Portland a better place to live and visit. They would let people walk their dogs, ride their bikes, and walk to the store safely, and it would be better for the planet because people would drive less. 20 DIVERSITY We all know that SE 82nd is a very diverse area of Portland. It has Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai, blacks, whites, and many other cultures. That s what makes SE 82nd special. Elaine Justis By Elaine and Justis One time while I was outside I a saw a person of a different race playing wallball. Another person of a different race came up to her. She asked if she could play. The wallball player said no. The girl asked why? The wallball player said I don t like your race and color. As I started to say something the girl ran away crying while the other girl continued to play wallball. I told her that was very rude. She said, Everyone does it, why not me? this is called racism, it isn t fair. According to dictionary.com, diversity means the condition of having or including people from different ethnicities and social backgrounds. We all know that SE 82nd is a very diverse area of Portland. It has Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai, blacks, whites, and many other cultures. That s what makes SE 82nd special. We re concerned about violence caused by racism. People around the world have experienced racism before. And sometimes they have dealt with it using violence. Around SE 82nd people are hurtful of every race. We see lots of different people of different races around the street and other places. What we ve experienced in the past deals with a lot of violence caused by racism. That s why racism needs to stop. Racism could cause fighting, shooting, and could lead to more violence. Racism could go too far or get too out of hand. That is why we need to stop it before it happens again. Perhaps our community could find some place where there are games and things to do with other races. So they can see how it is to hangout with other races. So they can know that there is nothing to be mad at that other race for. 19

22 FOOD DESERTS Do you have to walk a long time to get to a grocery store? By Aniyah and Rachel Have you noticed that there aren t a lot of healthy foods east of 82nd ave? Do you have to walk a long time to get to a grocery store? We think there should be more healthy grocery stores! According to the Oregonian article East Portland s Frustrating Quest For More Better Grocery Stores it is important to increase access to healthy food, and that decreasing access to unhealthy foods should also be a part of the conversation. It s not fair that other neighborhoods have a lot of grocery stores and neighborhoods east of 82nd don t. We need more food markets. If there isn t a lot of food in neighborhoods east of 82nd, we challenge someone to build a healthy market. It is important because kids like us can gain a lot of weight by eating bad food. We need more healthy food and healthy stores. I think we should build one called Let s Get Healthy says Aniyah. Healthy food makes you have more energy, says Rachel, both are students at Harrison Park School. In conclusion, there are not enough grocery stores near by and as growing students we need more fruits, vegetables, and vitamin water. Many stores are too far away or close and unhealthy. 24 PARKS The question we re left with is, why don t neighborhoods east of 82nd ave. have as many parks as neighborhoods west of 82nd? Daejon Jeremy Joe By Daejon, Jeremy, and Joe We don t have enough safe and fun parks to go to. Parks are also not fun because they just don t have anything to do. According to the Oregonian article, East Portland Left With Sparse Patchwork of Parks, Beech Park in Northeast Portland, has no swings, no benches, no soccer field not even a path. This is why so many of our parks are not fun or safe. I can t go to the park without a grown up because they say that if I go alone, I might get hurt. says Jeremy, Joe, and Daejon, students from Harrison Park. To make parks fun and safe you need play structures, basketball courts, soccer fields, baseball fields, football fields, and a water fountain. We need police (that are nice and good) around the park so that if something happens to us little kids, the police can deal with it. According to Jeremy, Joe, and Daejon, When we go to the park we don t have anything fun to do. Parks are important to people because families enjoy the parks a lot. Parks are also important because people get exercise and play with friends. According to Jeremy, Joe, and Daejon, Parks are important because when we re bored, we can go to the parks and play and exercise. We hope Portland creates and improves the parks in East Portland. The question we re left with is, why don t neighborhoods east of 82nd ave. have as many parks as neighborhoods west of 82nd? 23

26 FROM GUANGZHOU TO PORTLAND The city I lived in was Guangzhou when I was in China. There were hawker stalls everywhere, so we could buy food easily. By Jia My school in China was a five story tall building. It was for students from 1st to 6th grade, and there were forty students in each class. School hours were from 8:15 in the morning to 6:00 in the evening, but we had a two hours break from noon to 2:00. We had seven subjects, which were Chinese literacy, science, math, music, PE, technology and art, and each subject was taught by a different teacher. We always had quizzes and exams, also we had a lot of homework everyday. I lived in a tall apartment building in China. I had a lot of friends. I usually worked on my homework after school. I sometimes rode my bike or played games with my brother. The city I lived in was Guangzhou when I was in China. There were hawker stalls everywhere, so we could buy food easily. The school I am attending in the United Stated in from kindergarten to 8th grade. I go to school from 8:45 to 4:00. There are about twenty students in my class. I live in a house. I sometimes do my homework or play with my brother after school. I go shopping or go to the park with my family on the weekend. In the U.S., I don t see hawker stalls and can t buy food everywhere, but the food is relatively clean. Jia 25

Teníamos pruebas y exámenes, también teníamos mucha tarea todos los días. Yo vivía en un alto edificio de apartamentos en China. Yo tenía muchos amigos. Usualmente trabajaba en mis tareas después de la escuela. A veces andaba en mi bicicleta o jugaba juegos con mi hermano. La ciudad en que vivía se llamaba Guangzhou cuando estaba en China. Había muchos puestos de vendedores ambulantes por todas partes, podíamos comprar comida fácilmente. La escuela donde estoy yendo en Los Estados Unidos es del Kínder hasta el 8º grado. Voy a la escuela de las 8:45 hasta las 3:00 pm. Hay como 20 estudiantes en mi clase. Yo vivo en una casa. A veces hago mi tarea o juego con mi hermano después de la escuela. Me voy de compras o voy al parque con mi familia ei fin de semana. En los EU., yo no veo puestos de vendedores ambulantes y no puedo comprar comida dondequiera, pero la comida es relativamente limpia. Mi escuela en China era un edificio alto de cinco pisos. Era para estudiantes del 1º al 6º grado, y había 40 estudiantes en cada clase. Las horas de la escuela eran de las 8:15 en la mañana hasta las 6:00 de la tarde, pero teníamos un descanso de dos horas de medio día a las 2:00. Teníamos siete materias, las cuales eran de Alfabetización China, Ciencia, Matemáticas, Música, Educación Física, Tecnología y Arte, y cada 26
