2 INOMUN : or the pinacle of adolescence INOMUN : ou l apogée de l adolescence It was a rough three days that we had in INOMUN 2015 Winter Edition. Between the lobbying, debating, eating an inimaginable amount of apples, socialising and making new friends thanks to the social events team (yes in that order), we nearly forgot who we were and where we lived before the event. Was it the tiredness of constant concentration from all the participants? Or the verbal jousts opposing the delegates? Or maybe the event was so outstanding and different from everything we knew that we got carried away? I can safely say that I was not the only one to have found going back to school diffi-cult and dull after these epic days. However during the course of this event, I couldn t help thinking about how IN-OMUN as a whole depicted so perfectly who we were as adolescents. There was this constant way of playing adults, wearing suits and being all serious and diplomatic but surrounded by an incredible need to be children. All the social events, every debate, every person had a part of childishness and innocence deeply anchored in their very structure. I guess we can say we all learned and grew from what we discovered about others and ourselves. Personally, I discovered I was able to take the floor in front of more than 200 stu-dents and defend women s security. I would never have imagined meeting so many mature and great young people of my age all in the same place. It was a real amazing feat from the organisers of INOMUN to gather so many talented people into one mass of delegates defending their opinions and beliefs in one single place. I cannot say anything more than thank you. Thank you for the amazing experience and the hard work you put into it. Entre les dé-bats, les quantités inimaginables de pommes que nous avons du manger, sociabiliser et rencontrer de nouvelles personnes grâce à l équipe des événements sociaux, nous avons presque oublié qui nous étions et où nous vivions avant l événement. Était-ce la fatigue due à la concentration constante de tous les participants? Ou les joutes verbales opposant les délégués? Ou peut-être l événement était si exceptionnel et différent de tout ce que nous connaissions que nous nous sommes emportés? Je peux sans crainte affirmer que je ne suis pas le seul a être retourné au lycée avec un sentiment terne après ces journées épiques. Cependant, au cours de cet événement, je n ai pas pu m empêcher de réfléchir à la façon dont INOMUN dans son ensemble représente si parfaitement ce que nous sommes en tant qu adoles-cents. Entre ce jeu d adultes de porter des costumes dans un univers sérieux et diplomatique, mais entouré par un besoin incroyable d être des enfants ; Tous les événements sociaux, chaque débat, chaque personne avait une partie d enfantillage et d innocence profondément ancrés en eux. Mal-gré cela nous sommes sortis grandis et nouveau de cette expérience car elle nous a permis d en apprendre beaucoup sur nous-mêmes et notre entourage. Personnellement, je découvris que je pouvais monter sur l estrade, micro a la main et prendre la parole devant plus de 200 étudiants pour défendre la sécurité des femmes dans le monde ; ce que je ne me serais jamais imaginé faire même dans mes rêves les plus fous. Rencontrer autant d individus matures de mon âge dans un seul et même endroit étais une expé-rience fabuleuse. Ce fut une véritable prouesse des organisateurs de INOMUN de rassembler tant de gens talentueux en une seule masse de délégués qui défendent leurs opinions et leurs croy-ances a la force de leurs paroles. Je ne peux rien dire de plus que merci. Merci pour l expérience incroyable et le dur travail que vous y mettez. Merci pour l entrain et la bonne humeur malgré les coups durs. Mille fois merci. 3 This was the second time I participated in a Model United Nations confer-ence, and I loved it as much as the last! I was in the UNDP committee (United Nations Development Program), where we debated about female economic and social integration in Sub- Saharan Africa s development. I was the delegate of Rwanda, and although at first, I thought that my coun-try wouldn t have much of a say in the debates, after having done my re-search, I realised that Rwanda had one of the best positions in the world concerning gender equality, with for instance 63 % women in Parliament. When taking the floor, it is important to be convincing, but also to be reac-tive to other delegates questions, which will usually be destabilizing. MUN is excellent training for overall public speaking, especially during the General Assembly, on the last day, where we need to speak in front of about 200 people. It is quite challenging to have to speak with the point of view of a country that isn t ours, but also very interesting, because we dis-cover a whole new culture and try to understand the political leaders states of mind. The serious atmosphere during debates is lightened by the social events team s interventions, who for example give us fun little challenges. And most importantly, they created INOMUN s mascot, the Unicorn! Maddy Le Page 1S C était la seconde fois que je participais dans une Modélisation des Nations Unies, et cela m a autant plus que la dernière fois! J étais dans le comité UNDP (Programme de Développement des Nations Unies), où l on débat-tait à propos de l intégration économique et sociale des femmes dans le dé-veloppement de l Afrique subsaharienne. J étais la représentante du Rwanda, et bien qu au début, je croyais que mon pays aurait peu de poids dans les débats, après avoir fait mes recherches, je me suis rendue compte que mon pays était l un des mieux placés au monde au niveau de l égalité hommes-femmes, avec par exemple 63 % de femmes au Parlement. Lors-que l on prend la parole, il est important d être convaincant, mais aussi d être réactif aux questions des autres délégués, qui seront souvent déstabi-lisantes. MUN est un excellent entraînement pour l oral, particulièrement pendant l Assemblée Générale, le dernier jour, où l on doit parler devant environ 200 personnes. Il est assez difficile de devoir argumenter avec le point de vue d un pays qui n est pas le nôtre, mais c est également très inté-ressant, parce que l on découvre une toute nouvelle culture et on essaye de comprendre l état d esprit des dirigeants politiques. L atmosphère sérieuse pendant les débats devient plus légère grâce aux interventions de l équipe des évènements sociaux, qui nous donnent par exemple des petits défis à relever. Mais plus important encore, ce sont eux qui ont créé la mascotte de INOMUN, la Licorne! Maddy Le Page 1S

4 When we first arrived, we all thought Look how this place is enormous!. We were all so classy! The moment when you receive your badge, you feel so excited by everything. Then, when you get in the amphitheatre, when you see the amount of students there, the outfits and everything, you feel delighted to be there and you just want to debate. Afterwards, you go to your comittee and do activities to introduce yourself. I met a lot of people there and I ll never forget them! I ll never forget IN-OMUN and all the people: we are just like a big family, helping and trust-ing each other while laughing all together. The organisers did a tremen-dous job and the social events team helped us enjoy our time more then if we had just debated. If you tell your friends all the things you did there and your feelings and they answer you Oh! That s sounds great!, you realise that they cannot really understand! Because they haven t been there! They didn t feel what you felt: neither the stress when you speak in front of everyone nor the re-lief and pride when you ve done it. Indeed, they didn t feel the excitement, the sadness of leaving everyone, they didn t feel INOMUN! It s been two weeks since we left but I still feel it in my skin, I still remember the good times there, that is to say: everything! Thank you for all that everyone has done! 5 INOMUN Winter Edition 2015 Et si nous refaisions le monde en trois jours Voici le défi que nous posait Inomun. Pourquoi au XXI éme siècle, devons-nous encore débattre sur l inégalité homme/ femme? Quelles solutions proposer pour résoudre la question de l immigration en Europe? Comment s inspirer du passé pour résoudre des problèmes contemporains, en révisant par exemple les résolutions de l ONU à propos de la guerre du Kippour en 1973? Rédiger, débattre, revoir et corriger pour enfin voter des solutions aux mille et un problèmes de la Planète Bleue Telle était notre mission! Nous devions embrasser et défendre la politique de nos pays ce qui donnait l occasion de joutes ora-toires animées... Cette manifestation nous a aussi permis de rencontrer des lycéens des quatre coins de l hexagone et d ailleurs... J en suis certaine : Inomun restera à jamais graver dans nos mémoires. 6 In November 2015 I participated in INOMUN for the first time. I had to represent Turkey in the Human Rights Committee which dealt with the current issues about the Kurd population. INOMUN was a very enriching experience. I had to make total abstraction of my opinions and concepts of the world in order to reflect my country s opinion. From our point of view, here in France, Turkey could be considered as a lost cause or a very old-fashioned country due to its ways of function-ing. However I still did my best to defend it during each debating session. Turkey was central in my committee as the majority of Kurd population live on its territory and is persecuted by the Turkish government. My aim was to make the debate last and get maximum support of the other coun-tries allied or neutral towards Turkey. I found out how intense and so tir-ing it was to follow and intervene during debate sessions. INOMUN really is for me an experience to go through. We meet many different persons, discover and learn many things about other coun-tries like their current situation and point of view on diverse aspects. We also learn how to improve or cleverly express ourselves with chosen words and arguments and how to connect with other people in order to obtain their support. I find it even more impressive knowing all the organization was majorly supervised by students of our age. I would gladly recommend INOMUN. I strongly believe anyone can fully participate, even people who do not feel comfortable in talking in front of others. There really is an atmosphere making everyone enthusiastic about debating and enjoying the experience to its fullest. I would gladly go back for another three memorable days! Andréa Prentout TES

INOMUN Winter Edition 2015 IWE 2015 was an amazing experience, even though it was my second time going to Lille, everything was different than last year.

7 INOMUN Winter Edition 2015 IWE 2015 was an amazing experience, even though it was my second time going to Lille, everything was different than last year. It was better organized, although some aspects of it went missing due to the events in Paris the 13/11/15. Last year, I was afraid to talk think-ing that people would judge me for my accent, my words, or my body language, because debating is a hard thing to do when you don t handle English perfectly, but this year, I knew it would be different, because I already knew the rules and how to play the delegates like a fox. I was confidant and perfectly happy with my level of oral English, so I knew I could be a tough enemy, I just had to speak up. INOMUN, though, is not only about debat-ing; it s also about having fun, and meeting amazing and inspiring people. And it was the case, even without the party that got cancelled, I met a lot of great people and I don t re-gret at all going to INOMUN, I hope to do it next year again, so I can see how I evolved and meet some more people. INOMUN est un évènement à ne pas rater, il permet de s épanouir dans un milieu qui n est pas forcément propre à nos habitudes et nous permet aussi de développer notre niveau d anglais oral, même si on peut avoir peur d être seul et que personne ne soit d accord avec les idées que votre pays représente, ce n est pas une raison pour se taire et laisser les autres faire, plus vous exprimer vos idées plus les autres s ouvriront à vous et c est là l esprit d INOMUN. N ayez pas peur de vous exprimer et vous apprécierez IWE 2015 autant que je l ai apprécié, car c est une expérience incroyable et cela permet de rencontrer tout un tas de gens absolument géniaux et INOMUN est vraiment super pour ce côté amicale et en même temps formel. C est aussi de très bon moments, même si la soirée Lilloise a été annulée à cause des évènements du 13 Novembre 2015, tout les délégué ont réussi à faire abstraction de cela afin de défendre leurs clauses et leurs idées, j espère pouvoir y participer l année prochaine afin de faire encore plus de rencontre et de réévaluer mon niveau d anglais après un an passé. 8 I really enjoyed these three days of debating. I think it was a very enriching experience. Indeed, we met many different people coming from all over the country and even from other countries like Germany. It was also the opportunity to study subjects I never thought will concern me one day. Indeed, I was part of the International Security Council and we had to deal with piracy in the South China Sea region. I learned a lot about the major issues in this part of the world and realized how hard it was to deal with it without creating other problems between countries. My favorite part was the General Assembly because I really felt as if I was France s true delegate. I wish I could have stayed longer and hope to return next year. Isadora Duhamel 1S J ai beaucoup apprécié ces trois jours de débat à Lille. Je trouve que ça été une expérience très enrichissante. D une part ce fut l occasion de faire de nouvelles rencontre. Nous avons rencontré des gens venant de la France entière mais aussi de par-delà la frontière comme des allemands. C est une des raisons pour lesquelles j ai vraiment apprécié le MUN, je trouve ça extraordinaire de pouvoir réunir des gens venant d horizons tous très différents les uns des autres autour d un même sujet. En dehors des rencontres, INOMUN a aussi été l occasion pour moi d apprendre des choses sur des sujets que je pensais ne me concerneraient jamais. En effet, je faisais partie du Conseil International de Sécurité et au cours de ces trois jours notre but était de trouver des solutions au problème de la piraterie dans la région de la mer de Chine du Sud. J ai beaucoup appris sur les majeurs problèmes des pays de cette régions comme par exemple le taux exceptionnel de chômage dans certain de ces pays. Ceci m a fait réalisé à quel point il était dur de régler des problèmes aussi complexes que ceux-ci sans en créer de nouveaux. Ma partie préférée fut l Assemblée Générale parce que, contrairement aux séances de débats en comité, j ai vraiment eu l impression d être la déléguée de la France et d avoir des responsabilités. Le fait d être plus de 150 élèves réunis pour débattre d un même sujet était vraiment impressionnant et en même temps très stimulant. J aurais aimé pouvoir rester plus longtemps et j espère pouvoir y retourner l année prochaine même si je laisserai volontiers ma place à d autres personnes voulant tenter cette expérience.

I liked fact that the issue was about a current problem : women s rights. Indeed, it makes everything more lively! Furthermore, I first thought INOMUN was just about work and debates, but there was the social events team to bring some happiness and fun! My favorite part was during the General Assembly. It felt like it was real and that everyone was a delegate. It was so serious and well organized. I hope that someday I can go back to INOMUN, it was for my part, a very good experience. 10 Participating in INOMUN is an unique experience for any student interested in the state of our world. It is a great opportunity to debate current issues in an incredible environment that makes everyone feel like we can make a difference. When we come home and take our delegate badges off, it is always a bit disappointing to remember that our clauses won t actually be put into action! What makes MUN debates so interesting is the possibility to have to be in favor or against an opinion that is not ours : we have to constantly take a step back and keep in mind our country s position on the issue. It consequently forces us to see both sides to each argument and find the right words to be convincing, whatever the subject is. It really is a great event for anyone wanting to meet incredible new people, find solutions to current problems and for anyone inspired by what our world s future can be made of thanks to our generation.
