4 EDITOR'S NOTE This month will have us seeing yet another fair share of rain and wind. The next largest typhoon is heading towards Ningbo in August so please exercise caution and use common sense during the storm. We have been lucky recently in that the storms have dissipated greatly before arriving to Ningbo. Hopefully that will stay the same. Either way, stay dry and stay safe. Besides the ominous storms facing our fair city, we have some interesting things going on nonetheless. All of our great monthly columns are here again, from our interviews about learning the Chinese language with Beyond Mandarin, our News Briefs keeping you up to date with what s going on around town, to our Editor s Picks of where to eat and drink around town, there s a lot to see and do this month. Our feature this month is about traveling to North Korea for the annual Pyonyang Marathon. The tour consisted of prepping for a running the race throughout the capital along with sightseeing, cultural activities, visiting a shooting range, seeing the border between North and South Korea, and visiting the War Museum. It was surreal to say the least. We also have a ton of great food in this month s issue. For delicious Japanese food in a fun and interesting setting, you can t go wrong with Bird Land. We also introduce you to one of, if not the absolute, best Dongbei spot in town. The food is often touted as Chinese country cookin and it couldn t satisfy more. From there, we take you through a tour of Nantong Old Street. The street is a great place to relax, stroll and sample great local snacks alongside all the staples you d expect at a permanent street fair. Our Nightlife section is a recap of the excellent Apocalypse Party at Bad Monkey. True to Ningbo, the costumes came out, the tequila flowed, and the music was pumping. We d like to thank the band JUNKS from Hangzhou for coming down to provide the perfect soundtrack and party music for the end of the world. After that, our Body and Mind Section has a great article about how to think about Flexibilty. It isn t something that is only a physical endeavor and our regular columnist delves into some great ways to think about how to think about flexibility. Once you feel limber and warmed up, it could be time to enter the 2015 International Ningbo Marathon. This will prove to be the biggest and the best of all Marathons to date in Ningbo. With prize money in the tens of thousands USD, expect a strong international turnout for this race. Everything you need to know to sign up is in the article. That s it for now Ningbo. 8 The BRIEFING Air Pollution Control Moving Along Action plan for air quality is happening Last year, the city issued a report entitled "Action Plan on Ningbo's Air Pollution Control ( )" which outlined some of the major problems with Ningbo's air quality. Since that time, Ningbo has seen each of its major pollutants decrease. The annual concentration of PM 10, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide has decreased by 24 percent, 45 percent, and 21 percent respectively, compared with readings in In 2014, Ningbo ranked 15th nationwide and 4th province-wide on the rankings of cities with the best air quality. Ningbo's PM 2.5 concentration was 46 micrograms per cubic meter in 2014, down 14.8 percent compared with The updated statistics showed that the biggest sources of Ningbo's PM 2.5 pollutants were industrial pollution discharge, transportation means discharge, and fugitive dust, with contribution ratios of 47 percent, 22 percent, and 11 percent, respectively. Electrical Grid Preps for Summer Usage With temperatures soaring, the demand for power in Ningbo is rising along with it. On June 25th, usage rates reached an historic high, according to the State Grid Ningbo Power Supply Company. Usage is up 18.8% over last June. 9 X THE WIRE / SHORTLIST / INSIGHT / BUSINESS Ningbo Railway Station's North Square Set to Open in September Construction teams are putting the finishing touches on Ningbo Railway Station's North Square, which is expected to be fully operational by the end of September. The North Square will be a major hub with shopping and entertainment, and will also serve as a transfer station from Metro lines 2 and 4. Metro Line 2 is also expected to open along with the North Square. Woodcut Exhibit by Japanese Artist Tomo Miyoko held in Ningbo From July 3rd the Ningbo Art Gallery has hosted a woodcut exhibition by Japanese artist Tomo Miyoko entitled "Walking in Ningbo." The exhibition features more than 70 woodcuts, inspired by various places of interest in Ningbo. Ms. Miyoko was offered an invitation from the Ningbo Art Gallery in May, and is the first Japanese artist to be featured in the space First Phase of Metro Line 2 Completes Trial Run Many parties had cause for celebration the morning of July 7th as the first phase of Metro Line 2 successfully completed its first test run. The line connects various parts of the city to both Ningbo Lishe Airport and Ningbo Railway station. According to officials, a good majority of the production of the subway system and its cars was conducted by local Ningbo enterprises, with nearly 100 of them involved in the project. AUGUST

10 The BRIEFING X THE WIRE Ningbo Plays Host to 9th Sino-Russia Chess Tournament The Ninth Sino-Russia Chess Tournament took place at the Nice dream Resort in Jinzhou District, Ningbo from July 13 to July 21. This year's competition was attended by some of the world's top chess grand masters, including Wei Yi, winner of the 2015 National Chess Individual Championship, and 2015 World Chess Group Championship members Yu Yangqi, Bu Xiangzhi, and Wangchen. Teams competed for a grand prize of USD 50,000. Typhoon Chan- Hom Contributes to RMB Billion in Economic Loss 1st Ningbo International Marathon Unveils Logo, Mascot Ningbo residents now have a face to put to the city's first ever international marathon, as the race's organizing committee released both the race's logo and mascot at a press conference on July 13th. The mascot is named Yongbao, which means the treasure of Ningbo, and sports a camellia, the official flower of Ningbo city. It also features an image of the Hangzhou Bay Bridge, an enduring symbol of Ningbo culture for more than seven years. Ningbo Grand Theater Welcomes 'Dora the Explorer' Chan-Hom, the typhoon which struck Ningbo in early July affected 605,000 people and destroyed 177 houses. The tally for economic losses directly related to the typhoon reached RMB billion according to government statistics. Industries hit hardest were aquaculture, fisheries, animal husbandry and general agriculture. The American original children s musical, Dora the Explorer, was performed at the Ningbo Grand Theater from July 11th to 12th. The event was the first time that Dora, Boots & Co. visited Ningbo, much to the delight of fans. Every one of the four shows was sold out well before the event. The show won a Peabody Award in 2003 "for outstanding efforts in making learning a pleasurable experience for pre-schoolers." 10 AUGUST 2015

Beyond Mandarin Chinese Training & Culture Experience Center would like to take this opportunity to interview some students who are studying in our school to share their learning and life experience in Ningbo. We hope this column can help you in some aspects. Last but not least, we look forward to your suggestions. Please Nicki with any comments: nickizheng@beyondmandarin.com. Thank you for your interest! The following interview was originally in Chinese, and has been translated by Beyond Mandarin. Nicki: Hello, Nargiza. Could you introduce yourself? Nargiza: Okay, my name is Nargiza, but it is difficult to pronounce so you can call me Liza. I have been in Ningbo for eight years. I come from Uzbekistan, my husband is from El Salvador. Nicki: Why did you come to Ningbo? Nargiza: We have our own business, so we decided to open an office in Ningbo. Nicki: What do you like to do in your spare time? Nargiza: I like exercising very much, learning Chinese and cooking are also important parts of my life now. I exercise every day except Sunday, I like running and riding bike. I also do some muscle training. Nicki: Do you go to the gym? Nargiza: No, I exercise at home. I have fitness equipment at home, but I run outside. Nicki: Did you get used to life in Ningbo as soon as you came here? Nargiza: I am now accustomed to living and working in Ningbo, but at the beginning we couldn t understand Chinese and Chinese people couldn t understand English. We had some communication problems, which sometimes made life a little difficult Nicki: I heard you go to local food markets to buy food. Nargiza: I often go to small shops, local food markets and supermarkets. There are many old people near my home who talk to me in mandarin, so it is not a problem for me to buy things in local markets and I enjoy it. Nicki: Do you like eating Ningbo food? Nargiza: I like Ningbo food very much. Because the Chinese eat a lot of vegetables, and I don t like meat, Chinese food is really good for me. Also, I can cook some Chinese food. Sometimes my friends invite me to their home to cook together, so I ve learned from them. But I still haven t gotten used to the weather in Ningbo. Nicki: When did you start to learn Chinese? Nargiza: I came to China in July I started to learn Chinese in September in Ningbo University for one year. Then I changed to Wanli University. I have studied there for half a year. Then I didn t learn Chinese for six years. I started to learn Chinese again this year. Nicki: Did you learn Chinese from your daily life in these past six years? Nargiza: I did learn some Chinese by myself, but not much. My kids can also speak good Chinese; their Chinese is much better than mine. Nicki: What do you find is the most difficult part of learning Chinese? Nargiza: I think Chinese characters are the most difficult part for me, both reading and writing are very difficult. Nicki: How do you learn Chinese characters? Nargiza: I needed to learn many Chinese characters at Ningbo University. It was too much for me. We didn t focus on talking, but I knew some Chinese characters, so it is easier now for me to remember new Chinese characters. I need to see what one Chinese character looks like, then I can remember it. Nicki: Generally speaking, your life is getting more and more convenient. Nargiza: I think life would be very boring if you didn t study, and did nothing. I keep myself busy, I do many things every day, I never complain about difficulties in life. If I have problem, I try to find a way to solve it. For example, if I don t feel good I go to the drugstore to tell them how I feel and then they give me some medicine. Nicki: Have you ever had any difficulties living and working here? What kind of difficulties? Nargiza: Chinese is my biggest difficulty. I couldn t understand at the hospital. I didn t know the food, but I have to say Chinese people have helped us a lot, like my husband s assistant, our neighbors and friends. Before I was living in Donghu Huayuan. At that time, my kids were very small, and I had many very nice neighbors. When I was busy with my husband s company, they helped me to take care of our kids, and they told me where I should go to buy the things I wanted to buy, so I appreciated their help. I haven t suffered very terrible difficulties. Nicki: Do you think expats in China should learn Chinese? Nargiza: If they want to learn Chinese they d better do it, and if they 12 AUGUST 2015

13 don t want, like some men who work very hard and are very busy, I can also understand them. But I think some foreigners are lazy, haha. They don t work. I think they d better learn something, if not Chinese then it should be some other things such as English, because many of them cannot speak English well. I think it is a very good chance because they have time now, and learning and working are really interesting things. And Chinese is not as difficult as foreigners think. You can make progress step by step. Nicki: Can you share with us a new expression that you recently learnt? Nargiza: I learned an expression recently, very interesting: yíwèn sānbùzhī, which describes some people who don t know anything though they should. I have found many such people, so sometimes I play joke with Chinese. Nicki: Thank you very much for taking time from your busy schedule for our interview. Nargiza: My pleasure. Mandarin Tips 汉语学习贴士 一问三不知 yí wèn sān bù zhī This is used to describe someone who knows nothing, someone completely ignorant. Example: A: 你们饭店的服务员怎么一问三不知? Nǐmen fàndiàn de fúwùyuán zěnme yí wèn sān bù zhī? Why does the waitress here know nothing? B: 不好意思, 这个服务员是昨天新来的 Bù hǎo yìsi, zhè ge fúwùyuán shì zuótiān xīn lái de. The laws of the People's Republic of China prevent a third party from helping to process residence permits. When we talk about Z visa, working permit and Residence permit, do you really know which one is which? Which is really for longterm stay? What about the rules and regulations concerning residence permits? PART1: Here it is, plain and simple: Step 1: Working License Step 2: Invitation Letter Step 3: Z-Visa You will use this visa to enter China. It is valid for only 30 days, so don't delay! Step 4: Working Permit Step 5: Residence Permit Valid for either six to 12 months. Congratulations! PART2: What makes a successful residence permit application? For a Company: 1. If you are the investor, it doesn t matter how long you will be with company. If you are an employee, you must stay with the company for at least one year. 2. Registered capital must be at least 1 million 3. The position would be difficult to be filled by a Chinese national. For the expat: 1. You must have a diploma from an accredited university. 2. You must have at least three years working experience 3. Your major, working experience and the position must all be related. 14 AUGUST 2015

15 Note: Proper preparation of documents is essential to a smooth application process. PART3: If I used to work in Beijing, now I am going to work for a company in Ningbo, do I need apply from the beginning or can transfer my visa? The answer is yes. But firstly you need cancel your working permit in Beijing. Then you hand over all the documents for working license, you can directly get a new working permit. Then you can successfully get a residence permit, which means you do not need go outside of China to get your Z visa. 1. Non-criminal record form original (available from your home country's police station or your country's embassy in Shanghai) 2. Health report original (available in Ningbo hospital appointed by the government of your home country) 3. Copy of diploma and CV 4. Temporary residence form 5. 19 Flying into Pyongyang happened to us in the middle of the night. The plane touched down in black and slowed to stop on the runway. We tumbled out a little dazed and were shuffled into customs lines to move through the airport. The guards didn t like the GPS function on my watch and confiscated it, holding during our time there and returning it to me upon exit. There is something about being searched and having property taken anywhere in the world. It could happen in Chicago and it s not the best of experiences. Having it done in North Korea is surreal to say the least. From the airport the inky night won t let us see anything of the city. There is this constant droning machine like sound in the distance of everything. A newer addition to the airport is being built nearby. The bus travels what must be old roads full of potholes. We are introduced to our tour guides, the people that will show us around the city and give us more humor than I would have imagined. Barreling through the night we reach our hotel, pile out, sleep for 3 hours and then North Korea shows up in the morning. And though there weren t many expectations from the correspondents, Pyongyang City The scale of the monuments at Monsudae are enormous. Here the two previous leaders are shown respect and reverence by citizens of the capitol.

22 whatever there was quickly faded to the myriad of weird things that were about to happen. The trip was more surprising than could have been expected. Your correspondent found himself in numerous conversations that were quite funny. The tour guides, Mr. Kim and Ms. Rim had a sense of humor that could not have been more from left field. Practiced jokes over the loud speaker, big laughs and quick smiles all made the experience of being shown select parts of Pyongyang enlightening and more enjoyable than anyone expected. In short, the trip consisted of sightseeing, every major monument, Monsudae, the Grand People s Study House, Juche Tower the tallest tower in the world, Kim Il-Sung Square, a foreign book shop, restaurants, stadiums, a shooting gallery where we fired air guns, the Arch of Triumph, a casino, the war museum, the DMZ and a micro-brewery. Yes, a micro-brewery where we drank with the other tourists and a bit with our guides. Then we ran around the streets of Pyongyang and high fived North Koreans watching the race. It was a surreal whirlwind of a trip and we couldn t recommend it more. Uri Tours ( has everything you would need to get in and out of North Korea and see the country first hand. 38 It can be difficult in Ningbo to find restaurants that don t feel like they ve been pulled from a cookie cutter mold, thrown together as cheaply as possible and shoved into a mall. The food might be great in a lot of these places but sometimes a restaurant is about more than just the food. It can be about the entire experience of eating, drinking and relaxing with friends. Bird Land in Yinzhou is a place that has done something interesting and novel with their layout that doesn t border on the extreme (anyone been to With Your 38 AUGUST 2015 Hand?). It s a deceptively simple setup that is hip, easy to spend hours in, and promotes a feeling of wanting to hang out for hours and try everything they offer. Which is a good thing because the food is delicious. At heart, this is a Japanese restaurant. The paper hanging off the bar ceiling makes the space easily look like a traditional ramen shop. But their main fare isn t noodles. The majority of what they send out is BBQ and sushi. Two things that go better together than you d think.

41 ADDRESS // 地址 No.588 Qianhu North Road, Yinzhou District (near Incity) 鄞州区钱湖北路 588 号 ( 近印象城 ) Starting with the sashimi, you can tell it s a grade above the rest from the get go. The slices are thicker and never is there that moment where the fish is tough or sinewy in the center. It s delicious and it melts in your mouth, exactly what you want from raw fish. One of the dishes that really pops is the seared steak sushi. It s a thin piece of soft beef on top of rice like normal, but the entire thing is seared, including the rice, to create a delicious crispy and rich beef and rice experience that is well worth the trip alone. Although all of the sushi is delicious, it s pretty straightforward, save the seared beef. The BBQ and small dishes are where this place gets a little more fun. There s a warm half an avocado topped with the requisite Japanese mayo showdown which was better than I thought it would be. I wouldn t say warm mayo and avocado with seaweed would be the first thing I think of when I m hungry. Nonetheless, it was good. There are all the standard street BBQ offerings, they re just a little dressed up. The vegetables are in much better shape than what you find across from Laowaitan at 3 am. (everything is better than that) Moreover, they do a bit more to dress up each one of the dishes. Small new potatoes are pre-boiled and then finished on the grill for a satisfying potato skewer that thankfully isn t just fried to death and then covered in the random spice shake. Delicious mushrooms, corn, and all the other veggies abound. The restaurant does not seem afraid to wrap anything in bacon. Bacon wrapped asparagus is epically better than any you get at teppanyaki. And bacon wrapped crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside nian gao is truly stellar. It s a great bar snack with cold Asahi and hot sake. But one of the true stars of the show is a smoked BBQ chicken served with whole grain mustard. The skin is crispy exactly as it should be. The meat not only isn t stringy, it s completely juicy and unlike other chicken joints in town, there is a lot of meat on the bone. It s like a BBQ version of roast chicken with mustard and lemon. Complete and resounding win. Add in that this place has been open for a year, the boss man is super friendly, and they have Asahi and sake for days, we can t think of a reason not to go to Bird Land. 42 Dong Bei cai straight forward isn't it Dongbei cuisine is sort of the red-headed stepchild of Chinese food. Many consider it to be unrefined, a term some use to describe food that hasn't yet caught the attention of UNESCO and isn't served by hipsters out of a truck. In reality, Dongbei food is a wonderful testament to the area's people and history a mixture of Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Russian influences that combine to form China's heartiest cuisine. Given its emphasis on meat, potatoes and heavier vegetables, it's also very western-friendly meaning you might be able to convince even the pickiest amongst your friends to give it a shot. Look, there are dozens of Dongbei spots across the city, and everyone has their favorite based on different criteria. Truthfully, there's probably not a whole lot of difference between them. But that's beside the point. Xx Dongbei Restaurant, which sits at the corner of Houmiao Lu and Jiangshan Zhong Lu, is the spot we would choose for a Ningbo Chinese food issue. We'll get to why in a bit. But first, let's tick the boxes to make sure we've got the degree of authenticity needed to make this place deserving of a mention. Beer boxes stacked everywhere? Check. Ever-present aroma of meat and soy sauce? Check. Gruff and to-the-point service? Check. A waitress who knows her baijius backwards and forwards? Check. So the atmosphere is right. The drinks are right. And thankfully, the food stacks up too. 老虎菜 (lao hu cai), which translates to tiger food, is a simple salad made from cilantro, Chinese leeks, green peppers and peanuts, and features a dressing made from sesame oil, vinegar and chili peppers. It can often be overly salty, but here it's just right. Beware that the flavor of raw leek will definitely stay with you after this one, so maybe bring some gum or mouthwash if you're on a date. Perhaps the most popular dish of the region is 锅包肉 (guo bao rou), which can either be bright, citrusy and crispy ADDRESS // 地址 180 Houmiao Lu, Yinzhou District (about a five-minute walk from Wanda Plaza) 鄞州区后庙路 80 号 42 AUGUST 2015

43 or heavy, soggy and a weird mish-mash of flavors depending on where you get it from. Thankfully, at this joint, it's the former. The breading on the sliced pork is light and crispy, almost like a tempura batter, and the sauce is just sweet enough without sending shivers through your teeth. If you hail from anywhere in the western world and you haven't tried 土豆泥 (tudou ni), change that immediately. It's not basically mashed potatoes and gravy, it is 100% mashed potatoes and gravy and may even be an improvement on its western counterpart. The main reason we chose xx as our Dongbei spot is because their tudou ni has the most gravy. Just check out the photos. Swimming in gravy was just a euphemism before. It is the salty, meaty comfort food you need in your life a surefire way to eat your feelings and enjoy it. As a last thought, Dongbei food is much better enjoyed with friends and (un)healthy amounts of booze. Not only does the boss lady know her baijiu, she'll recommend several different local bottles from back home. All of them are great and terrible at the same time. Take one or two up to one of the nice private round-table rooms upstairs, call a few friends and enjoy. AUGUST

46 Located just east of the South Train Station, this quiet little walking street is a great place to duck out of the hustle and bustle of the city and slow down the day. The area is a mostly full of refurbished older buildings that have been redecorated and reconstructed to retain a feeling of what an old market street in Ningbo might have felt like. On the good end, there are plenty of snacks, some good little boutiques, plenty of tourist knick-knacks and a quiet and peaceful environment. The snacks range from everything from the usual fried squid, durian, baozi world to more unique handmade candies and some actually delicious local flavor snacks. There are a few formal restaurants here serving noodles, seafood, longxia (crayfish or yabbies), and local Ningbo food. The boutiques mostly carry clothing and fashion accessories with some flair and fun. There are few worth checking out that might have something a bit different than other. But mainly, you will find the usual world of cheap souvenirs. What Nantang Old Street is missing, like most of these walking streets is a sense of organic growth. They all have that feeling that you re in a theme park or on a movie set. Everything is just a little too uniform or organized. That being said, the place is really greater than the sum of its parts. It s a perfect place for an early evening stroll in cooler weather. Likewise, just spending some time sitting, drinking and snacking with friends on the busy yet somewhat serene walkway is nice.

Drink up! Aperol '86 The Aperol '86 is a classic pre-dinner cocktail. Light, tart and slightly fruity, it's perfect on a warm (okay nearlyunbearably hot) summer evening. Aperol, the focal point of this cocktail, is a relatively new liquer made from bitter orange, gentian, rhubarb, and cinchona. At 11% ABV, it's essentially Campari's slightly fruitier and lessalcohol cousin. First, fill your mixing cup with ice, and pour alcohol in the following order: dry vermouth, cointreau and Aperol. Stir like you mean it! This drink especially requires some pretty heavy stirring to make sure everything is mixed well. Otherwise the drink will taste weak and well, we wouldn't want that would we? Strain the contents of the shaker cup into a chilled high-ball glass. Use a slice of orange peel to wet the rim of the glass. Decorate the glass with a piece of well-cut orange peel. 60 LG BT Q+ WHYWE JOINED SAFE S PAC E An Interview with Katherine of Big Bang Coffee Studio This month, Diversity sat down with Katherine, the manager of Big Bang Coffee Studio in Yinzhou. Big Bang hosted Diversity's professional mixer event and is a member of the recently-released Safe Space map. Safe Space is a program initiated by Diversity which identifies businesses who support Ningbo's LGBTQ+ through map locations. You can find the map printed in our June issue and on our website. How and why did you decide to enter the Safe Space map? First of all, I fully support and accept the ideas of Diversity, and the LGBTQ+ in general. Promoting diversity in all kinds of ways is very compatible with the things that Diversity does: we promote a platform for people who have different ideas, come from different backgrounds, and are willing to talk to each other. A cup of coffee can connect two different worlds. accept the ideas of LGBTQ+. Ningbo is a second-tier city, and unlike first-tier cities, like Shanghai, has deeply rooted traditional values. There are not that many outside ideas coming into the city, and it can sometimes be hard for older people to accept the ideas about LGBTQ+, whereas youngsters can be a bit more open to learning about new things. Why do you think creating Safe Spaces in Ningbo is something others might want to do? It is a way of showing support to LGBTQ+. By joining the Safe Space map, and creating a network of Safe Spaces, we also create a network of safety and acceptance step by step. In the future a lot of places can join the project, making Ningbo a better place to live for everybody. What would you like to wish for the LGBTQ+ development in Ningbo? How would you evaluate the present situation of LGBTQ+ in Ningbo? I think that Ningbo is still quite traditional, and there still might be people who cannot Of course, I hope that more and more people will join you! 62 BODY MIND Yoga & by Gabriella Buttarazzi FLEXIBILITY Yoga & This month focuses on what flexibility means physically and mentally One of the most common presumptions about yoga is that we must be flexible in our physical bodies in order to be able to do the poses. This is quite interesting to me since another presumption that tends to follow is that this depends on age. Our physical and energetic bodies are a metaphor for our mental states. I ve seen sixty year olds in my classes more flexible than 20 year olds, both starting as novices at the same time. So what could this suggest? Our flexibility in our physical bodies (mostly) directly correlates to the flexibility in our minds. In physiological terms, flexibility is simply the ability the move joints and muscles through their complete range. Flexibility in yoga, however, is an attitude rather than an ability. This attitude limited by our minds. The Three Limitations As far as I can see, the flexibility in our physical and energetic bodies is limited in three ways: 1. Physical ailments or weaknesses 2. Our physical design 3. The rigidity of the mind Allow me to elaborate on these three little things further. 62 AUGUST 2015

63 1. Physical Ailments or Weaknesses Some of us suffer temporarily from certain ailments, for example gastritis or indigestion. We also might suffer from lower back pain, tendonitis or muscular inflammation in the shoulder. These ailments or physical weaknesses might be chronic or acute. Either way, they might hinder us from being as flexible in our bodies temporarily, or at least as long as we ve learnt how to deal with them wisely and consciously in our daily lives. When in yoga, being mindful of your physical and energetic body is mostly the point, so we should really never experience pain. If you do a pose, like Janu Sirsana (The Head-To-Pose) or Paschimottasana (The Seated Forward Bend), but you suffer from lower back pain, you might want to lean gently, and not worry about your head not touching your toe. Just go as far as you can and stop when you feel pain. You might also want to adapt the pose by using props, like placing a cushion at the back of the knees, it does wonders for easing into a pose and relieving the physical discomfort experienced from lower back pain. This means that your yoga practice is fluid and changeable depending on the state of your physical and energetic body, and listening to your body is crucial in order to be in yoga and a state of Samadhi (a kind of meditative absorption). 2. Our Physical Design Some of us just have short arms, or a short torso, or a wonky leg, or one arm longer than the other, or one side of the body stronger than the other. We just do, and we all have our thing. This is our own physical design that might hinder our ability to do some things over other things. I find these things quite charming personally, and comforted to know that these little imperfections make us all unique and distinct. When in yoga, in Uttanasana (The Standing Forward Bend) bending and being able to reach your toes is easier if you have a long torso and shorter limbs, and it s similar for many poses. There are just some poses that we find surprisingly easy then others we struggle with, and viceversa. One of my students insists that she can t do Matsyendrasana (The Half Lord of the Fishes Pose) in the variation with her arm touching the ground because they are too short (and I think she might be right)! 3. The Rigidity of the Mind This I deem the most significant, and if we can master the mind, everything else simply falls into place, doing yoga doesn t exist at all. Dhyana Yoga or Meditation plays a huge role here, and in some ways, it s far more conducive to meditate everyday for our physical and energetic wellbeing that to do yoga alone. The goods news is, it s usually quicker to meditate. If you can spare 30 minutes a day, rather than 2 for a session of yoga and meditation, then all you need to do is work with the mind a little. Funnily enough, yoga in general comes a lot easier if you meditate. And there is a good reason for this: Many of our physical and energetic blocks in the body stem from a rigidity in our minds, and an actual energetic block. Physical blocks exist too, as I ve already mentioned, you ll probably agree if 1 and 2 resonate with you at all. Body is not stiff, mind is stiff. Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois When in yoga, often the stiffness in our minds restricts us from being in a posture with both sthira and sukkha (stability and comfort). Our physical and energetic bodies collect memories and beliefs and then maintain them, as though they are a natural part of the body. All this blocks the freedom we have in our bodies, and limits us, but they actually don t come from the body, they come from the mind. A particular position might be awkward or uncomfortable because it reminds you of something unpleasant, or because it appears threatening, or too difficult to breathe in and so forth. But again, the lack of flexibility is in the mind and not the body itself. In yoga, flexibility is thus an attitude than involves the transformation of the mind towards the body. I invite you now to distinguish between these three limitations in your own physical and energetic bodies. Only until we do this can we evolve beyond the limitations of our own minds within our bodies.
