1 APPENDIX A WASTEWATER TREATMENT PROCESS Every community produces both liquid and solid wastes. The liquid portion wastewater is essentially the water supply of the community after it has been fouled by a variety of uses. Wastewater may be defined as a combination of the liquid or water carried wastes removal from residences, institutions, and commercial and industrial establishments, together with such ground water, surface water and storm water as may be present. If untreated waste water is allowed to accumulate the decomposition of the organic materials it contains can lead to the production of large quantities of malodorous gases. In addition, untreated wastewater usually contains numerous pathogenic or disease causing, micro organisms that dwell in the human intestinal tract or that may be present in certain industrial waste. Wastewater also contains nutrients which can stimulate the growth of aquatic plants, and it may contain toxic compounds. For these reasons, the immediate and nuisance free removal of wastewater from its sources of generation, followed by treatment and disposal, is not only desirable but also necessary in an industrialized society. Waste water collected from municipalities and communities must ultimately be returned to receiving water or the land. Hence systematic treatment of wastewater is essential. Development of the germ theory by Koch and Pasteur in the late half of nineteenth century marked the beginning of a new era in sanitation. The activated sludge process was initially developed and was so named because it involved the production of an activated mass of micro organisms capable of stabilizing a waste aerobically in early 1900s in England. However, only within the last 40 yrs have design equations been developed based on the fundamental and scientific concepts of mass balance and microbial growth kinetics. The activated sludge environment is an aquatic environment. The constant agitation, aeration and sludge recirculation make it ideal for the numerous micro-organisms present, while inhibiting the growth of large organisms. Bacteria, fungi, protozoa and rotifiers are commonly found in activated sludge, though all may not be present in any one sludge type. Today, activated sludge system is the most effective and reliable system commonly adopted by all municipalities and industries in treatment all types of wastewater. There are many types of activated sludge process commonly used in wastewater treatment such as Extended Aeration, Conventional, High Rate, Modified a-aeration, Contact- stabilization, and Single Stage Nitrification (Oxidation Ditch.) Besides, many types of aeration/mixing equipment are applicable in activated sludge systems such as diffuse air bubblers, tabular, Jet, Low Speed surface aerators, high seep surface aerators, brush rotors, disc rotors and submerged turbine etc.

2 APPENDIX B OXIDATION DITCH SYSTEM Oxidation Ditch system is a modified activated sludge process operating in an extended aeration mode, the process uses a continuously re-circulating closed loop channel or channels as an aeration basin. The oxidation ditch was developed during 1950 s at the Research Institute for Public Health Engineering (TNO) in the Netherlands as an easily operated and low cost method of treating raw sewage emanating from small communities and industries. The first oxidation ditch process was using horizontal brush rotors as aeration and mixing equipment. Even though the system producing excellent treated effluent, it is limited in applicability to loadings from population equivalents to 100,000 or more, due to the depth of the ditch. This led the Dutch engineers to design vertically mounted surface aerators to replace the brush rotors to overcome the size limitations. The prototype was successfully commissioned in 1968 and was patented namely Carrousel Oxidation ditch. This second generation Oxidation Ditch has been enormously successful, today over thousands of such plants have been installed throughout the world with capacities ranging from 50 m3/d to 2,000,000 m3/d (PE 250 to PE10,000,000) for municipalities and industries. The Oxidation Ditch systems become a trend for biological wastewater treatment because of the following major reasons: 1. Most effective single stage process for biological treatment. 2. Low capital investment cost 3. Low energy/power cost 4. Low operating and maintenance cost 5. Long equipment life 6. Simplest, easy, flexible and stable process MOST EFFECTIVE SINGLE STAGE PROCESS WPCF Table IX shows a comparison of performances of all types of activated sludge process. It proves that Single-stage Nitrification (Oxidation Ditch) produces the best BOD removal rate i.e. 95%+. In fact there is no other commercially available single- stage process, either biological or chemical that will consistently achieve organic removal rate above 95% except Oxidation Ditch. Of course, many two-stage systems are available which can achieve high degree of removal, but it involves high capital cost and O & M cost. The main reason is Oxidation Ditch inherits different oxygenation zones, namely aerobic and anoxic zones; it enables high BOD removal, nitrification and de-nitrification, as well as phosphate removal by single stage process. Hence normally, a well design Oxidation Ditch system could achieve the following results % BOD removal efficiency Over 95% Nitrification efficiency Over 90 % Nitrogen removal by de-nitrification Over 50% Phosphorous removal Over 95% Phosphorous removal efficiency (if Fe salts are added) A typical diagram below shows how the Oxidation Ditch System works:

Any particles with a specific gravity less than that of particles normally trapped in grit removal are suspended by the 0.3m/s flow velocity maintained in the basin of the Oxidation Ditch. Because flows in the system prevent deposition, the Oxidation Ditch can be operated without primary clarifiers. The vertical mounted low speed mechanical surface aerators used in the Oxidation Ditch, have the highest oxygen transfer rate and the biggest power ratings (Max 160 kw per unit.), therefore much fewer unit are required in the system. As the Oxidation Ditch is operated in extended aeration mode, no sludge digestion equipment is necessary. Less space required due to deep channel design. Sloping wall type of Oxidation Ditch could save C & S cost for 50-60% LOW ENERGY COST WPCF Table 14-IV shows that the Oxygen Transfer rate of mechanical low speed aerator is the highest lb O2/hphr among all the aeration equipment. It means that less power will be used to treat the wastewater. The power intensity of Oxidation Ditch required (0.4 Hp over 1000 cu.ft) is much lower than the conventional aeration systems (0.7 HP to 1.2 Hp per 1000 cn.ft) Refer to the Table Shown. Therefore energy savings is very significant in the Oxidation Ditch system

4 LOW OPERATING AND MAINTENANCE COST Simple, stable biological oxidation system reduces operator attention and monitoring time. Low operator skill level required. Fewer mechanical components minimize failure potential and maintenance. Low speed mechanical aerators are robustly built and basically need no maintenance. SIMPLEST, EASY, FLEXIBLE AND RELIABLE SYSTEM. The Oxidation Ditch systems utilize minimum number of equipment, and the moving parts of the equipment are installed at sound and secure concrete slab. Therefore it is the simplest system, easy to operate and control, maintenance is convenience and safe. All aerators are specifically designed and built for anti corrosive and heavy duty usage drive motors and gear reducers, whereby it can stand high moisture environments. They are rugged, reliable, trouble free and durable equipment. The Oxidation Ditch system has a number of features that are so reliable: - It meets strict BOD and Ammonia removal standard - It can accommodate substantial hydraulic and biological shock loadings. - It offers maximum operations simplicity and requires minimum attention. - It complies with strict odors control regulations.
