1 高级学位课程 GRADUATE PROGRAMMES 前言本系为亚洲地区汉学研究的一个中心, 其宗旨为促进汉学与汉语学科专业的研究与教学, 为世界各个地区的学生与学人提供进修与研究的机会中文系隶属于国大文学暨社会科学院, 师资人员来自世界各地著名学府近年来, 每年都有超过 1 千名学生修读本系开办的各级课程本系开设的高级学位课程有下列四种 : ㈠文学硕士学位 ( 修课 ) 课程㈡文学硕士学位 ( 研究 ) 课程㈢国大与北大联办汉语语言学双学位硕士 ( 研究 ) 课程㈣博士学位课程攻读硕士学位 ( 修课 ) 的学生必须完成选修课程要求, 但不必撰写毕业论文攻读硕士 ( 研究 ) 与博士学位的学生必须在导师的指导下进行独立研究除研究之外, 此学位的要求也包括修读选修课程与呈交毕业论文正在攻读硕士学位 ( 研究 ) 的学生如符合要求可以在学习之第一学期末申请攻读双学位硕士课程攻读双学位硕士课程的学生将获颁发两个学位, 亦即新加坡国立大学 (NUS) 的文学硕士学位与北京大学 (PKU) 的文学硕士学位申请者之母语如非英语, 或其所攻读之学士学位课程的教学媒介非英语者, 则必须呈交托福 (TOEFL 580 笔试或 237 网上考试 ) 或雅思 (IELTS 6.0) 成绩以证明其英文程度高级学位课程一文学硕士学位 ( 修课 ) 课程课程宗旨旨于为华文教师华文新闻从业员及其他相关的华文文教工作者提供深造与进修之机会入学标准申请就读本课程者须具有下列其中一项资格 : 23

) 课程㈣博士学位课程攻读硕士学位 ( 修课 ) 的学生必须完成选修课程要求, 但不必撰写毕业论文攻读硕士 ( 研究 ) 与博士学位的学生必须在导师的指导下进行独立研究除研究之外, 此学位的要求也包括修读选修课程与呈交毕业论

2 (a) 中文系 / 汉学系二等荣誉学士学位或以上的学历 (b) 或由本院研究所委员会认可之其他学术资格及工作经验修读期限学生可选择以全部时间或部分时间之方式修读课程 : 最短期限最长期限 (a) 全日制课程研究生 12 个月 ( 一学年 ) 36 个月 ( 三学年 ) (b) 兼读课程研究生 24 个月 ( 两学年 ) 48 个月 ( 四学年 ) 修读课程学生必须修读十个单元的课程, 不必撰写学位论文全日制课程学生每学期须修读最少三个单元, 最多五个单元兼读课程学生每学期须修读最少一个单元, 最多三个单元考试㈠除了 CH6227 之外, 其他单元的课都没有期末考试㈡学生所选修的十个单元, 成绩必须全部及格㈢学生的必修单元如不及格, 考试委员会可准其重修若选修单元不及格, 学生则可在下一学期重修同一单元或选读另一选修单元㈣任何学生若连续两个学期成绩的累计平均点 (CAP) 低于 2.5, 或连续三个学期的成绩的累计平均点低于 3.0, 或于规定之修读期限内有超过两个单元考试不及格者, 则须停学二文学硕士学位课程 ( 研究 ) 课程申请者须拥有中文系或中国历史哲学相关学系二等甲级荣誉学士学位, 并有能力对其所提出的研究课题进行独立研究研究生必须在最少一年至最多三年时间内完成约 6 万至 13.5 万字的学位论文此外还须修读四个单元课程, 其中包括必修课程 CH6770, 并且连续两个学期的成绩的累计平均点必须不低于 2.5 或连续三个学期的成绩的累计平均点必须不低于 3.0 本课程的期限最少一年, 最多三年, 学生可以选修全日制课程或兼读课程有关本系此项学位课程的修课单元, 请参阅课程单元三汉语语言学双学位硕士 ( 研究 ) 课程 [ 本系与北京大学联办 ] 修读文学硕士学位研究课程的研究生, 在本系第一学期内完成四门科目的 CAP 不低于 3.5, 又符合相关标准, 即可提出申请攻读由本系与北京大学中国语言文学系联合开办的汉语语言学双学位硕士 ( 研究 ) 课程本课程的学生在国大和北大完成规定的八门课程并通过毕业论文的答辩后, 将由国大和北大两校分别颁发硕士学位研究生必须在本系修读至少四门课程, 包括必修课 CH6770; 在北大全日制学习一个学期, 修读至少四门汉语课程, 最后, 还必须完成一篇 6 万至 10 万字的汉语语言学领域的硕士学位论文, 并成功通过论文答辩每个学生的论文须由国大与北大各派一名教授联合指导, 并经由两校教授联合评审 24

6 INTRODUCTION The Department has developed into one of the leading centres for Chinese Studies in Asia. It has played an important role in bridging Chinese cultural heritage and modern Singapore, promoting cutting-edge research in Chinese studies, and providing effective bilingual training to students from different cultural backgrounds. As one of the departments in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the Department of Chinese Studies has full-time teaching staff who graduated from prestigious universities in different parts of the world. In recent years, about 1000 undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled each year for all levels of study in the Department. At the graduate level, the following programmes are offered: 1. M.A. by Coursework 2. M.A. by Research 3. Double Degree M.A. by Research in Chinese Language with Peking University 4. Ph.D. The M.A. by Coursework programme is structured around course requirements with no dissertation requirement. For the M.A. by Research and Ph.D. programmes, the degree is awarded on the basis of supervised research, modular requirements and the submission of a thesis for examination. For the Double Degree M.A. programme, M.A. by Research students who qualify may apply to enter the programme at the end of his or her first semester. Upon graduation, they will be conferred 2 degrees, one from NUS and the other from Peking University. Applicants whose native tongue or medium of undergraduate instruction is not English should submit TOEFL 580 for the paper-based test or 237 for the computer-based test or IELTS 6.0 scores as evidence of their proficiency in the English language. 1. DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS (M.A) BY COURSEWORK Course Objective To provide graduate training for candidates from the educational, journalistic and other relevant professions that use Chinese as the major working language. Admission Requirements Applicants seeking admission to the course must have either: (a) an Honours degree in Chinese Studies (Second Class and above); or (b) such other qualifications and experience subject to approval by the Board of Graduate Studies Candidature The course may be offered on a full-time or part-time basis. 28

7 (a) Full-time candidate (b) Part-time candidate Minimum Period 12 months (one academic year) 24 months (two academic years) Maximum Period 36 months (three academic years) 48 months (four academic years) Selection of Modules Candidates will have to read 10 modules. They are not required to write a dissertation. A full-time candidate must take at least three modules in a semester and may take up to a maximum of five modules in a semester. A part-time candidate must take at least one module in a semester and may take up to a maximum of three modules in a semester. Examination Matters (1) There will be no final examinations for graduate modules except CH6227 (2) A candidate must pass all the modules he/she has selected. (3) A candidate who fails an essential module may be permitted to retake the same essential module in a subsequent semester. A candidate who fails an elective module may be permitted to either retake the same elective module, or replace the failed module by taking another elective module in a subsequent semester (4) A candidate will be required to terminate his/her course of study if he/she obtains a CAP of less than 2.5 for two consecutive semesters; or less than 3.0 for three consecutive semesters; or he/she fails in more than 2 modules throughout his/her course of study For the latest information, please refer to the following website: 2. DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS (M.A) BY RESEARCH Applicants for the degree of Master of Arts by Research must possess a Honours degree in Chinese Studies (Second Class and above) and the ability to pursue independent research in the candidate's proposed field of advanced study. Candidates are required to complete a thesis of 60, ,000 characters, within a minimum period of 1 year or a maximum period of 3 years. In addition, they must read and pass 4 coursework modules. One of the 4 modules must include CH6770. The CAP should not fall below 2.5 for two consecutive semesters or 3.0 for three consecutive semesters. The minimum period of candidature is 1 year and the maximum, 3 years. The course may be offered on a full-time or part-time basis. 8 3. DOUBLE DEGREE M.A. BY RESEARCH IN CHINESE LANGUAGE WITH PEKING UNIVERSITY (PKU) All enrolled M.A. by Research students whose area of research is Chinese language may opt to enter this programme after the first semester of studies, provided that the CAP obtained is no lower than 3.5 and must meet other requirements. Candidates are required to complete a thesis of 60,000 to 100,000 characters, within a minimum period of 1 year or a maximum period of 3 years. There will be joint supervision by two faculty members, one from each university. In addition, they must read and pass 8 coursework modules; of which 4 are to be read at NUS (which must include CH6770) and 4 at PKU. This means that all students must attend one semester on a full-time basis in the host university where they will read required modules. All candidates must pass an oral defence of the thesis towards the end of their candidature. The oral defence will be conducted separately by the home university, with members appointed jointly. Upon completion of these requirements, students will receive 2 degrees, one from NUS and the other from PKU. 4. DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (Ph.D.) The minimum qualifications for admission as a candidate to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy are a Master s degree and the ability to pursue independent research in the candidate s proposed field of advanced study. The minimum period of candidature is 2 years and the maximum, 5 years. The course may be offered on a full-time or part-time basis. Candidates are required to submit a thesis of 150, ,000 characters for examination at the end of the course. In addition, they must read and pass 6 coursework modules. One of the six modules must include CH6770. The candidates CAP should not fall below 3.0 for two consecutive semesters or 3.5 for three consecutive semesters. Part-time and full-time candidates are expected to sit for the Ph.D. Qualifying Examination (QE) before the end of the 24 th month of candidature, after completing the coursework requirement with a minimum CAP of 3.5 and if the candidate s first language is not English, obtain satisfactory grades (at least grade C) in the Centre for English Language Communication graduate English modules at intermediate level. The Qualifying Examination comprises a comprehensive examination, and an oral defence of the Ph.D thesis proposal (30-page to 50-page). Each scholarship carries a monthly stipend of S$1,500 for M.A. candidate, $2,000 - $2,500 for Ph.D. candidate. Research scholars in a Ph.D. programme who pass their Ph.D. Qualifying Examination, within the stipulated period during their candidature, are eligible for an additional top-up of $500 per month for a specific period.
