3 6 to 13 Points Many HKCEE candidates are particularly sensitive to "14 points" because in Stage I of the Secondary Six Admission Procedure set by the Education Bureau, a candidate who has obtained 14 points or above will very likely be automatically admitted by his own school if it has sufficient S6 places. He will be spared the trouble of hunting for an S6 place and switching to another school to study at S6. However, if a candidate s HKCEE result has only met the minimum requirement for progressing to S6, i.e. Level 2 or above in Chinese Language and English Language, passes or above in 4 other subjects, or a total point score in between 6 to 13, he will have to compete for an S6 place in Stage III to V. Before he hunts for an S6 place, he should first consider carefully his ability, identify his goal and know the external limitations. In fact, it is not easy for a candidate to secure an S6 place if he has obtained less than 14 points. According to the HKEAA s report on the HKCEE last year, about school candidates sat for the HKCEE in 2009 and there were only about subsidised S6 places in government and aided secondary schools. Of these candidates, about obtained 14 points and obtained 13 points. As there were not ample S6 places, many candidates failed to secure an S6 place. Even if a candidate has managed to secure an S6 place, he should consider whether he is suitable for taking a matriculation course leading to the HKALE. Take the following data as an example. Of the candidates who obtained 13 points from six subjects in the 2007 HKCEE, only 30% got HKALE results in 2009 that met the minimum requirement for admission to university. Of the candidates who obtained six to ten points from six subjects in the 2007 HKCEE, less than 10% got HKALE results in 2009 that met the minimum requirement for admission to university. Their chance of admission to university through JUPAS was remote. So, why couldn t students with similar situation consider their aspirations and interests and apply for practical, highly recognised courses or those that could articulate with university such as Higher Diploma and Diploma courses from recognised local professional development institutes, such as those under the Vocational Training Council (VTC), Associate Degree If I cannot obtain 14 points, what should I do? These courses are professionally recognised to a certain extent and the qualifications awarded after completion of some of the courses are considered by local or overseas universities as one of the enrolment criteria for their undergraduate courses. The number of places of programmes offered to S5 graduates by other academic institutions will also increase, such as the School of Continuing and Professional Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, number of places increased from to S5 graduates should make plans as soon as possible according to their expected HKCEE results and interests. They may also consider applying for practical vocational training courses such as the dental technician training courses offered by the Prince Philip Dental Hospital. Those who wish to further their studies and do not mind leaving Hong Kong may consider applying for pre-university programmes in our neighbouring Mainland where school fees and living costs are lower. In July and August each year, Mainland institutions invite students in Hong Kong to apply for their pre- 17

4 university programmes. With closer ties and increasing economic interactions between Hong Kong and the Mainland, more and more Hong Kong students go to the Mainland to attend universities. In planning to study abroad, apart from overseas countries, students may consider whether they are suitable for studying in the Mainland. 0 to 5 Points At present, students with unsatisfactory HKCEE results may also choose other study pathways. Students who have attained 3 passes in the HKCEE and Level 2 in Chinese Language and English Language may apply for 3-year higher diploma or pre-associate degree programmes offered by universities schools of continuing and professional studies. Even if they are unable to attain such results, they may also consider joining Project Yi Jin. In the past, I did not support the idea of joining Project Yi Jin because the qualification obtained upon completion of the project was only equivalent to 5 passes in the HKCEE; although with this qualification students may apply for civil service vacancies, the tuition fee involved is quite expensive. However, the situation is different this year. Students may refer to the relevant article/topics on Repeating S5 or Switching to S5 NSS curriculum in this Handbook and I am not going to repeat here. If students wish to obtain a recognised minimum qualification for pursuing further studies in Hong Kong, Project Yi Jin is also a good choice. In fact, the number of students joining Project Yi Jin has doubled in the last two years and many graduates of Project Yi Jin have been able to secure a job in disciplined services or continue their studies in diploma courses. Apart from Project Yi Jin, there are also other choices such as the foundation certificate courses of the VTC, courses of the Construction Industry Council Training Academy, Modern Apprenticeship Scheme, etc. Moreover, in view of the increasing demand for medical services in recent years, the Hospital Authority (HA) has been offering the Enrolled Nurse Training Programme again from 2008 onwards. The date of application for the Programme in 2010 is July. You may contact the HA for details of the Programme. I found that some students had no goals at all. Nor did they have ideals and self-confidence. They were convinced that their HKCEE results would not meet the requirement for enrolling in Diploma or Certificate courses. Before the release of the HKCEE results, they did not do any preparation. After the release of the HKCEE results, they just resigned to fate. With such an attitude, whatever one does, one will not succeed. There is a saying that all roads lead to Rome. If a student has identified his goal, is determined to achieve the goal and has made appropriate preparation, he will surely be able to enrol in a course suitable to him, no matter how many points he has obtained in the HKCEE.
