18 Abstract In the theory of gift-exchange the concept of reciprocity has always been a dominant word which has deep influence on Fei Hsiao-t'ung's the Feedback Mode. Based on the fieldwork in Zhejiang Province this article explores the circulating mode of household property and reflects the efficiency and limitation of the concept of reciprocity. In the context of household and village the norm of reciprocity plays an important role in the forms of work transaction give-and-take and gambling etc. Meanwhile there are some inalienable properties that is to say they are like the heirlooms such as land house and tomb which can only be inherited and kept by generations. Therefore in the study of Chinese society Fei s concept of root gen should be considered juxtaposing complementarily with the Feedback Mode. Interests Alignment An analytical framework of the state and society relations in transitional China Jiang Hua Zhang Jianmin & Zhou Ying 136 Abstract Through critical evaluations of researches on the state and society relations in transitional China this article proposes an analytical framework centered on the concept of interest alignment from the rational choice perspective and tests it with comparative case studies of policy participation by industry associations. It argues that the degree of interests alignment between the state and society determines whether the state supports or restricts societal organizations and attributes this to the dominance of the state and its relatively high discretionary power in transitional China. The new analytical framework puts more emphasis on strategic choices by the state and low degrees of institutionalization of how the state handles its relations with the society. It reveals the nature of the interactions between the state and society better than theories originating from the West and it also expands and modifies native theories such as graduated control. Production and Reproduction of Political Power In the case of J neighborhood election in Shanghai in 2003 Geng Jing & Yao Hua 153 Abstract With the rapid changes in Chinese society the development of a variety of social power and its autonomy has led to the change of the mode of production and reproduction of political power. The reproduction of political power takes place not only in political organization but also extends to the reproduction of the social sphere. This paper based on the case of a neighborhood election in Shanghai in 2003 explores the power operation mechanism in practice its acting strategy to reconstruct power relations and its production and reproduction in social sphere. 245
