4 Il Premio Il Premio Shanghai, giunto alla sua terza edizione, nasce nel 2011 da un intesa istituzionale tra partner pubblici e privati. Si rivolge ad artisti italiani e cinesi di età compresa tra i 18 e i 35 anni, che operano nell ambito delle arti visive. Viene assegnato attraverso una selezione concorsuale con l obbiettivo di dare a giovani artisti opportunità reali di crescita artistica e professionale offrendo loro due mesi di residenza rispettivamente in Cina (Shanghai) e in Italia (Torino). Il progetto Le opere presenti in questo catalogo rappresentano i lavori finali dei tre giovani artisti italiani Daniele Marzorati, Fabio Roncato e Matteo Valerio, e dei tre giovani artisti cinesi Fan Zhiye, Li Zhaopeng e Lu Yuyi, vincitori della terza edizione del Premio Shanghai che hanno trascorso due mesi di residenza a Shanghai e a Torino, durante i quali si sono immersi nella vivace realtà culturale delle due città. Italia e Cina Il ruolo che l Italia e la Cina giocano nel panorama mondiale dell arte contemporanea è sempre più marcato col passare degli anni, con ricadute di grande rilievo internazionale sia sul piano culturale che su quello economico. Questo induce a guardare con sempre maggior attenzione allo sviluppo dei rapporti tra i due Paesi. Il Premio Shanghai è dunque un importante tassello di questa modalità di avvicinamento culturale. It is geared towards Italian and Chinese artists aged between 18 and 35 operating in the field of the visual arts. It is awarded through a competition with the objective of giving young artists real opportunities for artistic and professional growth by offering them a two-month residency in China (Shanghai) and Italy (Turin). The project The works featured in this catalogue represent the finished pieces by three young Italian artists Daniele Marzorati, Fabio Roncato and Matteo Valerio and by three young Chinese artists Fan Zhiye, Li Zhaopeng and Lu Yuyi who were the winners of the third edition of the Shanghai Prize and who enjoyed two-month-long residencies in Shanghai and Turin, respectively, during which time they immersed themselves in the vibrant cultural life of the two cities. Italy and China The role that Italy and China play on the global contemporary art scene is becoming increasingly important, making cultural and economic waves that are now felt internationally. As such, it is becoming essential to pay more attention to the development of the relationship between the two countries. The Shanghai Prize is, then, an important element in this mode of cultural engagement between the two countries. 7 Il lavoro di Daniele Marzorati si concentra sul rapporto di creolizzazione tra oggetti d esportazione coloniale europea e cultura cinese. Il progetto considera come alcuni oggetti che si ritrovano costantemente all interno della città per intervento francese - dai platani lungo i viali, agli edifici in stile Art Déco - abbiano un significato politico-organizzativo al di là della superficialità decorativa che ad essi viene attribuita. Il lavoro si costituisce di un wallpaper che ricalca la corteccia dei platani, una serie di pitture a olio che riprende i motivi Art Déco e un gruppo di fotografie. Attraverso questi elementi il progetto riflette sul concetto di spostamento, ossia sul cambiamento di significato che un oggetto - o un gruppo di essi - subisce in seguito al mutare del contesto in cui viene collocato, per quanto, in questo processo, esso non cambi di forma. In his project, seemingly decorative objects such as plane trees or Art Déco buildings - both notably common in urban Shanghai thanks to French intervention - are revealed to possess deeper political meaning. Marzorati s work consists of a wallpaper reproducing the bark of plane trees, a series of oil-paintings portraying Art Déco motives, and a series of photos. Through these elements, the project looks at the idea of displacement, understood as the shift in meaning undergone by object when their context shifts, even as the physical form of these objects is unaffected by change. 12 Come artista in residenza mi sono posto l obiettivo di realizzare delle opere che nascessero in modo spontaneo dal contatto con la realtà nella quale ero ospite, affidandomi alla capacità della memoria di riferirsi alla materialità dei luoghi, producendo giorno dopo giorno quella narrazione che è il paesaggio nella nostra identità culturale. Ho lavorato sia sul piano scultoreo che su quello fotografico, tutte le opere fanno parte di un processo di comprensione della realtà Cinese nella quale ho vissuto, e vanno intese come un progressivo avvicinamento ad un idea di insieme, senza nessuno scopo descrittivo o narrativo. L obiettivo è di documentare quella transizione dal processo percezionale a quello conoscitivo di chi si affaccia ad una realtà nuova e inesplorata. Un silenzioso e imprevedibile dialogo visivo che si sviluppa nel vissuto quotidiano in un ambiente sconosciuto. 作为一名驻留艺术家, 我的作品创作灵感来自与驻留机构所在地的现实社会的自然接触, 凭借自己的记忆力描绘出每个地方的物质性, 在日常中叙述属于我们的文化景观特征 我的创作领域还涉及雕塑和摄影, 所有作品代表了我对自己所居住过的中国社会现实的理解的一部分, 可以看作是一个整体想法的渐进形成过程, 没有丝毫的说明或叙述目的 它的目标在于忠实地记录当面对一个全新而陌生的现实时, 一个人由感知向认识过渡的过程 一段沉默和不可预测的视觉对话, 在一个陌生的日常生活环境中发展而来 As an artist-in-residence, I set myself the objective of making works that would arise spontaneously from contact with the reality in which I found myself, putting my trust in the capacity of memory to concern itself with the materiality of places, producing day after day that narrative which is the landscape of our cultural identity. I worked both with sculpture and with photography. All of the works formed part of the process of getting a handle on the reality of life in China while I was there, and should be interpreted as a gradual move towards the idea of an ensemble, with no descriptive or narrative purpose per se. The aim was to document that transition from perception to understanding on the part of those facing up to a new, unexplored reality; a silent and unpredictable visual dialogue that takes place in the day-to-day experiencing of an unknown environment. 15 Il lavoro di Matteo Valerio è incentrato sulla ricerca di realtà artigianali che possano divenire attuali seppur tradizionali nel rappresentare un approccio alla produzione che possa armonizzare lavoro, daily-life e natura. L uso dei materiali reinterpretati stampati con simbologie appartenenti alla cultura Miao per rafforzare il legame tra un materiale, il luogo e lo stile di vita di coloro che lo producono; collaborando con artigiani in quattro luoghi differenti. La realizzazione delle parti diventa un media per creare uno scambio con ambienti di lavoro e comunità cinesi; osservando le contrapposizioni fra tradizione e innovazione, produzione e sostenibilità, industria e inquinamento. The realisation of the elements of the work seen as a media to create an exchange with some Chinese communities. 20 Forme e linee specifiche hanno un carattere particolare, in alcuni casi le forme sono come due persone con personalità diverse che si incontrano. La vita frenetica fa sì che le persone si trasformino in simboli antropomorfi che non comunicano tra loro o che, se lo fanno, avviene in maniera vaga. Questa comunicazione non è narrativa e l informazione data non è chiara, ma è innegabile che costituisca comunque un linguaggio in grado di trasmettere informazioni. Statue in argilla raffiguranti figure astratte con espressioni diverse, dinamiche, snelle e vitali sono posizionate nello spazio, sole o a gruppi, ma ognuna in un punto preciso in relazione con le altre. 24 Mover è una performance che sembra non rappresentare nulla. È la rappresentazione di un movimento impercettibile. L artista cammina molto lentamente per una certa distanza, che se percorsa a passo normale si potrebbe tracciare in pochi secondi. L opera video riprende questo movimento rallentato che se guardato a lungo diventa indistinto, quasi statico. Un movimento che sembra statico è un esistenza senza significato. Quando un azione perde la sua motivazione, perde anche il suo scopo. Mover allude a un livello superiore dell esistenza: una libertà costruita sul nulla, al contempo è anche una resistenza silenziosa contro l esistenza del mondo terreno. It is the representation of an imperceptible movement. The artist walks very slowly across a certain distance, which at a normal pace could be covered in a matter of seconds. The video work captures this slow-motion movement, which when seen from a distance becomes fuzzy, almost static. A movement that seems static is a meaningless existence. When an action loses its motivation, it also loses its purpose. Mover alludes to a higher level of existence: a freedom built on nothing; at the same time, it is also a silent form of resistance against the existence of the earthly world. When we lose the passivity of existence and every act is not done for a reason, life can rediscover its true nature.

31 Daniele Marzorati Daniele Marzorati (Novedrate, 1988) lavora attraverso disegno, pittura e fotografia. Con una Deardorff 20x25 cm inizia la sua ricerca sulla divisione del formato e l accostamento di più scene all interno di un unico nega-tivo. Espone alla galleria Neon Campobase di Bologna nel 2012, poi collabora con Vincenzo Castella ed è tra i finalisti del Premio Terna 04. Nel 2015 vince il premio Agarttha Arte ed espone presso due musei: la MEP di Parigi ed il PAV di Torino. Ora continua il suo progetto di ricerca, tra pittura e fotografia, come linguaggi complementari, capaci di rileggere il reale. Fabio Roncato Fabio Roncato (Rimini, 1982), vive e lavora a Milano. Frequenta l Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera a Milano dove consegue la laurea in Pittura. Durante il suo percorso di formazione post universitario frequenta diverse residenze fra cui l Atelier Bevilacqua la Masa a Venezia, VIR - Via Farini in Residence a Milano e la Jan Van Eyck Academie a Maastricht. Il suo lavoro è stato presentato in diverse istituzioni in Europa e in Italia, attualmente la sua ricerca si concentra sul rapporto fra immaginazione e conoscenza, attraverso la realizzazione di opere che attraverso l estetica del caso ne indagano il loro potenziale evocatvo e intersoggettivo. Matteo Valerio Matteo Valerio (Tampa, 1989), è un artista formato presso la Central Saint Martins di Londra. Ha partecipato a diverse mostre collettive e premi. Tra il 2015 e il 2016 vince la Mona Hatoum Scholarship, La Collettiva giovani Artisti Fondazione Bevilacqua la Masa e la residenza Art For The Environment presso Fondazione Zegna curata da Lucy Orta. Dal 2015 sviluppa un progetto in collettivo con Sofia Bonato presso Progetto Borca-Dolomiti Contemporanee. Nel 2017 viene selezionato tra I finalisti del Nova Award Mullenlowe-Unilever. Fan Zhiye Fan Zhiye (Baicheng, provincia di Jilin, 1993) nel 2014 ha studiato arte pubblica presso la East China Normal University. Ha studiato con il famoso pittore Mr. Zhao Yanjie per molti anni. Attualmente, lavora come artista freelance. Influenzato da Miro e dalla pittura espressionista tedesca, ha iniziato gradualmente ad appassionarsi all espressione emotiva della forma e dello stato. Nel 2016 ha esposto le sue opere music box e graphics grid and space a Shanghai presso la galleria M50. Nel 2016, 1001th power of a poem è stata esposta presso il Shenzhen Harbor Mall. Li Zhaopeng Li Zhaopeng (Pechino, 1987) dal 2007 vive e lavora a Milano, dove si è laureato presso l Accademia delle Belle Arti di Brera. I suoi lavori comprendono installazioni, video-arte e performance. Le sue opere contengono riflessioni filosofiche basate sul pensiero sia orientale che occidentale, e si concentrano sul tempo presente e sull esistenza dell uomo. I suoi lavori sono stati selezionati per diversi premi, e sono stati esposti in diverse città italiane. Lu Yuyi Lu Yuyi (Hainan, 1995) è un giovane studente di arte pubblica che attualmente studia all Università Normale della Cina orientale di Shanghai. Utilizza video e modelli 3D per mostrare la sua visione della relazione tra il mondo interiore delle persone e la società.
