Brief History Named after Monte Jade, the highest mountain in Taiwan, the Monte Jade Science and Technology Association was founded by a group of high-tech Chinese-American executives in Silicon Valley, California in February The organization, subsequently known as Monte Jade West Coast, became a model for other regional chapters bearing the name Monte Jade, including Southeastern United States, formed in Atlanta, Georgia on January 16, Missions Monte Jade Science & Technology Association Southeastern U.S. (MJSTASE) is a nonprofit organization registered in the State of Georgia. The missions of MJSTASE are as follows. Promote technology development and entrepreneurship Promote investment in business and development of business Promote exchange of information on current industry trends and business information among members Promote technology transfer, technology exchange, and create opportunities for international cooperation Promote technology awareness, encourage innovation and learning, and help enhance the competitive edge of the Chinese community 3

As we are moving toward the end of 2017, my role as the Chair of Monte Jade Science & Technology Association Southeastern US (MJSTASE), otherwise known as Monte Jade Southeast, is also coming to an end. It has been a great honor to be the Chair of such a wonderful organization of devoted and dedicated Board members and volunteers. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for all their hard work this year. More importantly, on behalf of Monte Jade, I would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to our sponsors. Without you sponsors, we would not have been able to accomplish all that we did this year. Big Data has been the focus of our technology events this year. While the name Big Data suggests that it is merely a large collection of raw data, in actuality, it s about the Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence that process the data into information, which is then turned into intelligence. We believe that the Big Data technology will have a huge impact on human life. Those stories about robots replacing human jobs are no longer science fiction. They are actually occurring right in front of our eyes. As one of our missions, we had held events to bring up the awareness of these modern technology advancements so that people may be introduced to new business or career opportunities for themselves. Monte Jade Southeast has had two seminars and a half-day symposium dedicated to Big Data this year. We invited Big Data experts to educate us about how the Big Data technologies work in areas such as Financial Industry, Environmental and Earth Sciences, Marketing and Business Connectivity. In addition to Big Data, we also held seminars on other topics such as Aviation Safety, Health Talk, as well as community events such as the ewaste Recycling event and the College Planning seminar marks the 25th Anniversary for Monte Jade Southeast. Similar to how our wisdom grows as we become more mature, our capability to give back to our community grows as well. We are currently formulating a couple of new programs, including a mentorship program and an innovation scholarship program to help college students and young professionals with their pursuits. We will need a lot of help to implement these programs. If you are interested in giving back to the community through these programs, you are more than welcome to join us. MJSTA Scholarship Foundation of Southeastern US (MJSTASF-SE) is proud to renew its mission and commitment to awarding scholarships to outstanding Chinese-American high school students for the 24th consecutive year. This year we had a record applicants and gave out over $10,000 in scholarships to the award winners. Special thanks to all the sponsors, judges committee, honorary board members and individuals who embraced the same vision in supporting our youth and contributed to the Foundation that enables us to give out these scholarships. 10 The 25 th MJSTASE Annual Conference A Message from Paul Wang Chair of Monte Jade Global Dear Members and Friends, Congratulations to Monte Jade Southeastern US Chapter on her 25th anniversary and welcome all of you, friends and members from our global chapters to attend the conference held in Atlanta. Monte Jade was founded in 1990 by a group of Chinese American high-tech executives and entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley. The establishment of Monte Jade is to create an intellectual platform to foster more cooperation and collaboration among Chinese worldwide. During the past two decades, Global Monte Jade has expanded from the Bay Area to the East Coast, the Midwest, and other regions of the US and Canada. It also crossed the Pacific Ocean to Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan to strengthen the Asian connection and liaison. Last December, I was elected as the Chair to global Monte Jade. Following the objective of Monte Jade, I hope to expand our coverage by setting up more chapters and affiliations worldwide, especially in China. Fortunately, with the full support and push effort from Suzhou government leaders, local entrepreneurs and our Monte Jade members, Suzhou Yu-Shan was successfully set up in June, This is the 2nd MJ affiliations in China, in addition to Shen-Zhen, which was established in This is a milestone for Global Monte Jade and we hope there will be more chapters and affiliations established worldwide. Facing the new era, I have three words for all our MJ members. That is Innovation, Interaction and Integration. I will call them 3 I s. First of all, we need to stay innovative during this rapid revolution of technology, making us continuously competitive in this fast pace of change. Secondly, we need to interact more actively with various Monte Jade members and chapters to maximize our value and strength. Finally, we need to integrate with local communities where each member and chapter resides to promote and enhance the understanding and collaboration among different cultures and societies, making Monte Jade a truly global platform. Last but not least, I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to all the past Chairs, board members, staffs and volunteers for your selfless devotion. And I would also like to thank our members for being a part of our MJ family. With all your dedication and contributions, Monte Jade will continue to grow. Thank you again for your support. 11 美東南玉山科技協會 2017 年會 Annual Banquet Keynote Speaker Chun-Ya Chen VP of Operations and Technology for Integrated Device Technology (IDT) ILF s San Francisco Advisory Board Benefit Tomorrow Organization Chun-Ya (C.Y) Chen, has 30 years of experience in the semiconductor industry. He is VP of Operations and Technology for Integrated Device Technology (IDT) based in the San Jose, California. IDT was founded in 1980 and started with SRAM design and manufacturing for military applications, currently employees, $800M in revenue and offices in more than 20 countries around the world. IDT provides the product technology leadership In Timing, Memory Interface, RF, real-time electrical and Optical interconnect, wireless power and Sensor products. C.Y has been working in the Silicon Valley since 1983 and involved in many Merger and Acquisition activities as well as new product business startups. Chen holds multiple patents on semiconductor processing technologies, and received the Distinguished Engineers of Silicon Valley award from Chinese Institute of Engineers in San Francisco during its 100th anniversary in Chen was the Chairman of the 2015 Board and 2016 Board of Monte Jade West Science and Technology Association and the 2017 Vice Chairman of Global Monte Jade. He has also been in the Advisory Board of China International Semiconductor Executive Summit (CISES) since Chen has been the Co-Founder of the Benefit Tomorrow Foundation in San Jose since The Foundation is a Charity 501(c) organization that sponsors the activities to educate the young generation talents and help create a better society. Chen is also a Board member and Vice Chairman of the International Leadership Foundation branch of San Francisco (ILF SF), which provides opportunities to train next generation leadership. Chen is also the Vice Chairman of Mandarin Business Association in California. Chen graduated from National Taipei University of Technology, Chen received a BS degree in Chemical engineering from Texas A&I university, an MS degree in Gas Engineering from Illinois Institute Technology and an MS degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Santa Clara. Mistress of Ceremonies Amy Zhang ( ) Born in Tucson, AZ and raised in Atlanta, GA, Amy Zhang is an accomplished violinist and dancer. She has won numerous awards in both fields and was an active part in her community when she was in high school. She took up hosting her freshman year in high school, and since then, she has been the MC for Morningstar Dance Academy s annual gala for four years in a row including the academy s senior recital and various other events in the Greater Atlanta area. She even found her way to the stages in China and Hong Kong being the MC and official English interpreter for the World Youth and Children s Choir Association Choral Festival in 2017 and Choral Conducting Master Class in She is currently a freshman at Emory University pursuing a degree in music performance and on the pre-business track. In her free time, she enjoys practicing violin and spending time with her friends. 11

12 The 25 th MJSTASE Annual Conference 2017 MJSTASE Young Achiever Award Established in 1994, the Young Achiever Award from Monte Jade Science and Technology Association Southeastern USA (MJSTASE), is to recognize outstanding high school students from the 11th and 12th grades as exemplary youth for young Chinese American. Awards in this year are given to students who exhibit exceptional performance in the following categories: 1) Overall Excellence, 2) Civic and Public Services, 3) Excel 360, 4) Leadership, 5) Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), 6) Community Service, 7) Special Talents, 8) MJ Exceptional, and 9) MJ Young Achiever. 13 美東南玉山科技協會 2017 年會 The Po Chun and Chien Pin Tsang Scholarship was established in 2010 to commemorate the life of Mr. Po Chun Tsang. The scholarship was established by his grandson and former Monte Jade chairman, Kai Hsu, to continue the legacy of his grandfather s humanitarian efforts. Born in 1917, Mr. Tsang was a loving husband, father of five children and ten grandchildren, distinguished military officer, tireless civil servant and humble humanitarian. His life was marked by continued service to others, and always putting the needs of his colleagues, friends and family above his own. It is in this spirit that the Po Chun and Chien Pin Tsang Scholarship was created to promote these ideals in young Chinese-Americans MJSTASE YAA Selection Committee We are very pleased to present the selection committee for the 2017 MJSTASE Young Achiever Awards. These accomplished individuals had the task of determining the finalist and winners in each category. It is a daunting task. We are honored to have this strong committee this year. 14 The 25 th MJSTASE Annual Conference 2017 MJSTASE Young Achiever Award Winner of Po Chun and Chien Pin Tsang Outstanding Award: Phoebe Liu ( ) is a sixteen-year-old virtuoso violinist who has won numerous violin competitions, soloed with orchestras such as the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and has been the Concertmaster of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, the GMEA All-State Orchestra and the Curtis Summerfest Orchestra. As a math major, Phoebe attended the 2017 Georgia Governor s Program. A senior at The Westminster Schools where she was awarded the Askew Award for the most contribution to all phases of school life and the Worley Award for the highest leadership potential in all aspects of student life, she is the Math Team captain, Mu Alpha Theta officer, Discipline Council prefect, Westminster newspaper writer, and varsity state swim team member. Winner of Po Chun and Chien Pin Tsang Outstanding Award: Lucas Kuan ( ) is a senior at Walton High School. He is Georgia Junior Classical League s 1st VP and President of his local NHS chapter. He shoots senior portraits as a business and enjoys photography as a hobby on the side. He has played piano for 12 years and the trumpet for 6 years. Lucas loves hiking, watching movies, skiing, and reading. He prefers 0.5 lead over 0.7, Nikon over Canon, Marvel over DC, and Apple over Samsung. His favorite national park is Grand Tetons, and he hopes to visit the Swiss Alps someday. Winner of The Benefits Tomorrow Award: Daphne Manning ( ) is a senior at Northview High School. Daphne enjoys dancing, drawing, and folding origami. She is the President of Origami Club, Treasurer of Stock Market Club, and a national qualifier in FBLA. She has interned at VVV Academy, Hearth Education, and Shanghai Pudong Bank. She performed at the annual Chinese Spring Festival that was broadcasted on CCTV. She is involved in many community service activities, teaching ACT at Carver High School and origami at Ivy Hall Senior Living Center. She is interested in math, and hopes to major in either computer science or finance in college. Winner of Excel 360 Award: Jennifer Shen ( ) is a senior at Campbell High School. She is the president of the debate team and the Red Cross club and the vice president of Beta Club. She is also the captain of the Varsity tennis team and manages the Campbell IB website (campbellib.org). Jenny loves meeting new people and learning about all different cultures. In her free time, she volunteers to teach in both Spanish and math and to make lunches, plays piano, and runs with her dog. 14

15 美東南玉山科技協會 2017 年會 Winner of Leadership Award: Alex Pu ( ) is a senior at Johns Creek High School who enjoys drawing, playing the double bass and piano, and most of all serving his community! Alex is an active member of his community who works as an agent of change. He is the current president of the Chinese-American LEO Club of Atlanta and holds leadership positions in several other school and community organizations as well (i.e. President of Notes of Joy, Vice President of Chinese Club, Vice President of Tri-M Music Honor Society, etc.). Winner of Special Talent Award: Benjamin Chin ( ) is a senior at South Forsyth High School. He has been playing piano for 13 years and has won numerous awards including 3rd prize at the Nashville International Piano Competition and 1st prize at the MTNA Georgia Senior Solo Piano Competition. Benjamin is a member of AYWS, serving as both a saxophonist and the principal pianist for the group. He is also fascinated by mathematics and is the president of his school s Mu Alpha Theta chapter. With other interests including golf, seafood, and trash films, Benjamin constantly seeks for new hobbies and passions. Winner of Special Talent Award: Anna Zhao ( ) is a junior at Lambert High School. She dedicates a majority of her time to dance, performing with both her school s dance company as well as with the Atlanta Professional Dance Academy. She has performed at many national and international events with her team, Jasmine Flowers, and was the youngest member of the America s Got Talent Season 9 Quarter Finalist team. In addition to dance, she likes reading, traveling, and socializing. Anna is extremely bubbly and finds that her best memories stem from the least extravagant experiences. Winner of Special Talent Award: Pengyu Li ( ) is a senior at Greater Atlanta Christian School with huge enthusiasm of natural, math, art, and sports. The people he admires most is Steve Jobs who found the intersection of art and technology. His favorite art style is impressionism because of its innovative idea of light and mixing color. He is also a transcendentalist who believes the truth is hidden in nature that God had created. 15

16 The 25 th MJSTASE Annual Conference 2017 MJSTASE Young Achiever Award Winner of STEM Award: Victoria Chen ( ) is a junior at Johns Creek High School with strong interests in all aspects of STEM. She is an active and dedicated officer of her school s math team, Science Olympiad team, Girls in STEM club, and Beta Club. Victoria has also danced with Atlanta Professional Dance Academy for more than ten years, and has performed with the Jasmine Flowers dance group on Amazing Chinese ( ), as well as featured shows on CCTV ( ), Hunan TV and Anhui TV. Winner of Community Service Award: Hsin Huei Chen ( ) is a senior at River Ridge High School. She enjoys running cross country and playing the cello. She has been a girl scout for 7 years and recently earned her gold award. Her project, called Bach to the Classics, was a concert series where she recruited teens to play classical music at retirement and assisted living facilities. She also enjoys volunteering at libraries and the Children s Hospital of Atlanta, and aspires to become an engineer and start her own nonprofit. She often craves new adventures, whether in activities or locations. Winner of MJ Exceptional Young Achiever Award: Claudia Chu ( ) is a senior at North Springs Charter High School, ranked second in her class. She is the president of Future Business Leaders of America and an active member in Habitat for Humanity, National Honors Society, Math Honors Society, and Art Honors Society. In her limited free time, Claudia loves spending time with her loved ones, creating artwork, reading, and shopping. She leads community service projects, volunteers for Habitat for Humanity, and offers free tutoring. In the future, Claudia hopes to pursue a career that fuses mathematics and art to keep gears turning in both sides of her brain. Winner of MJ Exceptional Young Achiever Award: Helena Liao ( ) is a senior at Northview High School, who is fascinated by biotechnology and bioengineering. She also enjoys dancing with her team, Jasmine Flower, around the country and the world, as well as learning languages and exploring cultures, especially French and Chinese. In her free time, she reads articles and books while incessantly snacking. 16

17 美東南玉山科技協會 2017 年會 Winner of MJ Young Achiever Award: Elaine Wen ( ) is an Anti-Defamation League student representative, Girls In STEM club cofounder, and fencing team co-captain at North Springs High School. As the 2017 Georgia High School Fencing League Women s Epee Individual Champion, Elaine enjoys fencing epee in the high school league and competing in foil at national and regional tournaments. A bibliophile, bubble tea fanatic, and cat lover, she hopes to become trilingual (adding Spanish to her fluency in Mandarin and English) to communicate with and help others with her passion for languages, science, and technology. Winner of MJ Young Achiever Award: Brian Sui ( ) is a senior at Johns Creek High School. He is the captain of his high school s Science Olympiad team and co-founded Autrey Mill Middle School s Science Olympiad organization, where he coaches students every Monday. Outside of science, he writes and edits as the senior copy editor for his school s news magazine, The Chariot. He is also a lover of language as he often rotates between Chinese, English, and Spanish on a regular school day. In his free time, he likes jogging in the evening, writing poetry, dancing with friends, and watching Parks and Recreation. Winner of MJ Young Achiever Award: Alan Ko ( ) is a senior attending Alpharetta High School. His passion lies in soccer and violin, which he has played respectively for 14 years and 11 years. He plays on the Ambush Soccer Club and the Alpharetta High School varsity soccer team. He is also a member of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, and attended GHP in 2016 (viola major). In academics, he loves math, science, and technology. He plans to attend the Georgia Institute of Technology, majoring in engineering and computer science. His goal is to do everything he can to improve the world. Winner of MJ Young Achiever Award: Luke Zhuo ( ) is a junior at The Westminster Schools. He is the president of his school math club and a winner of many math competitions. Luke won 1st place in the MATHCOUNTS State Individual Round, qualified for the MATHCOUNTS National Finals, was an AMC and AIME winner, and qualified for USAJMO. He tutors students in math and science through Mu Alpha Theta and helps underprivileged students learn reading and math at Agape Community Center. He is also a 2-star recruit for tennis, and he qualified for USTA 16U state championship tournament. He plays for Westminster s varsity tennis team, which has won back-to-back GHSA State Championships. In his free time, he enjoys reading, swimming, playing tennis, going to the gym, and solving math problems. 17

18 The 25 th MJSTASE Annual Conference 2017 MJSTASE Young Achiever Award Winner of MJ Young Achiever Award: Aaron Guo ( ) is a senior at Chamblee Charter High School. He is the leader of Fernbank LINK s Robotics Outreach Division and enjoys inspiring others to become actively interested in STEM. In his free time, he enjoys running cross country, swimming, and playing the flute. Knowing four languages, he enjoys talking with polylingual speakers about linguistics and the differences and similarities between languages. He partakes in community service in and out of school and likes to travel around the world. Winner of MJ Young Achiever Award: Ethan Tsaur ( ) is a senior at Northview High School. He enjoys playing the trumpet and piano in his spare time, and is a member of the Atlanta Trumpet Ensemble as well as the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony. In his free time, he enjoys biking, reading, snowboarding, and playing with his dog. He also loves to travel. Winner of MJ Young Achiever Award: Debbie Ku ( ) grew up in Atlanta, Georgia and will graduate from Chamblee Charter High School as part of the class of At Chamblee, Debbie volunteers with the Red Cross, Interact Club, and National Honor Society. She also plays clarinet as a hobby in school and for DeKalb Youth Symphony, in which she is the principal chair. She enjoys working with computers, which inspired her to attend a Girls Who Code program and to intern with the MyIT department of Dell SecureWorks. After graduation, Debbie plans to major in computer science at a college or university. Winner of MJ Young Achiever Award: Hilary Hsieh ( ) is a senior at Brookwood High School. She is a member of her school s National Honor Society and Tri-M, and she is the vice president of German Club. In her free time, she enjoys reading, practicing flute, and gaming. She is skilled at the flute, passing the All-State audition three years in a row while volunteering to play for churches. A quirky, fun-loving person, Hilary enjoys making witty jokes and wordy puns when she is with friends. 18

20 The 25 th MJSTASE Annual Conference Symposium Speakers Dr. Yimin Yang Senior Director, Protiviti A dedicated financial risk professional, Dr. Yang possesses great skills and experience in both credit risk and market risk management areas. He built and led credit and market risk analytics for two top 10 US banks (PNC and SunTrust). His current role is the Senior Director at Protiviti Inc., the sixth largest risk management consulting firm in US (formerly Arthur Andersen). He was the first person to be appointed to this extraordinary position created by Protiviti for promoting technical experts to company leadership. His responsibility covers credit risk, market risk, anti-money laundering and capital management. Clients of Protiviti include over half of Fortune 500 and most of world s largest banks. Dr. Yang holds a Bachelor s degree from Peking University and a Math Ph.D. from University of Chicago. He also has a Master degree in Computer Information Networking from Carnegie Mellon University and a Master degree from Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was a lecturer at the University of Chicago and taught as a tenure-track Assistant Professor at University of Minnesota, Morris. While working for SunTrust, he held an adjunct professorship at the Finance Department of J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University. Mr. Bai Tian GIS Program Manager, Atlanta GA Bai Tian is an interdisciplinary expert of Geographic Information System (GIS), geology, environmental, and natural resource sciences, with 30 years of working and managing experience in these disciplines. In the past 18 years, he has been managing GIS departments which were involved in hundreds of environmental and geological projects, with thousands of project sites across the United States, its territories (Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, Saipan, Puerto Rico, and Virgin Islands), and other countries, such as Iraq, Libya, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Rwanda, Haiti, etc. He is one of the early pioneers who introduced GIS technology into geological and environmental fields. Since early 1990s, he has written many papers for numerous conferences and scientific journals. Bai is also the author of the book titled GIS Technology Applications in Environmental and Earth Sciences 20

21 美東南玉山科技協會 2017 年會 Symposium Speakers Mr. Phillip Wu Vice President of Marketing UPS Emerging Markets As Vice President of Marketing for Emerging Markets, Phillip Wu is responsible for assessing and growing market opportunities, with a heavy concentration in Asia. Born in Taiwan, Phillip speaks fluent Chinese and is deeply familiar with the Asia Pacific business environment and culture. Phillip has worked with UPS for more than 20 years, and he has watched the dynamics of the Asia Pacific market grow and evolve over the course of his career, while helping companies in the U.S. and Asia alike understand how to achieve success in this market. In his previous role, Phillip was the Vice President of Marketing for UPS Asia Pacific. While in China, Phillip initiated and headed UPS s strategic alliance with Alibaba, the world s largest small business e-commerce company. The alliance, which started in 2010, made UPS the preferred logistics provider for AliExpress, Alibaba s online wholesale market place. In China, Phillip also led the implementation of a youth innovation initiative called Innovation@Work. The program fostered creative thinking and innovative problem solving among China s youth. Phillip also played an integral role in UPS s brand campaign during the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Outside of UPS, Phillip served as the president of the Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA) Georgia Chapter from 2001 to Phillip is a graduate of Georgia State University in the U.S. and holds a Master s Degree in Business Administration. Mr. Bruce Chen CTO, Liaison Technologies Mr. Bruce Chen is the Chief Technology Officer of Liaison Technologies, a leader in integration and data management. Bruce oversees Liaison s technology strategy and direction. Under his leadership, Liaison has developed the most technically advanced integration and data management platform in the market today which now serves more than 7,400 customers globally. Mr. Chen also spearheaded the establishment of Healthcare Informatics services at Liaison in The healthcare vertical serves an ecosystem of more than 2,000 healthcare organizations ranging from physician practices, labs, hospitals, medical research centers, biotech and pharmaceutical companies. His current focus and passion is to use big data and blockchain technologies to build expanded business ecosystem and advanced data harmonization solutions to enable analytics and artificial intelligence. Prior to joining Liaison, Bruce was the Chief Application Architect at McKesson where he orchestrated a large-scale development initiative to transform EHR products from client-server models to browser-based architectures.
