R esearch on subu rban ization has been done lo ts in the w estern countries, w hereas its research is just begun in our country now. In o rder to exp lo re its benefits and avo id its ill side effects on urban developm ent, it is ur2 gent to work hard on the essence, m echanism and law of suburbanization, and to compare the difference betw een Ch ina and the w estern coun tries. T herefo re, the article m akes the research on Shenyang s suburbanization. It is compo sed of the fo llow ing parts: 1. D efining division con2 cep t on urban central area, inner suburb, and outer suburb. 2. T estifying the beginning of sub2 urbanization since 1980 s and its intensity by checking the data of the third and fo rth census. 3. D escribing 1990 s suburbanization by po sitivism study on two samp les. 4. A nalysing the subur2 banization m echanism, specially emphasizing the system of land paid use. 5. Giving suburban2 ization comparison betw een China and the w estern countries. 6. Suggesting som e po licies of ad2 justm ent and contro lm ent on suburbanization in view of existing situation.
