13 ABSTRACTS O F M AJO R ART ICL ES Ref lection s on Severa l Theoretica l Issues of L iterary H istory: Genera l In troduction to the Newly Com p iled H istory of Ch inese L itera ture by Y uan X ingp ei L iterary h isto ry is the h isto ry of literatu re as one of the ach ievem en ts of hum an cu ltu re. It belongs to the field of h isto ry. Since literary h isto ry is w ritten bo th by and fo r peop le in ou r tim e, it w ill inevitab ly bear characteristics of ou r tim e. W o rk s of literary h isto ry shou ld be based on literatu re itself, and literary creation shou ld be the sub ject of literary h isto ry. But literary h isto ry also has tw o w ings: one is literary theo ry, literary criticism and literary app reciation, w h ile the o ther is the m edia of literary tran sm ission. T he evo lu tion of Ch inese literatare has bo th ex ternal and in ternal facto rs, w ho se developm en t is unbalanced. T hese facto rs include: the refined and the popular, w h ich influence, tran sfo rm and mo tivate each o ther; the variou s styles w h ich infiltrate each o ther and m erge; the tendency to retu rn to the ancien t s and the tendency to innova te, w h ich rep lace each o ther and run in to conflict w ith each o ther; and the literary and the mo ral, w h ich separate and in tegrate. T he h isto ry of ch i2 nese literatu re can be divided in to 3 periods: the early ancien t, the m iddle ancien t and the late ancien ṫ A nd the 3 periods are fu rther divided in to 7 section ṡ Con tinue from Zhu Guangq ian by Y e L ang T h is paper gives a rein terp retation of Zhu Guangqian s (as w ell as Zong Baihua s) aes2 thetics in term s of the concep t of im agery. Zhu Gangqian and Zong Baihua s aesthetic th ink2 ing reflect s, on the one hand, the t ran sit ion of W estern aesthet ics from the cla ssic to the modern, and on the o ther, the h isto rical tendency in modern Ch ina to seek fo r a m erge of Ch inese and W estern aesthetics. Bo th sides are reflected in their emphasis on and study of im agery. Im agery is bo th a key concep t of classical Ch inese aesthetics, and a connecting po in t betw een classical Ch inese aesthetics and modern W estern aesthetics. Zhu Guangqian s aesthetic theo ry can be summ ed up as beau ty lies in im agery. Con tempo rary Ch inese aes2 thetics shou ld con tinue from Zhu Guangqian.
