Weaknesses -Pupils lack initiative and motivation in learning English. -Most pupils are not much exposed to English. -Pupils are afraid to express themselves in English in class. -Most pupils do not have interest in reading. -Pupils lack confidence in using English outside classrooms. -Teachers cannot spare time to give extra remedial work for the weaker pupils, especially those who come from China and not knowing any English at all. -Many parents find difficulties in supporting the pupils academic work. Objectives -To encourage pupils to talk and communicate in English with teachers and classmates, especially they must be able to use and respond to classroom language. -To encourage pupils to spare more time on reading English books. -To arouse pupils interest in learning English and hence promote their abilities of self-learning. -To encourage pupils to find out, interpret and use information. Implementation Plan Activity Approach will be implemented in Primary 1 -New teaching methods focus on an activity-based approach will be implemented in Primary 1. This is a new teaching approach in our school and we are aiming at establishing meaningful contexts, providing multiple tools and resources, support reflection and self-assessment and providing a firm and safe foundation for the learner: providing sufficient support to them. -40-
Evaluation: According to the observation of the teachers, pupils are found to be fully motivated to learn under this approach. Their academic result is found to be satisfactory. Besides of that, 15 pupils of primary one (from different classes of Primary one) are chosen to be assessed under the Pnet scheme assessment (ALPS) and they all say that they like to learn English and they enjoy the lessons very much. We will continue to have Activity Approach in Primary one and two in the next academic year. Thematic teaching in Primary 2 -Thematic teaching will be implemented in primary 2. This is a new teaching approach in our school too and we have decided the theme Friends for the learners. It will be a cross-curricular approach and we will work with other subjects. Evaluation: All primary two pupils took part in this cross-curricular activity and their performance is found to be satisfactory. They enjoyed the story Farmer and the beet and the non-fiction Friends together. They did the worksheets well and they enjoyed the lessons very much. Native-speaking English Teacher (NET) scheme will be implemented. - the NET will use tasks and projects to facilitate the integrative use of language. - Students are provided greater opportunities for learners to use English for purposeful communication both inside and outside the classroom. - Make use of learner-centred instruction to encourage learner independence. - Students will be motivated to speak, read and listen to English. - Teachers will make flexible use of textbooks ad other resource materials. 1. Report of the NET s achievement of the above targets. a) Deployment of the Net within the mainstream curriculum in 2003-04 b) Involvement of the NET in extra-curricular activities within the school, including the time to be devoted to this work i. The Net has organized an Interview Class for Primary 6 (using the long week, alternate Saturdays, extra-curricular activities period) ii. Help to plan the post exam activities such as an English Day. iii. Help to plan activities for the whole school. iv. Activities for celebrating Halloween (Oct 2003) Colouring Competition (P.1 P.2) Mask-making (P.1 P.6) Acrostic Poem Writing (P.4 P.6) Evaluation: Native-speaking English Teacher (NET) scheme is carried out in our school this year. Over 75 % of both parents and pupils agree that the NET scheme can enhance them / their children to learn English and they hope to have more lessons with the NET and the NET can talk to each individual pupil regularly so as to brush up their listening and speaking skill. -41-
Seed project for Primary 4 students We have joined the seed project scheme Effective Strategies to Enhance Primary Pupils Skills and Attitudes in Learning to Read and Reading to Learn. Objectives 1. Promote pupils interest and positive attitude in reading. 2. Help pupils develop reading skills essential to become competent readers. 3. Create a reading culture in school. 4. Action plan with schedule Sept 2003 Jan 2004 - Having shared reading lessons with pupils, especially more for P.4 pupils. - Ask the NET to teach shared reading and have it video taped. Those videos will be shown during recess time at the school entrance. During the preparation period, we have modified our plan and we also discussed with the EMB on this aspect. We chose the ebook My house to be the one which was taught through the method of shared reading. Pupils found it interesting and they made their own small book on the subject My Dream House. The small books are well designed and the illustrations are colourful. Winnie the witch is the one we have chosen as the supported reading for our pupils. Pupils are interested in this book very much and they say that they like the main character, Winnie the witch, very much. Next year we will still join the network scheme of the seed project Effective Strategies to Enhance Primary Pupils Skills and Attitudes in Learning to Read and Reading to Learn. We will still use these two books but we will modify the activities in order to make the project more perfect. Seed Project for Primary 5 pupils -We have joined the seed project scheme Developing and Using a Learning Outcomes framework to Enhance the Learning and Teaching of English at Primary level. Evaluation: The above is our fist draft of the proposal. During the preparation period, we have modified our plan and we also discussed with the EMB on this aspect. We have Miss Tong man Wai to be the second teacher and during the presentation period, she has come back to school to lead the other primary five English teachers to carry out this project. In order to have self evaluation and peer observation, those lessons are video taped. The pupils can learn more ideas on Healthy eating habit under this programme. Through observation, pupils are found to be more ready to learn and they enjoyed the lessons very much. Nonetheless, this plan need modification and we will still use this method to teach students of primary 5 next year on this topic. In addition to that, we have organized a game day for the primary 5 students and one of the checkpoints is based on this aspect. The pupils performance is satisfactory. -43-
More activities are used to improve pupils ability to listen and speak in English. Systematic Phonics are taught to P.1-P.4 pupils The Phonic Book (Read With Phonics) will be bought by students. Students can learn all the phonic knowledge including consonants, vowels, diagraphs, blends, etc in two years. The learning materials will include Song and Rhymes Books, CDs, workbooks, etc. Evaluation methods 1. Pupils take part in the Spelling Bee competition and can make use of what they have learnt in the competition. 2. Pupils can distinguish the sounds and finish the exercise in the textbooks. Evaluation: We have tested the pupils on this aspect by introducing the spelling bee competition. All the pupils take part in this activity. They have done well in the activity. According to the guideline of this activity, 3 pupils who get the highest score are chosen from each class to be awarded. As a result, 95 pupils are specially awarded as they are the most outstanding pupils. Making and sending Christmas cards for the old people living in the Home for the Aged and also for the ones working in hospitals As one of the main aims of our school for the next academic year is caring about others, we have planned to ask our pupils to make some Christmas cards for those who live in the Home for the Aged. Seeing that many old people do not so much people to visit them, we hope this act can give them some warmth in winter. Evaluation methods 1.Pupils prepare the Christmas cards. 2.Pupils are able to represent the school to deliver the cards to the old people. Evaluation: All pupils have taken part in making the Christmas cards and 41 outstanding cards are chosen to send to the medical practitioners in Hong Kong. As we all aware of SARS, we just send the cards to them only, instead of sending pupils to represent our school to those places. Post-exam activities There will be a game day held after the examinations. The pupils will be asked to take part in the activities according to their grades. The activities will include miming, answering questions and pronouncing some words from the word cards. Evaluation methods 1. Pupils are able to understand and do what they are asked to do in the quiz show. Evaluation: We have organized a quiz show for the P1 to P3 pupils. On that day pupils are asked to answer the questions as shown on the screen. Each class had to send their representatives to the front and answer the questions. Questions of various types are included, such as grammar and phonics. The pupils enjoyed the activity very much and the quiz show is successful. -44-
