Jesus, You are so wise. Rachel Whitehurst, a trendsetter of the contemporary said something like this, Stop maintaining relationship with toxic people because it is just not good for you and it is not worth any of your time. This reminds us of what Jesus taught us in Matthew 5:38 42, Do not resist a evil person. And, then, Jesus cited 4 analogies or examples, and these are describing the modes of operation of the evil person: (1) The evil person would not only slap you on the right cheek, but also the other as well; (2) The evil person would not only take your tunic, but also your coat, if you were sued in court; (3) The evil person would not only force you to go one mile, but for another mile as well; (4) If you are asked, do not turn away from those (the evil persons) who want to borrow. So, be wise, Jesus taught us that we should stay away from the evil people. Otherwise, we would experience the modes of operation of the evil people. And, the emphases are not on, (verse 39) if someone slaps us on the right cheek, offer the other. Or, (verse 40), if you are sued in court, and your tunic is taken from you, give the coat, too. The emphases are on staying away from toxic or evil people because their modes of operation are evil. Take (3) for further elaboration, in verse 41: If a soldier demands that you carry his gear for a mile, carry it two miles. It was a common law in the Roman Empire around the First Century, that a Roman soldier could order anyone they randomly picked to carry his gear for a mile. (As in the case when someone was ordered to carry the cross for Jesus on His way to Calvary.) Jesus taught us to be wise in this kind of situation, and taught us not to stop at the end of the first mile, but continued to carry the gear and walk for another mile. Because if one stopped in line with the Roman law - at the end of a mile, the soldier, with the prerogative of someone who has the power to exercise the law, might opt to bully and ordered the victim to walk for as many more miles as the soldier dictated, because it was the mode of operation of the evil person, and in this case the evil person is the Roman soldier. Jesus taught us that it is not wise to maintain any relationship with toxic or evil people. The star still shines. Come, bow down and worship Christ, our Lord. We are overjoyed for a new relationship with Christ. The backhand stroke - for the Jews in Jesus time - is a very insulting stroke. Under the Jewish law, to slap a person is considered as a great insult to the person, because by doing so, the person, who has been hit is being humiliated. (2) Jews wore a tunic inside, and a thicker coat on the outside. The thicker coat outside was much more valuable than the tunic inside.
