38 2016 1 KEY WORDS: Lijiaya site, Lijiaya Culture, Chronology, Shilou type, Origins and provenance ABSTRACT: Through analyzing the materials published in the full site-report on the excavation of the Lijiaya site, this paper divides the chronology of the site into three periods: the Early, Middle, and Late periods. Based on the discussion about the relative dates of the enclosing wall, residential areas, and burials, this paper reconstructs the formation process of the site. Combined with archaeological materials from the Xuejiaqu site in Suide County and the Gaohong site in Liulin County, the Lijiaya Culture can also be divided into three periods. Through a comparative study, it is suggested that the bronzes from the Lijiaya site belong to the Shilou type bronze assemblages. Based on analysis of the cultural elements from the early and late periods at the Lijiaya site, this article suggests that the origin of the Lijiaya Culture should be related to the Zhukaigou Culture and its decline might have been attributed to the rise of the West Zhou Culture.
