The Japanese government declared that it was a planned armed resistance against Japan and decided to expand its war of aggression against China. However after the war abundant historical data was gathered by the International Military Tribunal for the Far East in Tokyo to prove the historical fact that the July 7 Incident was the product of the Japanese Army s planning incitement and conspiracy. This had a certain impact on the Japanese understanding of the Incident. Although the conservative scholars in Japan have intended to deny the nature of the war of aggression by saying that the July 7 Incident was accidental and that Chinese soldiers from the 29th Corps fired the first shot they do not agree with the right-wingers who put forward such sheer fallacies as the so-called CPC plot the responsibility of KMT or of the Comintern or USSR. While progressive Japanese scholars do not share the same opinions with their Chinese counterparts they a- gree on important matters like the war nature and war responsibility. That is the premise to conduct Sino-Japanese academic exchanges and joint research so as to narrow the gap in the understanding of history.
