2 : selectiononhousingstratificationwhenresidentsfacechangesintheopportunity structuretriggered bythehousingreform.ananalysisofthedatafrom a questionnairesurveyofover1000householdsconductedinguangzhouin2010 usingthe Endogeneity Switching Regresion Modelfoundtheeffectofself- selectioninthehousingstratification mechanismsduringtheprocesof market- orientedreform:capablepeoplewithinthestatesystembefore1998tendednotto buyhousesandiftheydidtheirhousingclasstatus wasactualylowered; capablepeopleoutsidethestatesystem before1998andalcapablepeopleafter 1998tendedtobuyhousesandiftheydidn ttheirhousingclasstatusslipped. Thatistosay after1998thehousingclasstatusofthosewithhumanorpolitical capitalwouldriseonlyiftheydidpurchasehouses;ifnottheirhousingclas statuswouldnotimprovesignificantly.thusthestudyconcludedthatthepower and market mechanisms werethestructuralfactors whichinfluenced housing stratificationandthatpeople shumanandpoliticalcapitalswerenecesarybutnot sufficientconditionsforhousepurchasing.tosomeextentthejudgmentthat thehigheraperson shumancapitaland/orpoliticalcapitalisthehigherhis/her housingclasstatusis ignoredtheroleoftheperson sself-selection.ofcourse thedecision makingof whethertopurchaseahouseornot mightbeavery complexselectiveproces.inordertostudytheselectivefunctionintheprocesin- depthdynamicdataincludingthebuyer spurchasingbehaviorsandtheend resultsindifferentsocialcontextsareneeded.becauseoftheflawsinthereal estatemarketandsystemresidents freedomtomakepurchasingdecisionsisquite limited.theseconstraintsforthecurentstudywerebeyondtheauthor smeansto overcome.
