7 Auction Item Description This white porcelain flask with band-shaped ornaments has a funnelshaped upper part comprising a dish-shaped mouth and a stem-shaped neck; a downward-reducing curve body; and an extended ring-shaped support. Seven intaglio parallel lines looking like a twisted spiral are engraved horizontally on the funnel-shaped upper part. On each of the left and right sides of the inverted oval-shaped body there is a bridge-shaped patched band ornament linking two loops, on top and at the bottom of the band. On each of the left and right sides of the ring-shaped support, a hole is made in line with the loops. On the slightly broad shoulder twelve raised bosses are interspersed. An intaglio pattern of persimmon peduncles decorated with stamens is carved on the body, forming a tri-star pattern with three squares. According to History Chief Yong Ding of the Inner Mongolian Museum, the brown-glazed carved pattern plate-mouth flask of the Tang Dynasty found in the Helingeer Tuchengzi Ancient Tomb in Hohhot City has a Western style from its shape and patterns, suggesting the frequent cultural and economic exchanges between the Orient and the West along the Silk Road... On both sides of the shoulder and lower abdomen of the dish mouth flask, there is a pair of symmetrical loops. The pair on the shoulder is linked to the pair at the lower abdomen by means of a band-shaped ornament. By putting a band through the loops, people could carry the flask more easily, and this design fits a nomadic lifestyle... The dish-mouth flask can contain 1.5 catty of wine. Its artistic value, particularly in ceramic kilning and historical terms, is quite high. (Chang, H. W. 1.5 Catty of Wine with Tang Wine Flasks). This dish mouth flask is an implement mixed with a Central Asian style of silverware. Users could tie a band along the grid on the bridge-shaped band on each side of the oval body, convenient for hanging on a horse back or carrying on the human back. The stem-shaped neck can prevent liquid inside from spilling, even on a long cart trip. Therefore, the entire design is suitable for use by nomadic people. This is a product of the Xing Kiln characterized by a robust and delicate texture, pure white color, evenly and neatly shaped body, and elegant and tasteful appearance. Although there is no fancy ornamentation, the flask

8 attracts people of refined taste like the bright moon surrounded by twinkling stars. When light is shed on it, its reflection from the neck, the shoulder, and the support of the flask is as white as snow and as shiny as silver. In his Tea Bowl Poem, Rixiu Pi ( ) wrote, Xing Kiln and the people of Yue make great ceramics. They are as round as the moon which captures the soul and as light as a cloud that enchants the mind. According to the last verse, ceramics made by Xing Kiln is as round and white as the moon which captures the soul and is as light as a cloud that enchants the mind. 2
