3 Our methodology unites social development with environmental protection for just and lasting community change. About us Future Generations promotes community-led development in partnership with government as a proven, alternative path to improving people's lives and places. The core of Future Generations work is a system that communities and governments can use to shape their futures. This system can create large nature preserves (as in Tibet, China), rapid social change (as in India), extend health services (as in Peru), or help countries rebound from conflict (as in Afghanistan). The global reach of Future Generations extends to more than 7,000 communities in 22 countries. In ten years, we seek to partner with 100 nodes of change, a global network of partners practicing a community-based approach to social change driven by local priorities and resources. Future Generations China has been committed to environmental protection in China since our founder Dr. Daniel Taylor helped establish a protected area around Mt. Everest in Much of our work involving communities that border national nature preserves is endorsed by Chinese president, Hu Jintao." Projects initially focused on community-based conservation, community development, and protected area management in Tibet. Over the years the breadth of our programs has grown and in 2007 Future Generations China was officially registered as an NGO in Hong Kong. In 2010, the organization was officially registered Beijing.

5 Future Generations operates on the basis that fostering initiative within local communities and establishing local ownership of resources is crucial to the achievement of its objective: Enabling lasting livelihoods for rural China. Based on the idea that lasting change can be initiated from the grassroots when aided by direction from leaders, and informed guidance from experts, Future Generations has developed the Seed-Scale approach for the application of its projects. The Seed-Scale methodology is founded on the following principles: Future Generations China s programs have now expanded beyond conservation in Tibet and now include environmental education through the Green Long March, sustainable development projects in rural China through the Model Eco-Community Project and Nature Forum of China. 1. Build from Success: Strengthen what is working. 2. Create Three-way Par tnerships: Between community, government, and outside change agents. 3. Make decisions based on evidence, not opinions. 4. 6 PROGRAM FACTS Canada We support the minority peoples of Canada and concentrate on community capacity building. CHINA Trains community leaders in health care, sustainable livelihoods and conservation methodology in the Tibet Autonomous Region, and nationwide through the Green Long March, a national environmental youth action movement., America We engage with 60 volunteer fire and rescue squads to set up public computer and learning centers. Each squad has added 20 computers to become a computer cyber-cafe helping to better interface with the communities they serve.

7 PERU Strengthens a national system of 2,100 community health-care facilities, which have reduced chronic child malnutrition from 46% to 18% in pilot sites. AFGHANISTAN Supports 300+ village councils that have established literacy and health classes for 21,000 women and girls. Farmer s clubs and 220 soccer teams are creating the conditions of hope.

9 Conservation Tibet Conservation Tibet encompasses three programs: the Qomolangma National Nature Preserve, the Four Great Rivers, and the Pendeba Program. All programs focus on community-based conservation in protected areas and providing skills to local leaders in sustainable income generation, environmental protection, and primary healthcare and education. Qomolangma National Nature Preserve Program Locations by Prefecture: Shigatse: Qomolangma National Nature Preserve Nyingchi: Nyingchi County, Bomi County, Gongbujiangda County Chamdu: Leiwuqi County, Basu County, Mangkang County, Zuogong County Nagqu: Changtang Nature Preserve Located on the Roof of the World, the Qomolangma National Nature Preserve (QNNP), extends over a 34,000 square kilometre stretch of the Himalayas. Founded in 1989, the QNNP was one of the first nature preserves in the world to be administered and protected entirely by local volunteers. Through their continued efforts, significant achievements have been made in halting rampant deforestation, unregulated tourism and illegal hunting of rare wildlife in the Qomolangma region. Active reforestation and garbage collection programs have also been undertaken to restore the environment. Four Great Rivers Future Generations China, in partnership with the Tibet Department of Science and Technology and the David Suzuki Foundation, are working together to protect 46 million acres of Eastern Tibet.

11 The Four Great Rivers area, which spans across Chamdo and Linzhi prefectures, encompasses the headwaters of the Brahmaputra, Salween, and Mekong rivers and has downstream ramifications for over 1 billion people in eight countries. With ecosystems that range from tropical habitats to artic-like mountain summits, it not only acts as a sanctuary to some of the most extensive biodiversity on the planet, but is also home to 800,000 people. Future Generations China engages local communities in the conservation of these ecosystems upon which so many depend. Pendeba Since 1994, Future Generations has been training Tibetan villagers to become Pendebas, or community leaders in natural resource management, primary healthcare, and income generation. Pendebas empower their communities to develop sustainable livelihoods and innovative solutions for health and education. Working in cooperation with the local government, villagers now have greater roles in the management of local protected areas and community development. Achievements QNNP Basic medical care is available in most of the 318 villages; Schools have opened in major villages; Child mortality rates have decreased by half; Killing of all wildlife in t h e p re s e r ve h a s b e e n b a n n e d ; Deforestation rates have been reduced by 80%; Rongbuk Base Camp now has ongoing garbage removal services; 500,000 trees have been planted. FOUR GREAT RIVERS Received government approval for the Four Great Rivers Ecological Environment Protection Plan. This plan sets the groundwork for establishing 46 million acres of ecologically and culturally significant land as a nature preserve. PENDEBA In 1998 the United Nations deemed the Pendeba Program one of the 50 Most Effective Development Programs for Poor People in the World.

13 Model Eco-Community Inspired by the success of the Future Generations China Pendeba Program in Tibet and the community-level conservation projects discovered on the 2007 Green Long March, Future Generations China and The College of Humanities and Development at China Agricultural University developed a three-year pilot project to build 105 model communities across China. This program has received enthusiastic and generous support from Mr. Adrian H.C. Fu. Program activities: -Practical training for community leaders in project development and management. -Local training program for village residents focused on project implementation. -Environmental awareness education to ensure improvement in environmental best-practices in all aspects of daily life and work. -Basic funding and equipment to compensate for possible deficiencies in local resources, such as funding for construction and maintenance of garbage storage containers, public toilets, and environmentally-friendly and energy efficient heating systems. In 2008, Future Generations China and partnering organizations selected 35 communities from four provinces: Liaoning Province, Ningxia Autonomous Region, Xinjiang Autonomous Region, and Guizhou Province.

15 The Green Long March is an award winning youth environmental action movement in China. Launched by Future Generations China and Beijing Forestry University in 2007, the Green Long March (GLM) is a youth movement that aims to build a more sustainable future for China. Across the country along the Grand Canal Route, Yangtze River Route, Yellow River Route, Northeastern Forests Route, Snowlands and High Plateaus Route, Gold Coast Route, Grasslands Route, Rainforest Exploration Route, Northwestern Deserts Route and National Treasures Route students carry out environmental awareness campaigns, local training activities, and promote eco-friendly capacity building on a national level through the Green Seed Awards program. The Green Long March aims to promote the sustainable development of Chinese society through its broad network of universities and students. The March gives students a voice and a platform to demonstrate their environmental philosophy through the media in partnership with c o r p o r a t e s p o n s o r s, g ove r n m e n t, a n d environmental experts. National and Regional Training National and regional training will increase student knowledge of key climate change issues and strengthen leadership skills. A team of students will be trained in Beijing and conduct regional training sessions across the country. These sessions will provide student volunteers with the skill needed to conduct quality projects in their regions. Green Seed Awards In 2009, the Green Seed Awards program was initiated as a supplement to the Green Long March to give young leaders the resources to initiate environmental programs of their own design in their own communities. The project seeks viable solutions for sustainable development using Seed-Scale methodology. The planning and implementation of these projects provides students with valuable leadership training and problem solving experience. Green Seed Awards will cover the following: Educational Awareness Green EntrepreneurResearch Environmental Best Practice Promotion Cultural Innovation Green Long March Summer Activities Every summer university student volunteers from more than 30 provinces across China organize and participate in a series of green awareness events. Activities take place on university campuses, public squares and in surrounding communities. The Green Long March

19 The Green Long March The Green Long March over the past four years has been active in 32 provinces, with more than 10,000 university student volunteers and over 80 partner universities. They have addressed a wide spectrum of environmental problem including water pollution, wetland destruction, forest protection, climate change, grassland degradation, white pollution and more. They have promoted green agriculture, clean energy transitions, marine ecosystem preservation, water quality monitoring, wetlands research, snow disaster relief efforts, earthquake victims psychological assistance programs, ecological education programs, primary and secondary supplementary education, Green Trains, green consulting, and many other projects for the benefit of communities around China. The GLM is a platform for student environmental groups from more than 80 chinese universities to have a voice, be heard, and affect change at the community level. Working in partnership with government, universities, communities, media, students and corporations, the GLM is an enduring vehicle for environmental change in China. Since 2007, the GLM has achieved the following: Received Best International Documentary Award at the 2008 Queens International Film Festival for, The Road Ahead. Organized a nationwide university network, which has expanded from 2,000 students in 2007 to 10,000 students in 2010 participating in GLM programs. Gained Support from the Chinese government and key environmental leaders through approval by the Communist Youth League and the State Forestry Administration. Executed nationwide special events including Earth Day, World Environment Day and events in Beijing during the 2008 Olympic Games. Raised environmental awareness across China by inspiring broad youth participation and by close collaboration with regional, national and international media. Led community environmental action through GLM case studies. The forthcoming GLM Green Seed Award will provide youth with small grants to support communitybased green initiatives.
