2 3G Introduction 3G and all it is meant to be are defined d in the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) specification International Mobile Telecommunications 2000 (IMT- 2000). IMT-2000 is a radio and network access specification defining several methods or technology platforms that meet the overall goals of the specification.

3 3G Introduction The IMT-2000 specification is meant to be a unifying specification, enabling mobile and some fixed high-speed data services to use one or several radio channels with fixed network platforms for delivering the services envisioned: Global standard Compatibility of service within IMT-2000 and other fixed networks

7 3G is a mobile radio and metwork access scheme that enables high-speed data to be used, allowing for true multimedia capabilities in a mobile wireless system. Today s wireless cellular and Personal Communications i Services (PCS) systems have the same radio bandwidth allocated for both voice and data.

8 Some of the 2.5G transition or migration plans call for the use of a dedicated spectrum just for data applications.

11 Two groups: Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) 3GPP works on UMTS which is based on WCDMA Third Generation Partnership Project2 (3GPP2) 3GPP2 works on CDMA2000

12 UMTS Because of the widespread d deployment and success of Global System for Mobile (GSM) communications, it is appropriate to base the UMTS core network on an evolution of the GSM core network In fact, the initial release ease of UMTS (3GPP release 1999) makes use of the same core network architecture as defined for GSM and GPRS.

13 UMTS specifications define four service classes: Conversational Interactive Streaming Background The services within a given class have a common set of characteristics.

14 Conversational: Low delay tolerance Low jitter Low error tolerance The data rate requirement generally is symmetric. ti (between two end dd devices) EX: video conference.

15 Interactive: ti This consists typically of request/response- type transactions. Low error tolerance Large delay tolerance Jitter is not a major concern. Data rate is generally significant only in one direction at a time. EX: web browsing.

19 3GPP Release 1999 All the interfaces in the UTRAN are based on Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). ATM was chosen because of its ability to support a range of different service types. Variable bit rate for packet-switched services Constant bit rate for circuit-switched services

23 3GPP Release 4 Network The main difference between the Release 1999 architecture and the Release 4 architecture is that the core network becomes a distributed network. Rather than having traditional circuit-switched MSCs, a distributed switch architecture is introduced, which is also referred to as IP Multimedia Services (IMS).

24 3GPP Release 4 Network In Release 4, High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) is introduced. HSDPA enables a more robust data offering in the downlink. The uplink remains the same as in Release 1999.

25 The Mobile Switching Center (MSC) is divided into: MSC server Contains all the mobility management and call- control logic. Media gateway Contains the switching matrix.

27 3GPP Release 5 Network The next step in the UMTS evolution is introduction of an all-ip multimedia network architecture. Specifically, both voice and data are handled largely in the same manner all the way from the user terminal to the ultimate destination. This architecture can be considered the ultimate convergence of voice and data.

28 In Release 5, not only is the core enhanced, but the uplink data rate also is improved through the introduction of High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA).

31 CDMA2000 CDMA2000 is a wireless platform that t is part of the IMT-2000 specification and is an extension of the CDMAOne wireless platforms using the IS-95A/B and J-STD- 008 standards. CDMA2000 is geared ed toward the transport and treatment of 3G wireless services supporting multimedia applications for fixed as well as mobile situations.

32 CDMA2000 CDMA2000 can be and has been deployed in an existing IS-95 channel or system and will exhibit the numerous enhancements: 1.25 MHz channel support 144 kbps packet-data rates 2 increase in voice capacity 2 increase in standby time Improved handoff
