I have been involved in APBI since 1998 at the Osaka International Cancer Institute. Following the small, but promising results at a single institution, we performed a multi-institutional prospective feasibility study for APBI during the years of 2005 through 2016 in Japan. By this study, we confirmed the feasibility and reproducibility of APBI using multi-catheter approach in a multi-institutional setting. The clinical results were within the previous American and European APBI series, except for the fair cosmetic results (Ex+Gd=74%@5 y). We found the unsatisfactory cosmesis was attributable to the traditional surgery of cylindrical tissue removal from beneath the skin all down to the chest wall. We are now planning a new phase II APBI study with modification of surgery to provide a satisfactory cosmesis to Japanese breast cancer patients. Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation (APBI) program 2005-2016. Secretariat for APBI research group funded by a grant from Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (2009-2012), following by a grant from Japanese Ministry of health, welfare, and labour (2005-2009). The study entitled A feasibility study of accelerated partial breast irradiation using interstitial brachytherapy for female breast cancer <= 3cm pn0m0. was registered as UMIN000001677. Four APBI papers: 2 as a first author, 2 as a second author, have been published in international journals. Brachytherapy Nine first author papers on brachytherapy for breast (2), head & neck (2), pelvic (1), and physics (4) have been published in international journals. 18

Louis WC Chow is Executive Director of the Organization for Oncology and Translational Research in Hong Kong; a distinguished professor of Macau Science Technology; Medical Director of the Comprehensive Centre for Breast Diseases at the.unimed Medical Institute in Hong Kong, an honorary professor of the Third Military Medical University; an honorary professor at Ningxia Medical College School of Clinical Medicine in Ningxia, China; an honorary professor at Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan; visiting professor at Wuhan University of Science and Technology; and an honorary consultant of Kiang Wu Hospital in Macau. Professor Chow was the immediate past honorary clinical professor of the clinical trials centre at The University of Hong Kong, past president of the Asian Breast Cancer Society, and former honorary secretary of The Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. Professor Chow received his medical education at The University of Hong Kong and completed his residency at the Queen Mary and Kwong Wah Hospitals in Hong Kong. He then underwent sabbatical training at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, and the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. After training in surgical oncology, Professor Chow returned to The University of Hong Kong and held competitive positions of assistant and associate professors in the department of surgery of the university. During his professorship, he gave lectures to medical and nursing students and staff on breast cancer surgical and medical treatments, and directed the radio-guided surgery courses for breast cancer and a minimally invasive breast biopsy course at the university. Apart from his clinical and teaching duties, he also served as Associate Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Deputy Director of the Centre of Education and Training in the department of surgery, and examiner for postgraduate examinations, as well as supervisor of doctorate and master degree students. As Associate Dean, Professor Chow played a pivotal role in the adoption of the problem-based learning (PBL) curriculum into the School of Medicine, which encourages analytical and critical thinking for complex subjects. This instrumental step was forefront for the development of PBL throughout all faculties of the University. Professor Chow is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, a Fellow of the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong, and a Fellow of the American Cancer Society. He is also an expert in cancer research and has obtained a patent on a mouse cell line derived from human malignant cystosarcoma phylloides. In the past few years, he has obtained various research and professional grants for cancer research purposes in the university and contributed as Principal Investigator/Co-investigator of several international clinical trials. Professor Chow has published more than 190 articles in peer-reviewed journals. His key research interests 35
are breast cancer molecular therapy, chemoresistance, chemoprevention and translational research in breast cancer. At the 6th National Breast Cancer Forum held in Chongqing of December 2012, Professor Chow was awarded the prestigious research prize of Kim Hyun-Jib Breast Cancer Research Memorial Award. Professor Chow is the only recipient in Hong Kong and Macau to have been bestowed with this honor. 36
