2018 Midwest College Chinese Speech Contest Hosted by Lake Forest College: Department of Modern Languages and Literatures and Asian Studies Program Location: 555 North Sheridan Road Lake Forest, Illinois 60045 Co-Sponsors: Consulate General of the People s Republic of China In order to promote Chinese language and culture, the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, Lake Forest College, has offered to host the 2018 Midwest College Student Chinese Speech Contest from 1:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, 2018. Eligibility for Speech Contest: All graduate or undergraduate Chinese language students studying in colleges or universities in the Midwest are eligible to participate. However, heritage native speakers of Chinese who came to the U.S. after the age of 13 years are not eligible. Each university may recommend no more than 6 students. 2018 Midwest College Chinese Speech Contest Registration: Please use the registration form to inform us if you are planning to compete. The registration form should be scanned and sent to Professor Licheng Gu by email at L-gu3@northwestern.edu before March 15, 2018. Food, Transportation, and Accomodations: With support from the Education Office of Consulate General of the People s Republic of China, and Phoenix Publishing Company, the Organizing Committee will provide all participants with lunch, dinner, and medals or awards. As the budget allows, we will also provide support to cover some of the costs of lodging and transportation to some participants. All others may request support from your home institution or local Confucius Institutes. Competition: Contestants will be divided into 6 groups according to their level (year) of Chinese study and their native proficiency. For example, for the non-heritage students (whose native tongue spoken at home is not Chinese), will be placed into Group 1 if she/he is studying Elementary Chinese. For the heritage students (whose native tongue is either Mandarin Chinese or any other dialect of Chinese), first year elementary and second year intermediate Chinese class students will be placed into Group 5. Third year intermediate high and fourth year advanced class students will be placed into Group 6. Each contestant will present a 3-5 minute prepared speech (50 points) to the judges and audience. When all contestants have completed their speech presentations, each contestant will present a Chinese cultural talent (10 points) such as a Chinese song, dance, painting, calligraphy, paper cut, puppet show, martial arts, or musical instrument. The contestant is responsible for bringing their own musical instruments, but the classrooms all have audio equipment. The Judging Committee will be composed of high school Chinese language teachers and local artists.
