A Study of the Title Deeds f or Houses in the Manchu Scripts of the Eight Banners People in Beijing in the Early Period of the Qing Dynasty Liu Xiaomeng(84) Abstract Based on publishing ten pieces of title deeds for houses in the Manchu scripts, this article makes preliminary researches on t he forms, content and characteristics of t he house - and - land trades of the eight banners people in Beijing in the early period of the Qing Dynasty, and points out that as late as the early period of Emperor Gaozong s reign (the Qianlong years), there were already different forms of t ransferring t he possession of real estates of pawning, mortgaging, selling wit h conditions, selling wit hout conditions, etc. wit hin t he eight banners. Along wit h t he implement of abolishing hereditarychieftaincy and bring the ethnic minority areas under unified provincial administration, the Qing government began to develop t he Tujia et hnic areas in a large scale, such development concerning many respect s of economy, society and culture powerfully put forward the economic and cultural progress of the Tujia ethnic minority areas, promoted the advance of the Tujia ethnic group s and the consolidation and development of unitary and multiet hnic China. Meanwhile, t he lopsided and undue reclamation and cultivation of lands broke t he t raditional pluralistic economy in areas inhabited by t he Tujia et hnic group, and aggravated soil erosion to a certain degree, t he soil fertility decreased, resources of animals and plant s reduced, while flood and drought increased. Some unreasonable changes imposed by t he Qing government upon t he Tujia et hnic cult ure also affected development of the Tujia ethnic culture.
