Welcome Presentation by Shelley Smithsdale: Artist in Residence Program This is a first Artist in Residence Program for TIS, featuring Peta Houghton, a wellrespected Australian artist and TIS parent who has won many awards and shows in a gallery in Australia. TIS is blessed to have her here for this program. There are 9 classes featuring different artist/artistic styles. This program is for students in grades 46. This art work will be installed on permanent display in the stairwell. On April 25th, TIS will be holding a Vernissage to unveil and celebrate this art from 35pm. Ms Smithdale has requested that TISPA will volunteer to help with providing snacks. Head of Schools Report (Howard Stribbell) See attached Mr Stribbell reiterated that TIS has been putting a greater emphasis on art at TIS. Banners will also be going out by the Phase 2 construction. TIS encourages all kids to be a part of this art initiative. Admissions process is in full swing and there continues to be an increase interest in attending TIS. To date TIS has received over 500 applications. It was asked if DSEJ has any involvement as to who is accepted and Mr Stribbell confirmed that they are not involved. They have simply changed some registration procedures to eliminate the long queues at schools and the racing against other schools, etc. Due to the high numbers of sibling applications, TIS has had to decline 100 applicants and put 150 on a wait list. There are certain factors that come into play such as communication, transitioning into the room, independence in activities, interaction with peers and teachers, etc. Ms Jasinski mentioned that she offered several halfday places for the PreK students. It was asked if acceptance of a place would need to be confirmed or communicated with DSEJ as well, or just at TIS, including the deposit. Ms Jasinski will follow up and confirm what that exact procedure is. Last year was the first year (Dragonbaby year) where schools were unable to offer places to children due to space limitations. This has continued this year, possibly because of more expat families staying in Macau and having more children here. The number of local applications is
much higher at TIS as well, compared to a few years ago. There is a cap of 6 schools that families can apply to in Macau. Pink Day is tomorrow, Wednesday, April 13. This initiative originally started out in Canada and is in support of antibullying. Children are encouraged to wear pink tomorrow to participate. School Bussing TIS is reminding the bus company not to arrive prior to 8am as supervision at school begins at 8am. There were a few emails and concerns regarding a rainy day where the bus arrived early at TIS and noone was available to help the 34 year olds in the rain. Mr Stribbell reiterated that TIS is not able to provide umbrella service to students during rainstorms, however, will ensure that the bus company will adhere to the time schedule. Principal s Reports Elementary (MaryAnn Jasinski) Admissions for PreK: All Kindergarten staff members participated in group interviews for children (groups of 5) with set activities in place. Each group had a teacher and a TA who were observing and taking notes. These sessions were extremely informative and served the very shy children much better than the traditional setting of a oneonone interview. This process seems to be much more childfriendly and will be used in the future. Instead of official questions for parents during the interview, this year parents were given access to an online form to submit and as a result, much more and better information was received. Spaces are available in JK and up, however G1 is very tight at the moment. G 16 are all involved in the field trip for the Healthy Life Program through Social Welfare. Several special events are coming up such as the Div 1 Police Band Concert on April 14 and the Disco on the 15th. Kindergarten will participate in the afternoon and Division 1 is from 56:30; Division 2 from 78:30. Kat Scott mentioned that she still needs a few volunteers to help with the set up of the disco in the afternoon. Those children who are part of the Seussical Musical will likely arrive a bit late to the Disco, as rehearsal is mandatory for certain cast members. After school club session 3 start on Monday. Certain G5&6 classes are still going to Zhuhai for the pottery school experience. Poetry Night is coming up as well. Way to go lunches will be at TIS, catered by Hard Rock Cafe as the numbers are too big for Season s Cafe. Friday April 29th is dressdown day with Crazy Theme. A special Pink Day Assembly will be held tomorrow, April 13 for Division 1. Secondary Mr Spreadbury Report cards are coming up as well as the studentled conferences on April 27/28 in the evenings. Several students are rewriting their diploma exam in maths, as the initial results weren t as positive as expected. It s penalty free for them to retake the exam, as they can choose the higher mark for their final submission. Experience Week was extremely successful! Students and teachers came back very excited and motivated and all had a fantastic experience. There were a total of 8 International trips with 280 students and 27 staff members and 2 local camps (dance and sport) with 30 students and 7 staff members. Participation was 66% for International trips and 75% for overall participation. Overall that is down a bit and slightly disappointing. The team is now looking 2
into ways to increase those participation numbers and talked about using International SOS earlier in the future. On these trips there were only a couple of minor incidences which involved a few stitches and an Xray but otherwise everything went really well and was very positive. The Europe trip came in under budget so those students will be getting a refund. TIS never makes money on these trips but the goal is to break even. Two student teachers are leaving on April 22. They have had a wonderful experience, along with the teachers and mentor teachers. Pink Day for Secondary will involve a Sportsmanship Day and activities. Treasurer s Report (Andrea Dryburgh) Popcorn Day in January: $3000 Popcorn Day in February: $2950 Popcorn Day in March: 2315 Community Day: $13,910 (despite the weather!) Easter Raffle: $6350 TISPA purchased a new BBQ for $9220 With the remaining $3000, TISPA is looking into purchasing a new commercial grade popcorn machine. Secondary raised funds from a dress down day for a generous donation to Caritas. TISPA also received a donation from Middle School ($1500), which will go towards the popcorn machine. Kat Scott, with the help of Judith s husband, has found a company in Macau to purchase a commercial grade machine. At our last Community Day we introduced a few healthy alternatives at the BBQ on a trial basis. 30 out of 50 Veggie Patties were sold, however they were quite spicy and consumed mostly by adults. Some of the apples and bananas were sold. The hot dogs sold out in less than an hour and almost all of the burgers sold as well. This initiative will be ongoing and TISPA will continue to come up with new ideas and trials to provide healthier food options at the events.
