35 Growing up in a multicultural city like Toronto I am no stranger to cultural diversity and ethnic culinary delights running the gamut of gyros from Greek Town to jerk chicken from Little Jamaica. I suppose my excitement for food and culture is what led to my present situation as an English B teacher in the IB department of Shanghai Pinghe School. For many, food is a substance that is mindlessly inhaled with only a concern for warding off pains of I have always been eager to experience new things, so as I stood on Beijing s tourist Wangfujing Street, through the many stalls of hawkers shouting, chuànr and bing píjiu and was stopped in my tracks in front of a small stall selling snacks that many people would consider inedible insects. As curiosity got the better of my husband and I, we began daring each other to give it a try. Sure enough he had more guts than I and ordered in the audience of people who had come to surround us. I was next, I contemplated what my parents would be thinking right now or if I would tell my children of this moment and closed my eyes and pointed. When pressure of the mob that now enveloped me; I smiled into the camera my husband was holding and took a bite! Since Sthat day I have been converted - some people snack on French fries, I prefer a lightly, chili-ssprinkled skewer of scorpions. Made In PH
the volcano strewn island of Sulawasi in Indonesia my husband, a backpacker we had befriended earlier that day named Clive Alive (don t ask), and myself indulged in a home-cooked meal of bat, moon rat, and python. Slathered in curry and with a side of rice, we sat down to the self-proclaimed most controversial meal of our lives. Although not the tastiest thing I have even eaten - actually it was not very good at all - we watched as our cook prepared the meal using age old techniques and understood that in this region of the country, Minahasan culture allows no food to go to waste! My food adventures have not only been limited to the dishes I have eaten, but often start when I plan a trip. Positioned in front of my laptop with my Google page ready I type in the words bizarre restaurant or restaurants say a lot about the exciting subcultures of a place. They give a traveler an understanding of what may be taboo or a way to unwind in a culture. Restaurants like ER Alcatraz the mental institution/horror themed restaurant in Tokyo where doctors lock you in your room and serve you and later chase you with chainsaws. From durian to chòu dòufu food is a glimpse into a country s culture. The rich spices, exotic fruits and bizarre restaurants can teach about the history, values and subcultures of a country and its locals. As one of my heroes, the dark and rebellious chef and TV personality, Anthony Bourdain, once said, Travel isn t always pretty. It isn t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your 36 Student council 2014

If you re caught on a golf course during a storm and are afraid of lightning, hold up a 1-iron. Not even God can hit a 1-iron. By Mr. Briggs 41 There are so many things to say and so little space to say it; seen as I m not particularly concise (despite hammering my students for not doing this), a short anecdote will have to Where to start, well, whilst at university it was there that I learnt to play golf, but it was never straightforward case of purchasing a set of clubs and off I went. Whenever you begin something new for the first time, it often begins with a mixture of apprehension, enthusiasm, disappointment and intolerance. I must say, that intolerance was what I felt the most. Remembering the first time when I began to play golf, there was one unforgettable moment. When asked whether I was new to the game of Golf, I was told not to worry just If only it was so simple I remember Jack at the time calling out, in his strong Yorkshire accent Ayup Matthew! mouth that I, who was watching, felt that a full crocodile might enter his mouth. The group was a score that each player had. from across the green. a FUN FACT. "J is the only letter that does not appear in the Periodic Table" Made In PH
