PAGE 010 USA Exchange Programme In line with the school s mission of providing an all-round education for our students and heed the call to enrich students other learning experiences (OLE) from the Education Bureau, we initiated a USA Exchange Programme for our students last year. It aims to provide an opportunity for students to be immersed in an authentic English learning environment for a year. We are confident this programme will have a positive and significant impact on the learning of the participating students in the short and long term. It is also an excellent opportunity for students to acquire first-hand experience of an overseas education, gain new insights of the world outside Hong Kong, and a better appreciation for diversity. Two students have been selected to join this programme and they are now studying in the USA. They are: Katherine Tsang Man O 1. Host Family: -Ipswich State -South Dakota () 2. School: -Ipswich High School -10 th grade 3. Subjects taken: -English, US history, Geometry, Vocal music, Digital photography, Biology, Psychology My first as Christmas by Katherine Tsang There is a rule in my school which states that before missing a school day, a student must hand-in all due assignments to his or her teachers. As luck would have it, on the day before I was to leave school for my vacation, my teachers gave me a whole lot of assignments. I had no choice but to finish the assignments on the same day. It was a truly painful experience. The most difficult was the biology project. I remember I spent HKD 200 and 2 hours to finish constructing that 3D animal cell. Now to talk about the vacation; we left Ipswich for Oregon on the18 th of December to spend Christmas with the other members of the Graves family. It was really cold and windy, and at one point the temperature fell to -13 degree Celsius. There were 7 of us in one dirty and cramped car and we had to drive 24 hours to get to our destination. Of course, we stopped at some motels for rest. In Oregon, we visited some friends homes and did some snow sledding as well as eat at some Chinese restaurants. I think we all had fun, especially the day my host s 2 nd younger sister put on a Santa Claus suit. On Christmas day, we exchanged and opened presents and I received lots of gifts. Christmas is a big deal for Americans and the atmosphere is better than Hong Kong. By the way, I m in love with Christmas now.

Subjects taken: -US history, Princ Biomedicine, English, Chemistry, Sports medicine, Pre Calculus PAGE 011 A new year and a new start by Wilson Tsoi On New Year s Eve, I went to my friend s house for a party. We had a lot of fun. We played a lot of games and we laughed a lot as well. Before the countdown started, we even prepared cold apple cider to drink. There happened to be an exchange student from Denmark and in his country, they had to jump when it was the New Year. So we all did the same thing. It was really funny when everyone jumped at the same time while trying not to spill their drinks. It was a great night. When my friends and I left the house, we even found out that the drinks that we had left in the car were all frozen. It was really that cold outside. When we checked, we were all shocked to discover that it was -20 C outside and an even colder -25 C inside the car. I have never experienced that kind of cold in all my life. We were all shivering because of the cold. We had to try five times before we could start up the car s engine and get the heat up in the car. I can still remember how I felt at that time. It was REALLY COLD. Two weeks into the New Year, it was time for our school s Spirit Game with Cheney High School. It is one of the main events in the schools calendars. For the past five years, we have won all the games, so this year we were intent on defending our title. The Spirit Game was essentially The Basketball match of the year. On the grandstands I was amazed by how many students were there. It was really loud inside. I was awed with how the students were motivated to cheer for their teams and how they kept that motivation for the whole game. That night, I found myself cheering along. It was all worth it as we held on to our title. The next day at school, most of us had lost our voice. I really hope that schools in Hong Kong can inspire that kind of spirit in their students too.
