The major results were as follows 1. The encounter probability between two office workers at the magnet space could be estimated by a formula based on Little s law, which considers the frequency of use as well as the mean and standard deviation of the sojourn time. By analyzing more data for the estimated formula of the encounter rate which is suggested on this study, it can confirm more minutely the actual situation of an encounter and the conversation inmagnet spaceof their offices. 2. Installing the lounge-like workspace adjacent to the café space increased the encounter probability between workers at the café corner. ENCOUNTERS AND CONVERSATIONS IN AN OFFICE CAFÉ CORNER AS A MAGNET SPACE Tai SATOH * and Tomonori SANO ** * Doctorʼs Course, Graduate School of Human Sciences, Waseda University, M.A. in Human Sciences ** Prof. Faculty of Human Sciences, Waseda University, Dr.Eng. Introduction In recent years, informal communication in a magnet space such as a café corner, copier corner, or smoking area has been suggested in many companies to provide a potential solution to the lack of communication among workers. However, the occurrence of conversation in such a magnet space is affected by the frequency with which workers encounter one another because it is not a place where workers are always present. Purpose The purpose of this study is to suggest a formula to estimate the encounter ratio between office workers and obtain insights on how to increase encounters and stimulate conversation between office workers in a magnet space, by conducting research on the activities of office workers at a café corner with a lounge in a free-address office. Methods The surveyed office in this study was remodeled in 2012. One two-day study before remodeling in 2011 and another after remodeling in 2013 were conducted to assess the activities of office workers. The café corner before remodeling was of the independent type, whereas that after remodeling was of the lounge-like workspace type juxtaposed to the café space. Office workers activities in the vicinity of the café corner were recorded by a fixed-point video camera. Analyses were conducted to assess the general use of the café corner and to determine the effect of the lounge-like workspace. The following six parameters regarding workers activities were extracted from the recorded videos: time of arrival, time of departure, presence or absence of encounter, presence or absence of conversation, time to conversation, and presence or absence of conversation at the lounge-like workspace before or after café use. Results The results of this study are as follows 1. The encounter probability between two office workers at the magnet space could be estimated by a formula based on Little s law, which considers the frequency of use as well as the mean and standard deviation of the sojourn time. 2. Lengthening the sojourn time at the magnet space directly increased the encounter probability, which then indirectly increased the conversation probability. 3. Installing the lounge-like workspace adjacent to the café space increased the encounter probability between workers at the café corner. Conclusion By analyzing further data to test the formula for estimating encounter rate as suggested by this study, the actual situation of an encounter and conversation in an office magnet space can be characterized in greater detail. The results of this study are expected to be useful for developing a concrete index that can be used for assessment when an office is newly developed. Further studies will be required to examine the effect of a special structure such as a lounge-like workspace. (2015 年 2 月 8 日原稿受理,2015 年 11 月 5 日採用決定 ) 291
