E-mail: katsuhikot@jamstec.go.jp Abstract The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) has developed and published several databases of biological information including images, videos and research results. However, users must access di#erent databases with incompatible user interfaces to obtain comprehensive information of a taxon. To improve the usability for potential users, an integrated system to access biological data in JAMSTEC is necessary. Thus, we newly developed a data system to integrate di#erent kinds of biological information under the framework of the project, the Information Bank on Marine Life and Environment, in JAMSTEC. The new data system named as the Biological Information System for Marine Life (BISMaL) was launched in May, 2009. BISMaL is primarily based on three databases maintained by JAMSTEC, including the Deep-sea Image Database, Deep-sea Video Database and Document Database, as important data sources. An upcoming database on marine biological specimens (Marine Biological Sample Database) is also ready to be linked to BISMaL. Using BISMaL, users can search taxa by name, distributional area, depth range and combinations of them or by browsing the taxonomic tree, and can access photographs, movies, distribution records, references and brief descriptions on species characteristics. However, some databases do not automatically link with BISMaL, leading to increased time and e#ort for the registration of information to BISMaL and potential errors during the registration. Additionally, the quality control system of data included in BISMaL is not fully established. Further cooperation with researchers to assure the quality of data and improvements of the data system to facilitate registration procedures are necessary to continuously provide awide variety of reliable information through BISMaL. E-mail: m-otani@marineco.co.jp Abstract Under the fund of Japanese government, Working Group 21 (WG-2 in PICES (North Pacific Marine Science Organization) was organized in 2006. The mission of the WG-21 was the establishment of open database system on non-indigenous species in the global marine and estuarine environments. Template of the PICES database had been proposed. Structure of the PICES database basically consists of; taxonomy of non-indigenous species, biogeography, habitat conditions, ecology including life history, process of invasion, and published references. Information in the database will be very strong tool for scientific studies and the measure to prevent marine invasion. However, the e#ectiveness of the database largely depends on quality of the data. This suggests that large e#orts to review the data-sources, which are obtained basically from published papers, should be required.
