GBIF s members include countries and international organizations who have signed a Memorandum of Understanding that they will share biodiversity data and contribute to the development of increasingly e#ective mechanisms for making those data available via the Internet. A large part of the primary data on biodiversity are the billion specimens held in natural history collections, as well as many geographical and ecological observations recorded by various means and stored in various media. However, many natural history museums have been facing challenges in digitization of natural history collections because they have huge numbers of museum specimens requesting many human resource, time and money to be digitized. In addition to these problems, there is another problem to make a standardized format of collection databases in the Internet because many museums have been using di#erent database software and di#erent formats for data entries. When Japanese natural history museums launched in a cooperative database project Science Museum Network (S-net) in 2005 to develop databases of natural history collections and build human networks of curators in Japan, it has been involved in the problems stated above. To overcome these problems, S-net has developed an electronic tool to convert di#erent data formats into a standardized format for GBIF which is called Darwin core. Over the past four years, S-net has greatly been growing in terms of data records of natural history collections, reaching beyond 1.12 million records. S-net has also getting a great success in developing human networks of museum curators providing good opportunities for them to exchange and share information related to databases and collection managements.
