3 Background The container ID number is the basic element to realize information communication and intelligent container transportation, it holds an important status in container transportation system, such as container inspection, monitoring etc. Container identification number include manufacturer s number and owner number etc.. At present, ISO had already standardized the owner number (ISO6346), but the container manufacturer s number has not been standardized internationally. 集装箱识别号是实现集装箱通信与智能运输的最基本要求, 在集装箱运输体系中占有重要的地位 ( 如检验与监管 -CSC,CCC,IMDG 等 ) 集装箱识别号包括制造号和箱东号目前,ISO 已经开展了箱东号 (ISO6346) 的标准化工作, 但集装箱制造号还没有开展国际标准化工作 3

4 Background Due to the absence of unified regulations to define the manufacturer s serial number, duplication or contradiction may happen frequently among different manufacturer s numbers. 7 Background The Identification Number on existing CSC Plate has no unified requirements due to different operators understandings, and thus cause confusions frequently. There are also misunderstandings between Manufacturer s Serial Number and Container Serial Number defined in ISO

11 The Composition of the Code New considering about Manufacturer s Serial Number CN WHS X Date of manufacturer: 6 digits; Country code (optional) : 2 letters; Container Factory code: 3 letters; Container type : 1 letters; Serial number: 6 digits; Check digit : 1 digit. 生产日期 + 国家代码 + 箱厂代码 + 集装箱类型代码 + 序列号 + 校验码 11

12 The Composition of the Code CN WHS X represents the date when the container is produced CNrepresents the country/region where the factory is located/registered, and the country codes already have a widely accepted international standard, and the code number are open, thus does not need registration WHSrepresents the container manufacturer, this manufacturer code needs to be assigned by the country. The proposed standard only provide the length and the naming principles. Countries can design and assign the code to domestic container manufacturers by themselves based on it. Note that the manufacturer code could be expressed with 3 letters or more in the standard to be developed. 12

13 The Composition of the Code CN WHS X Xrepresents the container type represents the product series number of the container in certain year, this number is formed stochastically by the manufacturer according to the production situation. Based on the productivity of each manufactures and different container types, 8 digits seems to be enough, the future standard will give the digital figure represents the check code, its specific mechanism may be referred to ISO6346 check code principles. 13
