1 Ref: DSE/CR 3/ May 2017 HONG KONG DIPLOMA OF SECONDARY EDUCATION EXAMINATION 2017 Examination Circular No. (9) 2016/ Examination Timetable and Date of Release of Results 1. This circular is to inform schools of the examination schedule for the 2018 Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE) and the tentative date of release of results, and to seek schools support and co-operation to ensure the smooth conduct of the examinations. 2. In drawing up the 2018 HKDSE examination schedule for Category A subjects (Annex 1), consideration has been given to the school holidays for the academic year 2017/18, the subject combination statistics for the 2016 and 2017 examinations as well as the general pattern of the 2017 examination. The main features of the 2018 examination timetable are as follows: (a) As the 2018 Easter public holidays will fall between 30 March and 2 April, the core subject examinations (i.e. Chinese Language, Liberal Studies, English Language and Mathematics Compulsory Part) will be held from 9 to 16 April after the Easter school break. (b) The Chinese Language speaking examinations will be held from the second week to the third week of March and the English Language speaking examinations in early May to mid-may. (c) For the core subjects with the largest entries, some schools will have to suspend classes so as to provide their classrooms as examination venues. While the possible class suspension could be up to five days, the majority of schools are only required to suspend classes for one to two days. (d) For elective subjects, those with an SBA component or options requiring equating will be examined earlier. Subjects not implementing SBA will be examined later. Simulations of the subject combinations have been conducted with a view to minimising the number of candidates who have to sit examinations for two or three consecutive days. (e) (f) Some smaller-entry elective subjects will be examined during the Easter school break and in early May. Although two examination dates will overlap with the English Language speaking examinations, candidates will not be arranged to sit two examinations on the same day. Three examination dates have been tentatively earmarked for Design & Applied Technology, Physical Education and Music examinations. Two or more of these subjects will be scheduled on the same day only if there is no overlap of candidates. 3. The examination timetable for Category C (Other Languages) subjects for the November 2017 series is shown in Annex 2. Please note that the June series examinations will cease to be offered with effect from the 2018 HKDSE. Dates of Release of Results 4. The date for the release of the 2018 Categories A and B examination results is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, 11 July The exact date for the release of results for the Category C November 2017 series examinations will be announced in mid-january

Schools are requested to note the highlights of the 2018 examination timetable in paragraph 2 above when planning their calendars and activities for 2017/ Over the years, schools have been our important partners in examination administration through their provision of invigilation staff and school premises for the conduct of examinations, which is a requirement of schools' participation in the public examinations. Despite the declining candidature in recent years, we still encountered difficulty in securing sufficient venues for written and speaking examinations for both normal and SEN candidates. As a result, some of your candidates have to be allocated to examination centres other than their choice of district.
