9 Dear PECians of Richmond PEC in Christ, 8 I, on behalf of all the PECians from Hong Kong, covet the privilege to write for this commemorative occasion of celebrating the inauguration of the new church of Richmond PEC which has been serving the Lord and the people around the area for years honorably. How wonderful that we witness the might of our Lord in the process of erecting this new church. In Him everything is possible though people around showed doubts to the whole project. We know that PECians of Richmond PEC did face doors that seemed too hard to open for the new church but praise the Lord that His mighty hands turned every impossibility to possibility. We also witness that the united efforts as well as continuous prayers among all of the PECians in both sides of the earth are really incredible! Though we are far away from each other, we are in the bondage of Christ s love. So, therefore the new church marks the ample grace and provision of our Lord as well as the love of PECians. I heartily wish for the best of Richmond PEC, the brightest lampstand of our Lord as she continues to serve Him and the people around area. May God s wonderful and richest blessings be upon His church and each one of you! And May His Glory and Excellency be extolled forever and ever!! 18 Thy Will Be Done On Earth Stephen Li Then rose up the chief of the fathers of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests, and the Levites, with all them whose spirit God had raised, to go up to build the house of the Lord which is in Jerusalem. (Ezra 1:5) Imagine if you will a line of people standing each at arms length, stretching 150 feet, comprised of men and women, pre-teens to seniors. They are passing along one to another heavy chairs from a truck at curbside across a muddy yard into an empty hall. Or envision two huge mounds of wet wood chips being systematically reduced one shovel at a time on a chilly winter s day, transported by wheel-barrel or bucket clasped by young hands and old, to be spread around blueberry shrubs and fruit tree saplings planted row on row. Such is the power of Almighty God to move people! As we stand in this sanctuary and marvel at the wondrous works of the Lord, we know that it is not in the piling of one stone upon another or the nailing of one piece of wood to the next that the glory of God is manifest. It is in the demolition of the old self and the building up of the new self in faith and reverence that reveals the hand of God. If thou wouldest seek unto God betimes, and make thy supplication to the Almighty; if thou wert pure and upright; surely now He would awake for thee, and make the habitation of thy righteousness prosperous. Though thy beginning was small, yet thy latter end should greatly increase. (Job 8:5-7) In a tiny, ramshackle wood shed in Hong Kong 44 years ago, the Peace Evangelical Church was born. Its first parishioners were poor people living in the surrounding shantytown. By the grace and will of God, it has grown to some 35 branch-churches in Hong Kong, Macau, California and British Columbia. Here in Richmond, the church began with a handful of people meeting in a converted garage. For the past 11 years, while we have been fruitful in numbers, we were not favoured with a permanent place in which to worship the Lord. Nonetheless, we were content with the circumstances, knowing that in His time, God would provide. As the congregation grew and the exigencies of spiritual nurturing increased, it gradually became apparent that the limit to further expansion was reached. Yet we recognized that without the guidance of the Holy Spirit, any development plans would be futile. For a long time, the brothers and sisters made their supplication in their prayers. Then, the Word came down: Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the Lord. (Haggai 1:8) An opportunity to purchase an old synagogue building presented itself at the end of Even accounting for certain necessary renovations, the cost fell within the financial means of the church. Upon conferring, our elders and deacons endorsed the making of an offer, but in the end we were outbid. It was obvious that God did not mean for us to take that route. With scarcely time to be disappointed, we learned of a property on No. 5 Road that was for sale. We knew that in Richmond, rezoning for assembly usage was permissible in very few areas. This was one 17

19 18 of them. A quick decision had to be rendered to seize this rare opening. Yet the anticipated cost to buy the land and build a full-scale edifice seemed prohibitive. Our leadership fervently prayed for direction. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6) With faith in God s providence, the deal was signed and sealed. Our initial plan was to utilize the existing house on the lot for fellowships and classes and build a bare-bones auditorium for worship. As circumstances allowed in the future, we would add to the structure. Even then the projected budget was high, but with all the brothers and sisters fervently cleaving to the Lord, we were confident of success. Thus a church-building committee was struck of brothers and sisters who would take up the task of coordinating all aspects of the project. Immediately they set about interviewing and engaging the consultants who would formulate the design. However, it soon came to light upon further consultation with these professionals and experienced builders that firstly, the total cost to build in stages would be much more than to build all at once; secondly, the resultant structure would be unwieldy and inefficient; and thirdly, we would not immediately have the needed space to do God s work, which was our primary objective to begin with. Should we take on the risk of a full building commitment? Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations: spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes; (Isaiah 54:2) Hearkening to this pronouncement, the coordinating brothers established a new working budget through careful estimation. It would mean everyone making extraordinary efforts in their offerings, and the church carrying a large debt. Still, upon advice from the leadership, the congregation affirmed this commitment. As the revised building plans were being drawn up and site preparations undertaken, the task of applying for rezoning approval was also initiated. With little experience in such matters, the building committee relied totally on the guidance of the Lord. Then it came time for construction tenders to be called when at long last the plans were ready for submission. By then, the real estate market in BC was in full bloom, and we knew that the budget likely could not be maintained. Nonetheless, it was a shock when the final bids were disclosed. When the figures came back 50% higher than anticipated, our faith was sorely tested. Should we postpone or abandon the project? Through earnest prayer, we beseeched the Lord to show us His will. The Lord hath heard my supplication; the Lord will receive my prayer. (Psalm 6:9) Responding to an appeal, several members offered their homes as collateral for loans if required, and pledges for donations were made that demonstrated the collective faith of the congregation. We determined that the way was clear to continue. Thus we proceeded to negotiate with one of the builders and finalize a contract. The next hurdle was obtaining the building permit to start construction. Because of involvement by both the provincial and city governments in approving the rezoning, and new statutes governing transfer of lands out of the Agricultural Land Reserve, the process was very cumbersome and protracted. Add to that the crush of new building projects inundating staff at city hall, our own

20 inexperience, and the lack of coordination by the consultants, and soon the contractual deadline to start was past. The crisis loomed large, exacerbated by a conflict in human perceptions, and with no glimmer of any quick solution, it appeared that things were unraveling. At an emergency meeting of the council of elders and deacons, an urgent appeal to God in prayer was called for. And this is the confidence that we have in Him, that, if we ask any thing according to His will, He heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him. (1 John 5:14-15) Indeed, that very next day, the building permit was issued. We finally commenced construction in April of And it has been a revelation watching the transformation of a piece of farmland into a temple of worship. Throughout this time, the rod and the staff of God have been our comfort. There have been many instances of anguish, consternation and frustration as concepts and components failed to mesh, schedules fell behind, efforts didn t meet expectations, and egos clashed. But all the brothers and sisters stood firmly as one, and their prayers carried us through all the fiery darts of the Wicked. For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy. I will abide in Thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of Thy wings. (Psalm 61:3-4) Recognizing that the new church will be an impediment to his schemes, the Enemy used every means at his disposal to erect obstacles, including physical affliction on the persons and loved ones of the membership. Even at the last, he threw up roadblocks by hardening the hearts of the government inspectors who oversaw the project, causing us, who must confess to little faith, much anxiety. But in man s weakness and frailty is the strength of God made perfect. In the end, for that which human endeavour could not surmount, the Lord made His intervention. It is indeed the work of God that we bear witness to here today, for except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. (Psalm 127:1) And still the miracles continue. To date, we have donations totaling over 85% of our final cost, with a substantial portion coming from our brothers and sisters in Hong Kong and elsewhere. The Lord has moved them to consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works. (Hebrews 10:24) We could not have envisioned at the beginning how such a sum could be raised by our small congregation, and yet God has led us step by step into the capaciousness of His providence so that we would not be timid and retreat. Now His house stands in glory here on No. 5 Road in Richmond, where the spiritual battleground has been laid out before us. It is our blessing that the Lord has seen fit to use us as His instrument to prepare this outpost for the coming struggle. To our Heavenly Father and our Saviour Jesus Christ, we humbly submit our thanksgiving and adoration for the abundant grace that have been bestowed on us through this holy work. May all glory, honour, exaltation and authority be to our Lord and King! But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him. (1 Corinthians 2:9) 19

33 Thanksgiving from Louie Hui - 11 years 32 Praise the Lord for his blessings upon the Peace Evangelical Church! The Lord Jesus has been gracious and encouraging towards many members of this assembly. Over the past 11 years, I witnessed many blessings and they are listed as follows: 1. Because Jesus touched many members, we replied with a zealous interest in the Gospel works; 2. Because the Lord worked through this assembly, many people heard the Gospel, repented of their sins and believed in Jesus; 3. By the grace of the Lord, many members grew strong in Christ and took up positions as teachers, evangelists, and many other positions serving the Lord; 4. A few members, who were led by the merciful Lord, went to Bible seminary and prepared themselves for full time service. They are now serving the Lord in a few countries; 5. A few members, who were directed by the loving kindness of the Lord, went overseas as missionaries; 6. We were gathered together in a garage at the first meeting 11 years ago, but God has given us a beautiful building now. Praise the Lord; 7. Praise the Lord for He equipped and guided our assembly's leaders and members. We were led by the powerful and almighty God who enabled us to overcome many challenges and stay on the right track; and 8. Praise the Lord for He sent us many fine teachers from other faithful assemblies. The congregation has benefited greatly from these godly teachers. Personally, I have a few things for which I need to praise the Lord: 1. I could not finish reading the Bible even once for many years. But after I joined this assembly, I read the Bible several times in a few years. Praise the Lord for His patience, and thank our leaders for their encouragment; 2. Praise the Lord! Because God encouraged this person, and with the help of many brothers and sisters, I wrote my testimony in a book called "Lost But Found" This book benefits many people, and it is used by the Lord to introduce people to Him: and 3. As this assembly emphasizes Gospel work, I had many opportunities to work with many faithful members to bear witness for the Gospel. God used us to introduce Himself to people. A few of them professed the faith to accept Christ as their personal saviour. Praise the Lord!
