Pope Francis, Lent 2017 Fourth Sunday of lent, March 26, 2017 Our remaining Soup Supper is Thursday, March 30. Join us for soup, bread and fellowship from 6:00-7:00 pm. We have invited a representative from organizations that we tithe to, and asked them to give a brief update of their program. A free will offering will be donated to them at the end of the evening. Tom Florek, S.J. Mercy in Action Jesuit priest, professor, scholar, and pastoral leader will wrap up our four-week series by bringing before us all that we have discerned through our prayers, both individual and collective, and will help shape our innermost desires and dreams into some grace-filled work of mercy in our family, church, community, world. Exciting new offerings for Elementary Faith Formation! Thank you for your response to our recent survey for elementary school families. We appreciate your feedback! In an effort to accommodate the needs of our entire faith community and changes in local school schedules, we asked for your opinion regarding some new opportunities for Elementary Faith Formation (grades 1-5). Given your input, we are excited to once again offer our Summer Faith Formation option on Monday-Thursday, 9am-noon, July and July 31-Aug 3. (Please note that this year, we have consolidated our July and August sessions.) During the school year, we will continue to offer our Sunday afternoon (2-5 pm) program, which takes place approximately once per month from October through Easter (for a total of 8 sessions). In addition, we are pleased to announce 2 options for faith formation that will take place in our Catechesis of the Good Shepherd-inspired Atrium. You can choose Sunday mornings from 8:45-10:45 or Monday afternoons from 4:30-6:30 for your child to spend exploring and contemplating their faith in this sacred retreat-like learning environment. These classes will take place every other week for a total of 12 sessions. Registration information will be announced soon! Grieving with great hope Grieving with Great Hope is a 5 week grief support series that offers a prayerful, practical and personal approach for anyone who is mourning the loss of a loved one. If you have lost a spouse, a child (including pregnancy loss), a grandchild, parent, another family member or a friend, you are encouraged to attend. Presenters will be Fr. Joe Dailey, Fr. Mike Verschaeve as well as John and Sandy O Shaughnessy from Good Mourning Ministry, a local Catholic bereavement organization. This is a joint effort with our parish and St. Joseph parish with help from Modetz Funeral Home. This year the sessions will be held at Christ the Redeemer on April 20, 27, May 4, 11 and 18 from 7-9pm. Registration is $20. Scholarships are available. If you would like to help please call or Lisa Pratt at outreach@ctredeemer.org. Friday night at the movies Looking for a good way to prepare yourself for a prayerful and reflective Holy Week? Come to our Friday Night at the Movies program, 7pm on April 7, and view the awardwinning short documentary film, "The White Helmets." Honored at this year's Golden Globes and Oscars, the 40-minute film tells of a group of courageous and compassionate volunteers, the White Helmets, who rush to the scene after bombings in various cities across Syria to help rescue their warravaged neighbors. It is a true-life inspirational example of faith-filled individuals coming together to live out the Easter message of "giving our lives away in love for others." The film is subtitled with the men telling us in their own words about the challenges they face as they risk their own lives in order to help bring life to others. Please join us on April 7 for this Peace and Justice program. It could lead to more prayerful and reflective moments in your Holy Week. Today we reach the midpoint of Lent, but I want to share part of an interview Pope Francis gave to Scarp de tennis, a magazine run by the homeless and socially excluded in Italy. The interview was published on the eve of Ash Wednesday, reflecting on the traditional Lenten practice of almsgiving. The Pope said that giving something to someone in need is always right, and it should be done with respect and compassion, because tossing money and not looking in [their] eyes is not a Christian way of behaving. The Holy Father said people justify not giving to the homeless by telling themselves things such as: I give money and then he spends it on drinking a glass of wine. But, the Pope said, if a glass of wine is the only happiness he has in life, that s okay. Instead ask yourself what do you do on the sly? What happiness do you seek in secret? Another way to look at it, Pope Francis said, is to recognize how you are luckier, with a house, a wife, children and then ask why should the responsibility to help be pushed onto someone else. The way one reaches out to the person asking for help is important, he added, and must be done by looking them in the eyes and touching their hands. When encountering people who live on the street, the Pope said he always greets them and sometimes inquires about their lives and background. The Pope told a story from his time in Buenos Aires, where he was archbishop, of a mother with five children. While the father was at work and the rest of the family ate lunch, a homeless man called in to ask for food. Rather than letting the children give away their father s dinner for that evening, the mother taught the children to give away some of their own food. If we wish to give, we must give what is ours! the Pope said. Throughout the interview, the Holy Father often referred to the idea of walking in each other s shoes. According to the Pope, to walk in other s shoes is a way to escape our own egoism. In the shoes of the other, we learn to have a great capacity for understanding, for getting to know difficult situations, he said. The Pope maintained that words alone are not enough: what is needed, he said, is the greatness to walk in the shoes of the other. The Pope also called for a more compassionate attitude towards refugees across Europe saying that many of those arriving here are fleeing from war or hunger. All of us in this world, the Pope said, are part of this situation and need to find ways to help and benefit those around us. According to the Holy Father, this responsibility is especially true of governments and the Pope used the example of the work of the Saint Egidio community that has established humanitarian corridors for groups of vulnerable migrants in order to make his point. Regarding the 13 refugees from Lesbos taken in by the Vatican, the Pope pointed out that the families have integrated well into society, with the children being enrolled in schools and their parents having found work. This, according to Pope Francis, is an example of immigrants wanting to fit into and contribute to a new country, and achieving that desire. Fr. Joe

3 P a g e 3 I overheard you talking with another parent after Mass last weekend about being a Good-Enough Parent. What do you mean by that? My daughters are ages 14, 12 & 7. At the last set of teacher conferences, three of their teachers said, in almost identical language, that my girls are very self-advocating. At first I wasn t sure how to take in this information. It felt a bit like a back-handed compliment. When I shared by bewilderment on the teachers comments with a friend, she recommended I google pediatrician and psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott who researched thousands of mothers and their children back in the 50 s and came to realize that children actually benefit when their mothers fail them in manageable ways (not major failures of course, such as abuse or neglect). He was the first to proclaim the benefits of being a good enough parent in the longterm growth and well-being of our children. When our babies are infants, we do our best to respond to their every need. As soon as they cry, we rush to snuggle, change or feed them offering immediate comfort. Our response at this age is crucial in teaching our children that they are safe and will be cared for. But, of course, this level of attentiveness cannot be sustained, nor should it be according to Dr. Winnicott s study. In fact, he said the best thing we can do is slowly become good enough parents. In other words; our children actually need us to fail in tolerable ways on a regular basis so they learn to live in an imperfect world. He states that every time we don t hear them call us right away, are unable to give them our full attention, feed them a dinner they don t particularly enjoy or are unable to attend a concert or game, we are preparing them to accept and function in a world that will quite regularly frustrate and disappoint. Our children learn, through our failures that the world doesn t revolve around them, that life isn t always fair, that they won t always get their way. But they also learn that despite life s inevitable disappointments and conflicts, they will still be okay. Even if it were somehow possible to be the perfect parent (whatever that might look like), the end result would be a fragile child who is unable to cope with even the slightest disappointment. The gift of the good enough parent is that perfection is never offered as an option, rather our children learn to accept, expect and rise above the challenging experiences of anger, boredom and sadness. Resilience is the great gift of the good enough parent. Are our children safe, fed, clothed and loved? Are we getting it right most of the time? If yes, then we need to be gentle with ourselves and trust that when our kids feel annoyed or frustrated or sad because we have let them down, that in those many small moments, they learn that life is hard, that they can feel terrible, and that they will bounce back. Each time we disappoint and they get through it, Dr. Winnicott s research tells us they will be a little bit stronger for it. I like Dr. Winnicott. In fact, I d like to hug him and have him over for dinner. 4 P a g e 4 Lansing update Safe Delivery Law Update Passes Senate; Continues to Michitan House Michigan's Safe Delivery Law protects newborns by allowing parents to safely, legally, and anonymously surrender an infant, from birth to 72 hours of age, to an emergency service provider. This law provides a safe alternative for those who might be frightened or panicked about being parents, without risk of being charged with abandonment. Employees at emergency service providers, like fire departments, hospitals, or police stations, ensure these newborns are cared for until they are accepted by a child placement agency. Since the measure took effect in 2001, the state Department of Health and Human Services has created educational materials on the law and has maintained a Safe Delivery hotline ( ). Over a hundred babies have been saved as a result. The Michigan Legislature is currently considering Senate Bill 215, sponsored by Senator Judy Emmons (R-Sheridan), which would provide anonymity for parents who use the law. Parents would be listed as "unknown" on the birth certificate, listing the baby as "Baby Doe." Michigan Catholic Conference (MCC) has supported the measure, which will hopefully encourage parents in these situations to visit emergency providers, rather than put children at risk. The bill passed with unanimous support in the Senate on Thursday, March 16. MCC is hopeful Senate Bill 215 will continue to progress with bipartisan support. Help Hope Warming Shelter, contact your Michigan Senator and Representative The homeless often fall low on the government's funding priority list. Funding has been flat for more than 15 years and yet each year those who aid the homeless are asked to do more with the same money. This year, thanks to advocacy, the Governor has written an increase for emergency shelter into the 2018 budget. Not sure this will happen again for another 15 years! Elizabeth Kelly from the Hope Warming Center is asking us to contact the elected officials listed below: Senator Marleau jimmarleau@senate.michigan.gov and Representative Canfield EdwardCanfield@house.mi.gov Here is a suggested message: Please support the emergency shelter increase as proposed in the 2018 budget submitted by Governor Snyder. Elizabeth says, We do have a friend in Senator Marleau who has been to HOPE many times and is a member at Christ the Redeemer in Lake Orion. 5 P a g e 5 This is a ministry that has very caring, compassionate individuals that are members of Christ the Redeemer that have been trained to give quality Christian care to people experiencing a crisis in their life. If a person is facing a challenge such as divorce, grief, job loss, illness, loneliness, or any other of life s challenges a Stephen Ministry can be there during this time. Stephen Ministers meet for about one hour each week offering care for as long as it is needed. If you would like more information about Stephen Ministry or in need of a Stephen Minister, contact Roger Buches at tithing committee members needed As part of our baptismal promise to take care of those in need, Christ the Redeemer commits 10% of our offerings to organizations who serve the poor. The Tithing Committee meets monthly where members evaluate and decide what organizations we donate to. Approximately 30% is disbursed to foreign or international organizations and roughly 70% is donated to national and local agencies. As several current committee members are finishing their three year term, we are looking for parishioners who may be interested in submitting their name to the lottery that is held in May. August begins the 3 year term. How do we keep our young people safe as they venture out with their friends? This feels especially pertinent as we are heading into warmer weather and graduation season is right around the corner. It s called the X-Plan and works like this. If your teen is at a party or any other gathering and finds themselves in or near a situation that seems unsafe or out of control, they text their parents with the letter X. This lets you (the parent or guardian) know that your teen feels unsafe and needs an immediate out. Each family comes up with their own game plan, but basically, after receiving the text, the parent immediately calls the teen and explains that something has come up and they need to return home immediately. This puts the fault of leaving on the parent s shoulders and helps teens save face no questions asked. The X-Plan was originally designed by a Pastor who was counseling teens in an addiction group. He asked them, 'How many of you have found yourself in situations where things started happening that you weren t comfortable with, but you stuck around, mainly because you felt like you didn t have a way out?' They all raised their hands. He decided to put the plan in place for his own teens and the idea has taken off. So often our young people find themselves in situations that have taken an unexpected turn and they fear calling for help because they don t want to get into trouble or disappoint us. Let your teens know you have their back, no matter what. reflection From the youth minister, John 9:4-41 In this week s Gospel, people refuse to learn from a miracle. Jesus heals a blind man. Unfortunately, people focus more on trying to discredit Jesus, the man healed, and the miracle. Ironically, the formerly blind man receives not only his physical sight, but also the importance of following Jesus, while the people with sight are totally blind to this. Try to avoid spiritual blindness at all cost. It s easy to defend bad choices or a dangerous lifestyle. It can be really tough to admit mistakes or consider changing bad habits. God often guides us away from sinful behaviors that can hurt us and others. Many times he puts people in our lives that ve made similar mistakes. Listen to those people, especially when they talk about how Jesus has helped them change course. Open your mind and your eyes this Lent. Take a close look at some of the choices you are making and the ways you re choosing to be blind to what you know is right. What changes can you make in your own life to help break bad habits and see the world through new eyes? Pay attention to those that are trying to help. You just might see that God is trying to cure your own blindness. Lisa Andridge Spring Break Mission & Summer Mission For the past 17 years or so, the teens of our parish have spent part of their Spring Break and one week in the summer volunteering with the Motor City Blight Busters in the Old Redford district of Detroit. We begin our day with a social gathering and prayer at CTR and then car pool to the city to be Christ s hands and feed in action. After a day filled with new adventures, we return home dirty, sweaty and tired and ready to dive into another day. Our days are filled with a variety of activities and include painting murals, cleaning trash, clearing home sites, spreading mulch and gravel and even weeding and sweeping the streets. There is no job too big or too small for a heart that walks with Jesus. If you have a teen in grades 9-12 and would like more information, please contact Lisa Andridge in the Youth Ministry Office. Because we are traveling off-site, all teens must register for these events. Paperwork for Spring Break Mission is now available on the website. Hispanic Youth Conference The Hispanic Youth Conference will be held on May 6, 2017 at University of Detroit Mercy. The conference is titled, Who am I to Jesus? Who is Jesus to me? All Hispanic high school youth throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit are invited to attend. We are excited to welcome back Padre Agustino as the Presenter. Please contact either Gabriela Mendez or Lisa Andridge in the church office for details. This year s Graduation Mass and Dinner is scheduled for Saturday, June 3 at 5 pm. For further information about Widowed Friends, come visit our website at May is National Foster Care Month The Children in Foster Care & Orphans Support Committee provide help to the children in St. Francis Orphanage, Vista Maria House, Christ Child House, and MYOI- Foster Youth in Transition. We will be having a picnic for the boys at Christ Child House this summer which is very rewarding for all volunteers when you see the boys' smiles. In September we will host a drive for Vista Maria, helping to provide for their greatest needs. We could use extra hands for the picnic and the Giving Tree drive in September when we collect.
