This; Minimizes the dosage on the field - reducing residues or harm to non targeted organisms; Minimizes volume and cost of product; Eliminates application cost and timing concerns; Provides initial + advanced pest control to plant. Market Access Virtually the whole market is controlled by Bayer and Syngenta. Sales are direct from manufacturers to seed companies. Bayer has about a 55% share of the canola seed market so uses its own treatments on its own seed. There are a limited number of other canola companies. The best opportunities are: establish generic clothianidin or thiamethoxam and compete on price. The value is primarily with the insecticide but a fungicide offer to go with it is required Find a treatment that enhances the current offers that can be added to the current treatment, such as something that controls club foot 根肿病 or promotes growth, for example. Market Geography The prairie provinces comprise the vast majority of the opportunity. 33 General Info Global Market The global commercial seed market is dominated by the US and China, with around a 27% and 20% share, respectively. By crop, maize is the major seed market, followed by soybeans, wheat, rice and cotton. The market is driven by numerous factors, including: Early planting for maximizing yields; Protection from nematode damages; farming methods, such as no-till; commodity prices; government interventions; increasing awareness; higher-value seed needs better protection and improved seed treatments and seed treatment technology. Recent introductions include DuPont s cyantraniliprole 氰虫酰胺. Cypermethrin 氯虫菊酯 is pretty common at least in China and in parts of Europe. 35

Fungicide seed treatments include long established ones, such as metalaxyl 甲霜灵, carboxin 萎锈灵, carbendazim 多菌灵 and thiram 福美双, also fludioxonil 咯菌腈. Carbendazim-thiram 多菌灵 - 福美双 is the leading product in Argentina, and hard to get changed because it is to cheap. BASF has a very high market share in Brazil with Standak Top, primarily because of fipronil for lesser corn stalk borer control. Standak Top contains fipronil 氟虫腈, Thiophanate-methyl 甲基托布津 Strobilurins, such as Syngenta s azoxystrobin 嘧菌酯, BASF s pyraclostrobin 吡唑醚菌酯 and Bayer s trifloxystrobin 肟菌酯, are also used. Recent introductions include Syngenta s Vibrance (sedaxane 氟唑环菌胺 ) and Bayer s Ilevo (fluopyram 氟吡菌酰胺 ). Bayer describes it as the first such product to control soil-borne sudden death syndrome. Insecticidal seed treatments are again typically the neonicotinoids: Syngenta s thiamethoxam 噻虫嗪 (Cruiser 5FS); Bayer/Valent s clothianidin 噻虫胺 ; and imidacloprid 吡虫啉. Nematode pests include the soybean cyst nematodes (Heterodera glycines). Syngenta s Avicta (abamectin 阿维菌素 ) is popular. Bionematicides are now on the market, including Bayer s Votivo (Bacillus firmus 坚强芽孢杆菌 ) and Syngenta s Clariva (Pasteuria nishizawae 巴斯德杆菌 ). Rhizobia 根瘤菌 inoculants are applied as seed treatments to enhance nitrogen fixation. Rhizobia application is a very important part of the soybean seed treatment business, although less profitable. 36

Seed treatment usage in China is low, and India tends to rely on older products.
