3 Conference Synopsis The survival of humanity on this planet relies on a radical repositioning of our cities. In the face of unprecedented global population growth, urbanization, pollution increase and climate change, it is no longer enough to simply create buildings that minimize their environmental footprint. The reduction of operating and embodied energy consumption in every single building is, of course, vitally important but even this is likely not enough to mitigate the huge issues at stake. We need to start considering how every building can start working with others in a harmonious urban whole by maximizing urban/building infrastructure, sharing resources, generating and storing energy, and looking for completely new ways to improve the building s contribution to the city; physically, environmentally, culturally, and socially. Cities thus need to be thought of, and buildings planned for, in all three dimensions they cannot just be vehicles for isolated programs and Each stratified horizon of a tower has an opportunity to draw from the characteristics of the city and external environment, both of which vary widely with height. Wind, sun, rain, temperature, and urban grain are not the same through 360 degrees of plan or 360 meters of height, and our buildings need to both recognize, and draw opportunity, from that. This will be the primary subject of debate at the CTBUH 2014 Shanghai Conference. The discussion will drive thinking beyond just buildings, to considering cities as a whole. What best practices are some cities in the world already doing, and what else can be done? 4 Conference Themes & Call for Abstracts/Papers The 2014 conference will convene speaking and poster presentations, panel discussions, and a major exhibition focused on the overall conference theme Future Cities: Towards Sustainable Vertical Urbanism. In addition, there will be a number of City Rooms, each highlighting best practice urban and building case studies from speci c cities internationally. CTBUH members 1 of all disciplines interested in presenting at the event are now encouraged to complete the one page abstract template by the January 17, 2014 deadline, showing how their proposed presentation and technical paper will address the conference theme. The abstract should be submitted to the Conference International Scienti c Committee using the standard template located at the Conference website All abstracts/papers will be subject to rigorous peer review before acceptance into the conference program. 6 Published Proceedings & Translation As the recognized international authority on tall buildings, CTBUH conferences differ significantly from the many commercial conferences that are now being held around the world, in terms of both quality of knowledge-sharing and networking opportunities. Dissemination of best-practice information is of primary importance at every CTBUH conference. Thus, every presentation given at the 2014 Conference will be substantiated by a paper, which will be rigorously peer-reviewed and published in the proceeding: a series of high-quality, books around 1,000 pages in total length, which will be produced in two languages (English and Chinese). This proceeding, which delegates will receive in both hard-copy and digital format at the Conference itself, will form an important historical archive long after the event has ended. Language & Translation The official languages of the Conference will be both English and Chinese, with simultaneous translation of all presentations from English to Chinese and vice versa. The 2014 Shanghai Conference Proceeding publication will also be produced in both languages. Authors are encouraged to consider now how they can submit their final papers in both English and Chinese, perhaps drawing on translation expertise within your organization. The CTBUH has very limited resources for translation so your assistance in this manner would be greatly appreciated. Every conference attendee will receive a copy of the conference proceedings. 10 Conference Venue Grand Hyatt, Jin Mao The Conference will be held in the 5-star facilities of the Grand Hyatt Hotel in the landmark Jin Mao Tower within the heart of Pudong, Shanghai. Perhaps the best known of all Asian skyscrapers, the 1999 Jin Mao has been specifically selected as the venue due to the high quality of its facilities, and its location in the epicenter of high-rise activity in Shanghai, specifically among the supertall trio of towers that are shaping the Pudong skyline: Jin Mao, the neighboring Shanghai World Financial Center, and the Shanghai Tower which is expected to be nearing completion by the time of the conference. Delegates will have an opportunity to tour these buildings and hear from the building s owners, architects and other connected parties during the conference. 12 Technical Workshops Tuesday September 16th The first day of the conference will be focused on technical workshops covering a wide variety of relevant subjects sustainability, seismic design, geotechnics, wind engineering, façade design, internal environment, etc. Sponsors are sought for these workshops, to drive the program and agenda. CTBUH Leaders and Working Group Chairs will join with conference delegates to debate the main issues affecting these fields at the technical workshops, and lay down a plan for output from the group, hopefully leading to the production of CTBUH Technical Guides at some point in the future. 16 Technical & Regional/City Tours Technical Tours, Friday September 19th The fourth day of the conference will be dedicated to Technical Tours, a key aspect of Council conferences. Delegates are able to choose (by registering in advance two tours of buildings either completed or under construction, where they will learn from the colleagues responsible for the design, construction, and/or manage ment of the building through on site presentations, as well as by extensively touring the building itself. The exact buildings that will be o ered for Technical Tours are currently being determined. Tours in 2012 included: Shanghai Tower, Shanghai World Financial Center, Jin Mao Tower, Shanghai IFC, Jing An Kerry Centre, Jiushi Corporation Headquarters, Riviera TwinStar Square, Tomorrow Square, and Wheelock Square. Regional/City Tours, Friday September 19th As an alternative to the building technical tours, delegates can take the opportunity to experience other key cities in China on Day 4 of the conference, to see some of the major developments happening throughout the country. Each tour which will typically involve a two or three day stay in the city (with ights and accommodation paid by delegate will embrace a number of the key tall buildings either complete or under construction in the city, as well as some of the cultural sites. The tours will be led by Sponsors / CTBUH members / members of the Conference Regional Steering Committee. The exact Regional Tour agendas are currently being determined. 23 Call for Committees In addition to the Conference Secretariat, four important committees will be established to assist with aspects of the Conference, as outlined below. All committee members should be CTBUH members at either the organizational or individual level. To express an interest in joining one of the committees, please contact CTBUH Executive Director Antony Wood at Local Steering Committee This committee consisting of selected CTBUH members based in Shanghai will steer the overall direction of the Conference; help organize speakers, sponsors and technical tours; and help with promotion of the event. Regional Steering Committees These committees consisting of selected colleagues and sponsoring companies in cities throughout China will help promote the event and organize speakers / sponsors in their city/region, as well as organize/lead a Regional Tour in their city on Friday September 19th.
