5 Shanghai History Museum Located in the base of the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, this museum does a wonderful job of covering Shanghai s concession past, Century Avenue (near Lujiazui Huan Lu) [8am-10pm] Shanghai's Film Museum Showing Shanghai's film history from its very beginning in 1896 until the "blockbuster" days of the 21st century. Located inside a former film studio in Shanghai's Xujiahui. 595 Caixi Road North (near Nandan Road) [Tue-Sun 9am-4.30pm] Sun Yat Sen Former Residence A lovely house with original decorations and a great little garden. 18 STREET SNACKS Stacks of bamboo steamers, 1 metre in diameter, contain a panoply of steamed buns. Favourites include: Pork and egg yolk (dan huang rou bao) Shiitake mushroom & green vegetable (xiang gu cai bao) Pork and radish (luo bo si bao). Breakfast stands! If you re lucky you ll get a seat, but the majority of breakfasters just grab their snacks and go. Deep-fried dough sticks (you tiao) commonly eaten with porridge (zhou) - made from millet; or soy milk (dou jiang) Pan-fried pork buns (sheng jian bao) crispy on the bottom, with a soupy pork filling Savoury egg crepe (jian bing) large pancake, topped with egg, spring onions, chili sauce, and a crispy cracker to boot. Delicious Green signboards mark the spot of Northwestern Muslim Noodle Stores. Top of the menu will be the region s famous hand-pulled beef noodles, written as (niu rou la mian). Noodle shops in general abound in the city. Easy to spot (there ll be people slurping in the window), and easy to eat well, cheaply. Try the classic (suan cai rou si mian), a soupy noodle dish with pickled vegetables and pork strips. 18
