By tracing and analyzing the role trajectory and action strategy of the state and the growth of civil society under its influence the authors explore the transition of the state since 1978 the change of state invention on society as well as how it affects the society and the relationship among various stakeholders. The study illustrates the growth path of society and how the state - society relations in China greatly differ from their counterpart in the west. Social Capital Government Performance and Urban Residents Trust in Government Hu Rong Hu Kang & Wen Yingying 96 Abstract The decline of citizens trust in government in many countries since the 1960s has become a major concern of academic research. Based on survey data in Xiamen this paper explores urban residents trust in government and further analyses factors influencing their trust. Taking social capital and government performance as major predictors a regression model is set up to explore how components of social capital and indicators of government performance influence government trust. The result shows that both social capital and government performance influence urban residents trust in government positively. Therefore improvement of government performance and construction of social capital will increase urban residents trust in all level of governments greatly. On Civil Religion Ji Zhe 118 Abstract By a strategic return to Rousseau s political philosophy and Durkheim s sociology of religion this article discusses the fundamental theses implied in Robert N. Bellah s reinterpreted notion of civil religion and analyses the nature function and constructive principles of a desirable civil religion. The author argues that civil religion is a non-religious expression of the sacredness of modern society and that it should be based on a rule-of-law state and a civil society. Both the starting point and the aim of such a civil religion consist in defending a society worthy of the name. According to this view republican values must be insisted on and national morality must be compatible with humanity s morality. 244
