8 Find a W ay to S ay "yes" to T hings Eric Schmidt (Eric Emerson Schmidt) who was born in 1955, is a computer engineer, the Chairman of the Board and CEO of GOOGLE. He has a bachelor s degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineers from Princeton University while he has the Computer Science degree and a doctorate at the University of California. Before being a Google CEO, he had served as chairman and chief executive in Novell Company, responsible for strategic planning, management and technology Development Company. He was also a member of the Apple board of directors of the Company, a trustee of the Council of Carnegie Mellon University and Princeton University, and the co- author of the program compiler lex. It s great to be here on campus. It s an honor to have been invited. 11 People bemoan a generation who grew up living life in front of screens, always connected to something or someone. Those people are wrong. The fact that we are all connected now is a blessing, not a curse, and we can solve many problems in the world as a result. Not only is it an advantage you have; it s a responsibility you carry. Today, there are 54 wars and conflicts going on. It s terrible. 1.5 billion people live on less than $1 a day, and hundreds of millions of children will go to bed hungry tonight. It s terrible. Entrepreneurship is the lifeblood of a new economy, and a more prosperous society the engine that keeps communities growing. Everyone all of you can make their mark by creating new standards of brilliance and innovation. And, those standards can spread can scale they can scale in ways once unimaginable. The collective intelligence of our society, our version of the Borg, is really quite different. Think of this as a new society, with shared norms and values, that crosses continents and unites all of us. The empowerment of each of us empowers all of us; and the distinctive feature of your new world is that you can be unique while being completely connected never been possible before a true fulfillment of the American Dream. You see, computers can do amazing things. Those things in your pockets they contain power inside them that your proud parents, your grandparents in the audience never could have possibly imagined. These computers, they have speed. They have memory. They have intricately complicated wiring and unfathomably complex circuitry. But here s one thing they don t have. What they don t have is heart. All of these connections you forge the digital ties that bind our humanity together that s not possible without technology. But it s also not possible without you, without a heart. You have the heart. And the future will not beat without you. Now, don t get me wrong: I believe fully in the power of technology to change the world for the better. And I believe even more fully in the ability of your generation to use that power to great effect to rule technology. 16 Transport The People's Republic of China has experienced a major growth and expansion in recent years. Airports, roads, and railway construction will provide a massive employment boost in China over the next decade. Rail Rail is the major mode of transport in China. In 2011 China's railways carried 2,947 billion tonne-kilometers of freight and billion Passenger-km. Both traffic volumes are the highest in the world. The high volume of traffic that China's railway system carries makes it critical to its economy. Carrying some 24% of the world's railway transport volume on only 6% of the world's railways, the national rail system is modernizing and expanding rapidly and is efficiently within the limits of all available resources. China has the world's third largest rail network, as of 2010 it is 91,000 km (56,545 mi) long, an increase of some 5,000 km (3,107 mi) of track from About 47% of the network is electrified. 16 In 2011 China's railway inventory included 19,431 locomotives owned by the national railway system. The inventory in recent times included some 100 steam locomotives, but the last such locomotive, built in 1999, is now in service as a tourist attraction while the others have been retired from commercial service. The remaining locomotives are either diesel or electric powered. Another 352 locomotives are owned by local railroads and 604 operated by joint-venture railways. National railway freight cars numbered 622,284 and passenger coaches 52,130. Because of its limited capital, overburdened infrastructure, and need to continuously modernize, the national rail system, which is controlled by the Ministry of Railways through a network of regional divisions, operates on an austere budget. Foreign capital investment in the freight sector was allowed beginning in 2003, and international public stock offerings opened in In another move to better capitalize and reform the rail system, the Ministry of Railways established three public shareholder-owned companies in 2003: China Railways Container Transport Company, China Railway Special Cargo Service Company, and China Railways Parcel Express Company. China also has the world's first commercial high-speed maglev (magnetic levitation) train service (the first being opened at Birmingham International Airport, UK in 1984, however, it was not high-speed). The Chinese project was a Sino-German joint venture, 38-km long route between downtown Shanghai and the Pudong airport opened in The project cost US$1.2 billion. In 2004 the first Chinese-made maglev train made its debut in Dalian, a major port city in Northeast China's Liaoning Province. The 10.3 km long train has a top speed of just less than 110 kilometers per hour. Although the cost to build was high at US$6 million per kilometer, China's outlay was still only one-sixth of the world average. Trolleybus Systems 17 As of 2010, trolleybuses provide a portion of the public transit service in 14 Chinese cities. At one time, as many as 27 cities were served by trolleybuses, comprising 28 systems, as Wuhan had two independent trolleybus systems. The Shanghai trolleybus system, which remains in operation, opened in 1914 and is the longest-lived trolleybus system in the world. All other trolleybus systems in China opened after 1950 Metro Currently there are 15 rapid transit systems in mainland China. A further 18 systems are under construction and 20 more metros are planned. With the 4 trillion economic stimulus package all current existing subway systems are undergoing massive expansion, with many new systems being under construction or planned. The Beijing Subway, which opened in 1969, currently has 15 lines, 218 stations and 372 km (231 mi) of subway track and will grow to about 1,000 km (621 mi) by The Tianjin Metro was begun in 1970 as a planned network of km (96 mi) on seven lines; the current existing system contains 2 lines and km (16 mi) of track with 22 stations. Shanghai Metro, which opened in 1995, as of end of 2010 has twelve lines, 233 stations, and 420 km (261 mi) of track in operation, making it the longest metro system in the world. Further expansion plans call for a network of 887 km (551 mi) of track. The Guangzhou Metro, which opened in 1997, has five lines (as of 2010), 144 stations and has 236 km (147 mi) with an additional 400 km (249 mi) planned to be completed by The Shenzhen Metro opened in 2004, initially with two lines, 19 stations, and 21.8 km (14 mi) of track, after 2010 it had over 70 km (43 mi), by June 2011 it has expanded to 177 km (110 mi) of operational metro. 18 Motor Vehicles During the war with Japan, in the 1930s, China built many roads, the most famous of which is the Burma Road that leads southwest from Kunming to the city of Lashio. Since it came into power, the Communist government initiated a large effort into building highways that extend across China and beyond its borders. Today, China is linked by a still evolving network of roads (China National Highways) and expressways (Expressways of China). In the past few years, China has been rapidly developing its highway system. China National Highways stretch to all four corners of mainland China. Expressways reach the same destinations as China National Highways, except for the rugged terrain of Tibet. An expressway link is already at the planning stage. In 2005 China had a total road network of more than 3.3 million km, although approximately 1.47 million km of this network are classified as "village roads". Paved roads totaled 770,265 km (478,620 mi) in 2004; the remainder were gravel, improved earth standard, or merely earth tracks. Highways (totaling 130,000 km) were critical to China's economic growth as it worked to mitigate a poor distribution network and authorities sought to spur economic activity directly. All major cities are expected to be linked with a 108,000 km interprovincial expressway system by The highway and road systems carried nearly 11.6 billion tons of freight and trillion passenger/kilometers in The importance of highways and motor vehicles, which carry 13.5% of cargo and 49.1% of passengers, was growing rapidly in the mid-2000s. Road usage has increased significantly, as automobiles, including privately owned vehicles; rapidly replace bicycles as the popular vehicle of choice in China. Car ownership is still low in comparison to the other members of the BRIC group of countries, being exceeded by Russia and Brazil. Indeed the rate of car ownership in China is only expected to meet the 1960s level of car ownership of some developed countries in In 2002, excluding military and probably internal security vehicles, there were 12 million passenger cars and buses in operation and 8.1 million other vehicles. In 2003 China reported that 23.8 million vehicles were used for business purposes, including 14.8 million passenger vehicles and 8.5 million trucks. The latest statistics from the Beijing Municipal Statistics Bureau show that Beijing had nearly 1.3 million privately owned cars at the end of 2004 or 11 for each 100 Beijing residents. 19 Some 270,000 km (167,770 mi) of rural highways will be built and upgraded in By comparison, 423,000 km (262,840 mi) of countryside highways were built or upgraded in 2007, a record high. According to China's Transport Ministry, as of the end of 2007, percent of villages and towns had already been connected by highways. The 2008 construction plan comprises five north-south highway trunk roads and seven east-west trunk roads and eight inter-provincial roads. Meanwhile, the central and local governments have continued to allocate funds to support the countryside highway build-up and step up construction quality supervision. By the end of 2010, China's highways extend 74,000 Kilometers, with the total length of all public roads reaching 3,984,000 km. Electric Bicycles 19 China is the world's leading producer of electric bicycles. According to the data of the China Bicycle Association, a government-chartered industry group, in 2004 China's manufacturers sold 7.5 million electric bicycles nationwide, which was almost twice 2003 sales; domestic sales reached 10 million in 2005, and 16 to 18 million in By 2007, electric bicycles were thought to make up 10 to 20 percent of all two-wheeled vehicles on the streets of many major cities. A typical unit requires 8 hours to charge the battery, which provides the range of miles (40 50 km), at the speed of around 20 km/h (12 mph). A large number of such vehicles is exported from China as well (3 million units, worth $5.8 billion in 2006 alone). Airlines The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), also called the General Administration of Civil Aviation of China, was established as a government agency in 1949 to operate China's commercial air fleet. In 1988 CAAC's operational fleet was transferred to new, semiautonomous airlines and has served since as a regulatory agency. In 2002 the government merged the nine largest airlines into three regional groups based in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, respectively: Air China, China Eastern Airlines, and China Southern Airlines, which operate most of China's external flights. By 2005 these three had been joined by six other major airlines: Hainan Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, Shandong Airlines, Xiamen Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, and Sichuan Airlines. Together, these nine airlines had a combined fleet of some 860 aircraft, mostly Boeing from the United States and Airbus from France. Additionally, Hong Kong is a major international port serving as an important trade center for China. In 2005 Shanghai Port Management Department reported that its Shanghai port became the world's largest cargo port, processing cargo topping 443 million tons and surpassing Singapore's port. The Port of Shanghai is presently undergoing significant upgrades. Shanghai Model Port Alliance is responsible for many of the upgrades that are expected to make Shanghai's port more automated, minimizing the loss of goods and time while helping Customs collect more accurate tariffs. If the Shanghai project is successful, there is interest in replicating the process in other Chinese ports. Transportation The United States is facilitated by road, air, rail, and water networks. The vast majority of passenger travel occurs by automobile for shorter distances, and airplane or railroad for some people, for longer distances. 21 Traffic congestion, especially at rush hour, is a problem in many of the country's larger cities. A 2009 study found that traffic congestion costs the US almost $87.2 billion. The economic costs of traffic congestion have increased 63% over the past decade, and despite the declining traffic volumes caused by the economic downturn, Americans still waste more than 2.8 billion US gallons (11,000,000 m3) of fuel each year as a result of traffic congestion. Motorists also waste 4.2 billion hours annually, or one full work week per traveler. Types of Rail There are four different types of freight railroads: Class I, regional, local line haul, and switching & terminal. Class I railroads are defined as those with revenue of at least $346.8 million in They comprise just one percent of the number of freight railroads, but account for 67 percent of the industry's mileage, 90 percent of its employees, and 93 percent of its freight revenue. 21 A regional railroad is a line haul railroad with at least 350 miles (560 km) and/or revenue between $40 million and the Class I threshold. There were 33 regional railroads in Most have between 75 and 500 employees. Local line haul railroads operate less than 350 miles (560 km) and earn less than $40 million per year (most earn less than $5 million per year). In 2006, there were 323 local line haul railroads. Switching and terminal (S&T) carriers are railroads that primarily provide switching and/or terminal services, regardless of revenue. They perform pickup and delivery services within a certain area. High-speed Rail The United States has its own definition of high-speed rail. The U.S. government considers high-speed rail service to be rail service of 110 miles per hour (180 km/h) or higher. According to that definition Amtrak's Acela Express which runs on the Northeast Corridor is the only operational high-speed train in the U.S. Unlike Asian and European high-speed rail systems, the Acela shares its tracks with conventional rail and has an average speed of between mph ( km/h) on its routes between Boston and New York, and New York and Washington, D.C., respectively. For brief segments the train travels at up to 150 mph (240 km/h). By comparison, Japanese high-speed trains between Tokyo and Kyoto run at an average speed of 137 mph (220 km/h) and Spanish and Chinese train s average even higher speeds. 22 Despite plans for high speed rail dating back to the High Speed Ground Transportation Act of 1965, in 2012, Amtrak proposed a $151 billion plan to build its first dedicated high speed rail line by Amtrak's proposal called for construction of a high-speed capable rail line that would allow for a speed of 220 mph, faster than any existing line in the world. And cut trips between New York City and Washington, D.C. to 94 minutes. A federal allocation of $8 billion for high-speed rail projects was part of the 2009 stimulus package and prompted U.S. federal and state planners to coordinate the expansion of high-speed services to ten other major rail corridors. However, Republican governors of some of the states where the corridors were to be built cancelled the projects due to their fiscally conservative views on government spending. America's first dedicated high-speed rail infrastructure is likely to be the California High-Speed Rail project between Anaheim and San Francisco via San Jose but will take until 2028 to complete, with its first stage completed in As of March, 2013 construction had yet to begin on the California system. In 2011 The New York Times noted that other countries had built high-speed rail lines quickly and China had built 5,000 miles of dedicated high speed rail lines in only 6 years Cargo 22 Freight transportation is carried by a variety of networks. The largest percentage of US freight is carried by trucks (60%), followed by pipelines (18%), rail (10%), ship (8%), and air (0.01%). Other modes of transportation, such as parcels and intermodal freight accounted for about 3% of the remainder. Air freight is commonly used only for perishables and premium express shipments. The difference in percentage of rail's share by ton-miles and by weight is accounted for by the extreme efficiency of trains. A single railroad locomotive may pull fifty boxcars full of freight while a truck only pulls one. Trucks surpass trains in the weight category due their greater numbers, while trains surpass trucks in the ton-miles category due to the vast distances they travel carrying large amounts of freight. Usually cargo, apart from petroleum and other bulk commodities, is imported in containers through seaports and then distributed by road and rail. The quasi-governmental United States Postal Service has a monopoly on letter delivery (except for express services) but several large private companies such as FedEx and UPS compete in the package and cargo delivery market. Infrastructure and Private Automobile In comparison to some parts of the Western world, the United States relies more heavily on its roads both for commercial and personal transit. 23 built. With the development of the extensive Eisenhower Interstate Highway System in the 1950s, both long-distance trips and daily the commute were mostly by private automobile. This network was designed to exacting federal standards in order to receive federal funding. The system, as of 2004 has a total length of 46,837 miles (75,376 km), making it both the largest controlled-access highway system in the world and the largest public works project in US history. 23 The Interstate system joined an existing National Highway System (a designation created for the legacy highway network in 1995), comprising 160,000 miles (256,000 kilometers) of roadway, a fraction of the total mileage of roads. The Interstate system serves nearly all major U.S. cities, often through the downtown areas (a point which triggered freeway and expressway revolts in the 1960s and 1970s). The distribution of virtually all goods and services involves Interstate highways at some point. Residents of American cities commonly use urban Interstates to travel to their places of work. The vast majority of long-distance travel, whether for vacation or business, is by the national road network; of these trips, about one-third (by the total number of miles driven in the country in 2003) utilizes the Interstate system. In addition to the routes of the Interstate system, there are those of the US Highway system, not to be confused with the above mentioned National Highway System. These networks are further supplemented by State Highways, and the local roads of counties, municipal streets, and federal agencies, such as the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Altogether there are more than 4,209,835 km of paved roads in the U.S. (including 75,040 km of limited-access roads), and 2,255,964 km of unpaved roads. All highways are maintained by state governments, although they receive federal aid to build and maintain freeways signed as part of the 46,000 mile (75,000 km) nationwide Interstate highway network. A large number of expressways are actually government or privately operated toll roads in many East Coast and Midwestern states. West Coast freeways are generally free to users ("freeways", no toll charged per use), although since the 1990s there have been some small experiments with toll roads operated by private companies. After the collapse of the I-35W Mississippi River Bridge in Minnesota in August 2007, the backlog of road and bridge maintenance across the country became a prominent political issue. 24 Air Transportation The United States has advanced air transportation infrastructure which utilizes approximately 5,000 paved runways. In terms of passengers, seventeen of the world's thirty busiest airports in 2004 were in the U.S. including the world's busiest, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. In terms of cargo, in the same year, twelve of the world's thirty busiest airports were in the U.S. including the world's busiest, Memphis International Airport. Private aircraft are also used for medical emergencies, government agencies, large businesses, and individuals, see general aviation. There is no single national flag airline; passenger airlines in the United States have always been privately owned. There are over 200 domestic passenger and cargo airlines and a number of international carriers. The major international carriers of the U.S. are Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, United Airlines and US Airways. Low-cost carrier Southwest Airlines operates no international routes, but has grown its domestic operations to a size comparable to the major international carriers. There is currently no government regulation of ticket pricing, although the federal government retains jurisdiction over aircraft safety, pilot training, and accident investigations (through the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board). The Transportation Security Administration provides security at airports. 24 Water Transportation Water transport is largely used for freight. Fishing and pleasure boats are numerous, and passenger service connects many of the nation's islands and remote coastal areas, crosses lakes, rivers, and harbors, and provides alternative access to Alaska which bypasses Canada. Several major seaports in the United States include New York to the east, Houston and New Orleans on the gulf coast, Los Angeles to the west. The interior of the U.S. also has major shipping channels, via the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Mississippi River system. Freight on the Mississippi River system is carried on barges pushed by approximately 8000 "towboats" and largely consists of bulk goods, such as petrochemicals, grain and cement. Many US ports are served by cruise ships. Popular destinations include the Caribbean, the Mexican Riviera, Hawaii and the Inside Passage to Alaska. Automobile ferries operate in many locations where bridges are impractical and in congested metropolitan areas, including New York City and San Francisco Bay. 36 Volunteer Experience I think it s my honor to be a volunteer to give other people a hand when it s necessary. In return, they will smile sincerely at you. To be honest, I still clearly remember my first experience of being a volunteer for the old people in the old-people s home during my last summer holiday. We, 35 of my classmates, got together at the gate of a nearby park, in the morning. When I arrived there, I was surprised by the things given to the old people. There were 35 bags and all kinds of food (such as an apple, two bananas, and candies of different flavors, etc.) and daily necessities (such as a towel, a vast, etc.) in every bag. What made me more moved was that all these things were prepared by my desk-mate and her family. I had to sigh: how careful they were! At that moment, I completely believed what I had chosen was exactly right. After a short discussion about our task, we spent 25 minutes going to the old people s home with a bag in everyone s hand. On the way, we were all covered with sweat and could not escape the heat of the summer s day, but no one complained about it. Finally, we arrived at the old people s home, which was really simple, crude and just settled in the suburbs without any equipments in good quality. Firstly, we were served in the small canteen, where 32 old people had been waiting for us. We were deeply moved by the warm applause when we walked into the canteen and we could see everyone smiling. They were more exciting after receiving our gifts. Then we started singing songs and telling jokes to make them happy. Actually, they did not really enjoy our performance, but they sincerely gave us warm applause. After that, we were asked to move firewood from the gate of the old people s home to the canteen. To my surprise, both boys and girls were active to do this tiring and dirty task. Finally, we were able to finish it by 13:00p.m. Without any rest, we actively continued to help the old people clean the bedroom. After finishing all the tasks, we were all soaked to the skin and were exhausted, but we were full of satisfaction and happiness. Therefore, we decided to chat, play chess with them and listen to what they want to talk to us. Finally, we got a better understanding about them and made good friends with them. We both are willing to see it once again in the theater. The plot is too complex for me to comment on before to see the film again; To be more specific, it involved four illusionists who build a complicated performance that seemed to involve crimes which the FBI investigates the comical frustration. 45 The movie is worth seeing because of the actors, the audiences, the locations, and the misdirection and plot twists. I am sure that a careful scrutiny will find out some plot holes that will bother some audience, but I believe that an even more careful scrutiny would reveals that some 'holes' are not as deep as they seem at first as well.
