5 LATEST NEWS OF HONG KONG SPACE MUSEUM 5 Hong Kong Space Museum Sai Kung iobservatory Background In 2001, the Quality Education Fund sponsored the Museum to launch an Interactive Astronomical Observatory and Joint School Teacher Training Scheme. This project includes the establishment of an observatory that can be controlled through the Internet and the provision of a training programme for about 300 teachers on astronomical knowledge and use of the observatory for teaching purpose. After operating for a period of time, some observation sessions of such observatory will be opened to the public for astrophotography via the Internet. The Museum built a temporary observatory in Tuen Mun for preliminary testing of equipment in 2003, and the permanent site of the observatory would be inside the Lady MacLehose Holiday Village in Sai Kung. Launched in 2005, the construction works of the observatory, which is officially called the Hong Kong Space Museum Sai Kung iobservatory (the iobservatory), were completed in Facilities The two-storey iobservatory has a site area of about 150m² and a floor area of 270m². On the ground and first floors, there are activity rooms for lecture and demonstration purposes on astronomy. Also located on the first floor, the control room monitors and controls the operation of the whole observatory. The computers inside this room work together but operate different systems including the closed-circuit television security system, weather monitoring system, sky camera as well as controlling and scheduling systems of the telescope. Situated at the top storey are an observatory dome and rooftop. The major function of the observatory dome is to protect the telescope and other equipment installed therein from bad weather. Besides, the temperature inside the dome is slightly higher than that of outdoors, preventing condensation of the evening dew on the surface of the equipment. The dome used by the iobservatory is a 6-metre prodome which has a wide slot opening that can extend past zenith, allowing unblocked observation of the zenith region with telescope. The control room is located between the observatory dome and the first floor so that observers can control the telescope for astrophotography without entering the room. This helps avoid change in room temperature and humidity due to temperature of human body. The dome of the iobservatory protects the telescope and other equipment installed inside from bad weather. Optical system The telescope used by the iobservatory is a traditional Cassegrain reflector, which is combination of a parabolic primary concave mirror and a hyperbolic secondary convex mirror. The merits of this design are long focal length and high amplification factor. 6 6 LATEST NEWS OF HONG KONG SPACE MUSEUM Hong Kong Space Museum Sai Kung iobservatory Weather monitoring system As the operation of the iobservatory is performed by remote control, no staff is stationed at scene to monitor the weather conditions. Therefore the iobservatory is equipped with a weather monitoring system that can automatically determine the suitable time of opening the shutter of the observatory dome for astrophotography. The most important task of this system is to protect the equipment inside the dome by closing the shutter when or even before it rains. Stargazing activities The Museum and the Lady MacLehose Holiday Village will organise a series of stargazing activities at the iobservatory so as to provide opportunities for the public to experience the fun of stargazing and enjoy the beautiful and wonderful night sky. Those Photos taken by the iobservatory who are interested may obtain further information from the Museum and Lady MacLehose Holiday Village in due course. The Moon M13, Globular Cluster in constellation Hercules An automatic weather station uses a series of electronic detectors to measure the temperature, relative humidity, air pressure, wind direction, wind speed, rainfall, intensity of UV and solar radiation.

Therefore the iobservatory is equipped with a weather monitoring system that can automatically determine the suitable time of opening the shutter of the observatory dome for astrophotography.

7 ASTRO e-calendar 2009 Google Google Desktop Gadget Google Calendar Google In late 2007, the "2008 Hong Kong Space Museum Astro e-calendar (Test Version)" was made available to public for trial use. Having collected the comments and suggestions of users for the past year, the Space Museum released the final version of the Astro e-calendar towards the end of The calendar comes in the form of a "Google Desktop Gadget". In addition to the features originally available in the test version, such as calculating the rise, set and transit times of the Sun, Moon and planets as well as displaying their real-time positions in the sky, new features like personal organiser (for registered users of "Google Calendar" only) and automatic regular updates of the Space Museum's latest news are also included. You may visit the Museum's website ( to download the Astro e-calendar (Windows or Mac version). Through the Astro e-calendar (coupled with an appropriate version of the "Google Desktop"), you can easily enjoy the convenience brought by our new "astro-gadget".

Having collected the comments and suggestions of users for the past year, the Space Museum released the final version of the Astro e-calendar towards the end of 2008.

The exhibits, predominantly interactive, enable visitors to learn through a series of entertaining as well as educational experiences. 11 INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF ASTRONOMY The International Year of Astronomy is a year-long celebration of astronomy, taking place in 2009 to coincide with the 400th anniversary of the first recorded astronomical observations with a telescope by Galileo Galilei. The Year was declared by the 62nd General Assembly of the United Nation. A global scheme, laid out by the International Astronomical Union (IAU), has also been endorsed by UNESCO - the UN body responsible for Educational, Scientific and Cultural matters. The International Astronomical Union will be coordinating the International Year of Astronomy in 2009 (IYA2009). The IYA2009 will happen at all levels: international, national, regional and local. Most of the events will be organized locally and will rely on local amateur and professional astronomers. This initiative is an opportunity for the citizens of Earth to gain a deeper insight into astronomy s role in enriching all human cultures. Moreover, it will serve as a platform for informing the public about the latest astronomical discoveries while emphasizing the essential role of astronomy in science education. The success of the IYA2009 in Hong Kong relies on your support and participation. 13 ASTRONOMICAL NOVELTY 13 Hubble Status Report: Directly Observes a Planet Orbiting Another Star (13 November 2008): NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has taken the first visible-light snapshot of a planet circling another star. Estimated to be no more than three times Jupiter's mass, the planet, called Fomalhaut b, orbits the bright southern star Fomalhaut, located 25 light-years away in the constellation Piscis Australis, or the "Southern Fish." Fomalhaut has been a candidate for planet hunting ever since an excess of dust was discovered around the star in the early 1980s by NASA's Infrared Astronomy Satellite, IRAS. In 2004, the coronagraph in the High Resolution Camera on Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys produced the first-ever resolved visible-light image of the region around Fomalhaut. It clearly showed a ring of protoplanetary debris approximately 21.5 billion miles across and having a sharp inner edge. This large debris disk is similar to the Kuiper Belt, which encircles the solar system and contains a range of icy bodies from dust grains to objects the size of dwarf planets, such as Pluto. Hubble astronomer Paul Kalas, of the University of California at Berkeley, and team members proposed in 2005 that the ring was being gravitationally modified by a planet lying between the star and the ring's inner edge. Now, Hubble has actually photographed a point source of light lying 1.8 billion miles inside the ring's inner edge. The results are being reported in the November 14 issue of Science magazine. "Our Hubble observations were incredibly demanding. Fomalhaut b is 1 billion times fainter than the star. We began this program in 2001, and our persistence finally paid off," Kalas says. Observations taken 21 months apart by Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys' coronagraph show that the object is moving along a path around the star, and is therefore gravitationally bound to it. The planet is 17.2 billion kilometers (10.7 billion miles) from the star, or about 10 times the distance of the planet Saturn from our sun. The planet is brighter than expected for an object of three Jupiter masses. One possibility is that it has a Saturn-like ring of ice and dust reflecting starlight. The ring might eventually coalesce to form moons. The ring's estimated size is comparable to the region around Jupiter and its four largest orbiting satellites. Kalas and his team first used Hubble to photograph Fomalhaut in 2004, and made the unexpected discovery of its debris disk, which scatters Fomalhaut's starlight. At the time they noted a few bright sources in the image as planet candidates. A follow-up image in 2006 showed that one of the objects is moving through space with Fomalhaut but changed position relative to the ring since the 2004 exposure. The amount of displacement between the two exposures corresponds to an 872-year-long orbit as calculated from Kepler's laws of planetary motion. Future observations will attempt to see the planet in infrared light and will look for evidence of water vapor clouds in the atmosphere. This would yield clues to the evolution of a comparatively newborn 100-million-year-old planet. Astrometric measurements of the planet's orbit will provide enough precision to yield an accurate mass. NASA's James Webb Space Telescope, scheduled to launch in 2013 will be able to make coronagraphic observations of Fomalhaut in the near-and mid-infrared. Webb will be able to hunt for other planets in the system and probe the region interior to the dust ring for structures such as an inner asteroid belt. Credit: ESA, NASA, and L.
