22 203 20 Literary Interpretation and Cultural Interpretation With A Case Study on Some Poems from The Book of Songs Chang Sen Department of Chinese Language and Literature Peking University Beijing 0087 China Abstract Based on explanations of words and phrases literary interpretation is aimed at interpreting such literary elements as the theme emotion plot image and artistic imagery of a text. By contrast the fundamental purpose of cultural interpretation is pursuing the significance which transcends the literal meaning of a text. In many cases the truth origin and reason of an event in a literary work can only be grasped by cultural interpretation. It is in this sense that literary interpretation must be upgraded to cultural interpretation. Without doubt the continued attrition of culture aggravates the alienation of readers from classical texts. But the complete meaning of every text exists only in the specific relationships between a text and a specific culture. So it s inevitable to make cultural interpretations consciously.
