124 第十三期 Conflicts in the Takeover of the Land in Taiwan after the Sino-Japanese War A Case in the Change of the Japanese Names of the Taiwanese People Abstract By Ho Fung-jiao The takeover of Taiwan by the nationalist government has long been an important issue to historians; however, most studies focus on the takeover of institutions or on the conflicts which happened during the takeover. Little has been done on the impact of the Japanese policies on the takeover, leaving a gap in the study of the period. As the Japanese occupied Taiwan for 50 years, the social changes which occurred over the period could have had great influence on the later takeover. The change of Taiwanese names into Japanese names in this period was an extreme case in the process of Japanization. The Japanization movement was a measure taken by the Japanese to acculturate and reshape the Taiwanese people, with an aim to make the Taiwanese people like the Japanese from inside out. As the nationalist government was also the victim of Japan s invasion, they took an antagonist attitude in dealing with the name-change issue. Once again the Taiwanese people were confronted with the new changes imposed by the new government. The change of names was probably a symbol to show loyalty to any ruling group, but it did bring pains to the people in any case. Before the Sino-Japanese War, although there were conflicts in the change into Japanese names, the property rights of the people were maintained and protected. But after the War, the change-back caused even greater controversies. If the change-back of names did not extend to all the related official documents or contracts of personal properties, the properties might not be returned to the original owners. Instead, they would be treated as Japanese-own properties and thus confiscated by the new government. Such an undertaking was certainly a big blow to the people who felt that they had just plunged into the arms of their home country. Moreover, whether it be the change in the names or the recovery of the original names, it was always done at the mercy of the government. The people s voice was hardly heard. It never occurred to them that the change back would result in the loss of their properties. Even though this issue of name-change concerned only a small number of people, it nevertheless showed that the nationalist government, in setting up new laws or executing their order, did not take people into consideration, causing problems in property rights.
