2 SEPTEMBER 2017 FINE MUSIC FOREWORD 前言 1 Bow Dance - one of the best-loved works heard frequently in the sword-fighting movies in the 60s. 弓舞 喚起不少武俠片情懷的經典 From childhood, I have cultivated a strong interest in the black-and-white old Cantonese movies. My passion for the sword-fighting classics like The Young Swordsman Lung Kim-fei, The Mighty Snow Sword and The Ghost with Six Fingers was particularly deep. Having frequently seen this genre of movie, its background music also automatically left an imprint in my mind. Those Chinese folk tunes accompanied me while I grew up. Yet, I never knew their titles and origins. Over the years, one by one, many of these tunes were unveiled. First, I am grateful to my brother. Across the street where we lived was a department store that sold Chinese products. He bought some cassette tapes there. I vividly remember one of which was entitled Bow Dance a tune that reminded me of a female protagonist practising swordplay in the back yard. Bow Dance is the famous excerpt from The Dagger Society, a dance drama. Its overture was frequently used when swordsmen gathered for a big meeting. When the leading characters walked down the hill, having finished learning the fighting skills from their sifu (master), the beautiful excerpt Pea Blossom was frequently heard. My effort to match the song titles with the music continued on. Soon, I discovered that a crowd fighting scene went with The General s Command or Fishermen s Song of the East China Sea; Guilin s Scenery, and Singing the Night among Fishing Boats were heard in romantic scenes; a street scene matched perfectly with the Jiangna sizhu Merry Song, and when a magic potion or herb was discovered in the mountain, Triumphal Song of the Reservoir with its delicate sound of the yunluo gongs was the best piece to go with it. The 50s and 60s saw the blooming of Chinese folk music. For this, we are indebted to the many composers, performers, and those who picked music for movies. Yet, if the recording industry in Hong Kong and China was not as blossoming, Chinese folk music wouldn t have spread so fast and wide. In September and October, we will rewind the clock half a century ago to listen to some of the gems of Chinese music recordings. This month, we have invited Chief Librarian of the Hong Kong Public Libraries Jim Chang, and academics Yu Siu-wah and Victor Cheng to sit and talk about the Chinese music and recording industry in those years in the series of four Musical Exchange (in Cantonese) programmes. Next month in Music from China (in Cantonese), Wong Kin-ting will bring you selections from his collection of LP recordings of Chinese folk music. Finally, let me say a few words about Radio 4 s new programme timetable. As announced by RTHK on 11 August, from 4 September 2017, we will relay BBC World Service daily from 11pm to 7am*. This reallocation of airtime is an outcome of the government s decision to terminate Hong Kong s Digital Audio Broadcasting services. A number of RTHK channels have played a part in absorbing and integrating the previous DAB services into their operations. With the new programming, listeners can access BBC World Service on FM. At the same time, some adjustments to Radio 4 s timetable are inevitable. Under the new arrangement, Nocturne will be replaced by the new programme Presenters Choice, broadcast from 10pm to 11pm from Monday to Friday. There is a special theme for each night: historical recordings, early music, keyboard music, chamber music, and original soundtrack. Jazzing Up will be moved to a new slot, on Saturday from 10pm to 11pm, taking the place of the previous Chamber Fragrance. On Sunday, Radio 4 s programming will end with Wendy Ng s Sunday Divertimento. With the change of the timetable, Radio 4 s commitment to bringing you fine music remains unchanged! He produced a large number of successful recordings, and also led 67 tours over 40 years with his Quartet. In addition to his performing career, Levin was also a prominent teacher. He was described as more or less a guru for all the young string quartets in Europe by his wife, who also served as his agent. Levin was born in 1924 to a Jewish family in Berlin. His parents were amateur musicians who made him learn piano and violin at the age of five. Later, His family suffered from persecution under the Nazi regime, so they emigrated to Tel Aviv in He fulfilled his dream to study in the United States in 1946 when he was admitted to The Juilliard School. He majored as a violin soloist in Juilliard at first, but soon switched to string quartet, and founded the LaSalle Quartet while at school. They gained their reputation with their interpretations of Beethoven and Debussy along with their recordings of Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern, which led to premieres of works by Ligeti and Penderecki to name just a few of the contemporary composers they performed. 7 8 SEPTEMBER 2017 FINE MUSIC COVER STORY 封面故事 Yu Siu-wah 余少華 During the 1960s, when television had yet to be popular in Hong Kong, our music exposure and experience mainly depended upon hearing. To the younger generation of those days, records and China were equally new and they were received with curiosity. We were not given to understand the nuanced differences between the Chinese music of Hong Kong, which was basically Cantonese-oriented, and that from the Mainland (the PRC). But the soundscape then was broad and accommodating, with multifarious kinds of Chinese music heard in our daily life. I have strong memory of the broadcasting history of the Yellow River Chorus (some translated it as Yellow River Cantata) in Hong Kong. It was once censored in the radio. My first encounter with, or discovery of, the original recording of it under the China Record label in the Record Library of RTHK was in the early 1980s, when I worked for Radio 4. It was almost like a relic unearthed. However, what was more eye-catching was the radio bilingual s seal stamped on the record: Not Suitable for Broadcasting (!) What could be more educational in history and cultural politics in real-life Hong Kong? Records under the China Record label did not have prominent presence in the market in those days. It was through Art- Tune Records Company Hong Kong records that the music, history, culture, and political realities of China and Hong Kong were presented to us. Such a record label had been serving as a bridge between Hong Kong and the PRC musically and culturally for decades. In the course of revisiting the interesting relationship of China and Art-Tune records, examples similar to the case of Yellow River Chorus abound. It is my pleasure to chat with Jim Chang, who has done extensive studies on Art-Tune records, and Victor Cheng, who is an expert in the industry of Chinese music records, on this repertoire of Hong Kong-produced Chinese music recordings by Art-Tune. Those were the days when we were lost in the imagination of China! 六十年代的香港, 電視還未普及, 我們的音樂體驗以 聽 為主 當年電台播放的中國音樂類別遠比今日多元 年輕一代, 唱片與中國, 既新鮮又陌生 我們分不得清粵劇與南音 國樂與民樂, 但各種各樣的中國音樂就是我們日常的聲音環境 (soundscape) 我們並不了解以粵樂為主的香港, 中國音樂 跟中國大陸的有何分別 ; 僅記得冼星海的 黃河大合唱 (1939) 在電台上曾 被消失 過 到了八十年代初在香港電台工作, 我首次見到該曲的原版中國唱片時, 恍如隔世! 然而, 更令我觸目的是唱片上的電台蓋章, 以中英文寫道 : 不適合廣播, 方明白其背後的歷史 政治原因 其時來自中國大陸的 中國唱片 在市面是不多見的 藝聲唱片 就是我們認識 中國 的一個窗口, 是一道牽引我們進入中國歷史 文化 政治現實和音樂想像的橋樑 重探 藝聲 與 中國 之間的微妙關係, 與上述 黃河 相類的例子多不勝數 與對 香港藝聲唱片 素有研究的鄭學仁和中國音樂唱片專家鄭偉滔一起想當年, 閒聊這些 香港出版 的中國音樂唱片, 憶及少年時代的種種, 重聞藝聲的錄音, 不覺又走進了當年想像中的 中國音樂!

8 SEPTEMBER 2017 FINE MUSIC COVER STORY 封面故事 9 Victor Cheng 鄭偉滔 Translated by Wong Kin-ting 英文翻譯 : 塵紓 On the advice of Sit Kok-sin, renowned Cantonese Opera actor, Chin Kwong-yan of Hong Kong Lee Chuen Company (transliteration) accepted Shanghai Great China Record Company s invitation to be its South China and overseas agent and, to this end, set up in 1926 New Moon Gramophone Company, Hong Kong s first record company with Chinese funds. In view of New Moon Gramophone Company s modern design and lucrative business in the community, British, American, and German businessmen in Shanghai came one after another to Hong Kong for business development. However, Hong Kong s record business plummeted due to the civil war. As foreign businesses rushed to pull out after the war, Zhongguo Gramophone Record Factory from New China took up what those foreign businesses had left behind in Hong Kong. On account of the drastic political changes in early 1950s, the British-Hong Kong Government set up an Immigration Control Point at Lo Wu and, as a result of which, Mainland film workers had difficulty in moving to Hong Kong. Confronted with an acute shortage of film workers, the local film industry moved to a period in which a film was made within seven days, as the term 7-day Completion suggested. In this connection, instead of original music, Canned Music was used for incidental music. On another front, for the purpose of political publicity, the New Chinese Administration took the Art-Tune Records Company in Hong Kong as one of its windows to regions that formal foreign relations were yet to be established, with records from the Mainland being re-packaged for local consumption and music learning. In September s Musical Exchange, Jim Chang, Yu Siu-wah, and I will share with you the history of the recording industry during the period. 9 10 SEPTEMBER 2017 FINE MUSIC COVER STORY 封面故事 Jim Chang 鄭學仁 香港藝聲唱片公司的存在, 永遠好像一個謎 沒有多少人確實知道它的來歷, 但不少愛樂人確實被它的內容深深吸引, 許多人曾意會到這個品牌的內容, 跟中國唱片原來出版的並無兩樣, 總說不清是什麼原因就愛聽這個本地品牌 1956 年 9 月, 藝聲在港成立, 成為二十年代香港新月唱片之後, 另一個早期在港註冊出版的本地唱片品牌 然而, 這個以敦煌飛天為標誌的新品牌, 本來就是新中國唱片工業連接港 澳和其他海外地區的一個重要出口, 而新中國的音樂 戲曲 曲藝等經過重新編輯和包裝後, 也陸續找到了海外的聽眾 這除了在保存當代新中國音樂作品和對外文化宣傳等各方面有不可磨滅的深層意義外, 也為毗鄰中國的地區帶來一定程度的社會及文化影響 作為藝聲唱片的植根地, 香港又可說是近水樓台 藝聲唱片的出現, 為香港引入了不少嶄新 高質素而又令人耳目一新的音樂品種的錄音, 也正好為香港戰後日趨蓬勃的音樂活動, 提供了充足的養份 藝聲唱片日漸普及, 糅合了香港既有的地道粵樂文化所產生的有機催化作用, 成為了本地音樂傳播 音樂教育和欣賞等各方面的新教材 香港的電影工業在戰後重新起步, 建國後大批不同背景的電影人南來, 無疑為當時開始發展的電影工業, 提供了不少人力資源和有利條件, 從而開創了五十和六十年代香港電影百花齊放的一段黃金時期, 而藝聲音樂適時出現, 卻與電影工業碰出了一段歷史的巧合 張冠李戴 的藝聲現象, 改造了不少香港人的認知經驗, 在電影畫面主導觀眾聽覺回憶的前提下, 確立了傳播學上所謂的 模式化 效果, 為香港 創製 了一種新的音樂品種, 成為香港人集體回憶中的 武俠中樂 藝聲從五十至七十年代, 在香港度過了它的黃金歲月, 直至八十年代後期開始漸漸淡出唱片行業 香港中央圖書館與中國唱片上海分公司, 在中央圖書館十樓藝術資源中心舉辦 藝聲緣 : 香港 上海雙城唱片回憶 展覽, 凝聚香港 上海兩個城市各自保存的歷史文檔和唱片藏品, 重塑五十多年來中國唱片和藝聲唱片的一段緣, 為港 滬兩地的城市文化生活, 添上一點繽紛記憶 是次展覽舉行至 11 月 30 日 With the Dunhuang Flying Apsara as registered logo, the Art-Tune Records Company was established in Hong Kong in 1956 with its business solely based on re-mastering or re-producing the recordings of the China Record Corporation for sale in Hong Kong and export to the overseas Chinese, aiming to promote the arts and culture of the new China. The novel and esoteric music presented by the Art-Tune significantly transformed the local music culture in Hong Kong by bringing enrichment to its music activities, music education, and appreciation. The so called Art-Tune phenomena has now become a collective memory of local people, in particular when the music in early Cantonese martial art films is re-visited. More Art-Tune and other Chinese music records will be showcased in Musical Exchange (in Cantonese) every Monday at 8pm. The programme will echo the Central Library s The Art-Tune Encounter: A Gramophone Remembrance of Hong Kong and Shanghai exhibition, which will be held from now to 30 November at the Arts Resource Centre, 10/F, Hong Kong Central Library. 11 SUNDAY OPERA Sundays 2:00pm Lo King-man In September, Sunday Opera presents one of the finest examples of Orientalism in western musical theatre, a Baroque masterpiece based on a romantic episode in the life of a great Roman Emperor, a spectacular French grand opera depicting events culminating in a bloody massacre in Paris, and a double-bill of operatic gems based on Oscar Wilde s tales about the trauma of self-discovery and revelation. 3 September: Puccini s Madama Butterfly Renata Tebaldi, soprano, as Madame Butterfly Carlo Bergonzi, tenor Louis Melancon/Metropolitan Opera Exoticism was an important ingredient in the recipes of success for many opera composers throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Many of the best works produced in this period were set to libretti with Africa, the Middle East, India, and other remote countries as background. By the beginning of the 20th century, interest was extended to China and Japan. Of the latter, Sullivan s Mikado, Mascagni s Iris, and Puccini s Madama Butterfly are outstanding examples. Giacomo Puccini ( ) cherished Madama Butterfly as the favourite among his operas, describing it as his most deeply felt and imaginative work. It is a highly intimate psychological drama, full of carefully observed motivations and actions, and the poetry of small, delicate things. The quality of the music is supreme on the technical level, especially in the exquisite melody, harmony, vocal, and orchestral textures. It contains what are perhaps the most lyrical and passionate love duet, the most beautiful and popular aria for soprano, and the most poignant and moving death scene among all Puccini operas. The recording to be presented on this occasion offers a mellifluous interpretation of the title role by soprano Renata Tebaldi. She is partnered by stylish tenor Carlo Bergonzi as Pinkerton, resonant baritone Enzo Sordello as Sharpless, and warm mezzo-soprano Fiorenza Cossotto as Suzuki. The Chorus and Orchestra of the Santa Cecilia Academy of Rome perform under the direction of Tullio Serafin. 10 September: Handel s Giulio Cesare in Egitto On the second Sunday of the month, we shall travel back in history to the Baroque era, to be entertained by a performance of the original Italian version of Giulio Cesare in Egitto (Julius Caesar in Egypt), music by George Frideric Handel ( ), set to a libretto by Nicola Francesco Haym, first performed at the King s Theatre in London in February This work is a typical example of numerous 18th-century compositions in the Italian opera seria (serious opera) style. It won immediate success and popularity for a number of years after the first performance, but which, for a period of about two hundred years from 1750 to 1950, went out of the public s favour. After the decline of the castrati performers in mid-19th century, opera companies found it difficult to mount productions of this type of works due to Nikolaus Walter Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, baritone Tatiana Troyanos, mezzo-soprano the lack of suitable singers with the technique, style, and discipline necessary for a proper performance. However, with the emergence of great interpreters in recent decades such as sopranos Beverly Sills and Joan Sutherland, coinciding with the surge of concurrent interest in early and Baroque music performed in authentic style, opere serie such as Giulio Cesare and other works by Handel and his contemporaries have seen vigorous and successful revivals.

The plot of this opera evolves around Caesar s love affair with Cleopatra who desires to use the Roman General s power to depose her brother Tolomeo in order to become the sole ruler of Egypt. Tolomeo s attempt to assassinate Caesar fails and is himself slain by Sesto, the latter in revenge for his father Pompeo s murder. Caesar conquers Egypt and makes Cleopatra its Queen. Singing the title role is the great German baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau; Cleopatra is interpreted by American-Greek mezzo-soprano Tatiana Troyanos; and Sesto is portrayed by the fine lyric tenor voice of Peter Schreier. The Bach-Chorus and Bach-Orchestra of Munich provide excellent support. Karl Richter is the conductor. 17 September: Meyerbeer s Les Huguenots Giacomo Meyerbeer ( ) was born in Berlin to a very rich Jewish family. A child prodigy on the piano, he performed in public from the age of 7 and soon began to nurture a passion to compose. Inspired by the success of Gioachino Rossini, he decided to devote his career to writing for the theatre, achieving international fame with his opera Il Crociato in Egitto (The Crusade in Egypt), which received its premiere in Venice in He then settled in Paris where his next opera, Robert le Diable (Robert the Devil), made him a superstar overnight in From then until his death, Meyerbeer remained a dominating figure in the realm of opera and the most frequently performed composer at the world s leading opera houses in the 19th century. Enriqueta Tarrés, soprano Nicolai Gedda, tenor Louis Melancon/Metropolitan Opera Les Huguenots, set to a text by the prolific librettist Eugene Scribe, was given its first performance at the Paris Opera in It was an immediate success and soon established itself as one of the most popular and spectacular examples of the French grand opera, a genre chiefly created by Meyerbeer with the fusion of powerful and colourful music, virtuoso vocal display, melodramatic plot, dazzling ballet, magnificent pageantry, sumptuous costumes and scenery, and stunning stage effects. With such a rich formula, Meyerbeer consolidated his artistic triumph and legendary status in his lifetime. The opera tells of the hatred between the Catholics and the Protestants, known as the Huguenots in 16th-century France, culminating in the historical St. Bartholomew s Day Massacre of 1572, in which thousands of Huguenots were slaughtered. The plot includes a moving love story between Valentine, a Catholic noble lady, and Raoul, a Protestant gentleman, who both fall victims of the bloodshed. The extremely demanding principal roles are taken by Spanish soprano Enriqueta Tarrés as Valentine, Swedish tenor Nicolai Gedda as Raoul, American coloratura soprano Rita Shane as Queen Marguerite de Valois, and Puerto Rican bass-baritone Justino Díaz as the Huguenot soldier Marcel. They are given strong artistic support by the Radio Austria Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Ernst Märzendorfer.

13 Arts Happenings 藝壇快訊 September: Zeminsky s A Florentine Tragedy, The Birthday of the Infanta This interesting double-bill of one-act operas was created on the basis of two short literary works by Oscar Wilde. The German libretto of A Florentine Tragedy was written by Max Meyerfeld; and that of The Birthday of the Infanta by Adolf Dresen. They were set to music by the important Austrian composer and teacher Alexander Zemlinsky ( ) whose creative talent was harshly suppressed by the Nazi regime because of his Jewish origin. A Florentine Tragedy, premiered in Stuttgart in January in 1917, is a psychological thriller in which a middle-class merchant, Simone, confronts his wife s lover who is the son of the Duke of Florence. He finally kills the younger man. There is an extraordinary surprise ending to this story. With mezzo-soprano Doris Soffel as Bianca, tenor Kenneth Riegel as Guido, and bass Guilermo Sarabia as Simone The Birthday of the Infanta (alternatively titled The Dwarf), premiered in Cologne in May 1922 under the baton of Otto Klemperer, is a tragic fairy tale in which the protagonist is made to choose a bride for himself. Not realising that this is a part of a game and a practical joke, the dwarf chooses the young Princess Clara, the Infanta. When he sees for the first time in his life how ugly he looks in the mirror, he breaks down in utter despair. With soprano Inga Nielsen as the Infanta, tenor Kenneth Riegel as the Dwarf, and soprano Béatrice Haldas as Ghita. Zemlinsky s music bridges the height of Romanticism and modern expressionism, but he retains tonality and melody, though treating these elements in a free and personal way with exceptional technical dexterity. The two operas were produced and recorded by Radio Symphony Orchestra of Berlin under conductor Gerd Albrecht. Renowned Chinese Composer Zhu Jianer Dies at 95 中國作曲家朱踐耳離世 Charles Chik 戚家榮 Prominent Chinese composer Zhu Jianer died on 15 August in Shanghai. He was 95. Zhu s wife will follow his last will and testament by not holding a memorial service and by donating his mortal remains for medical research. Formerly known as Zhu Rongshi, Zhu Jianer was born in 1922 in Tianjin, and later moved to Shanghai with his family. He grew interested in music and taught himself piano and other instruments while in high school. Suffering from an illness after graduating, he needed to stay in bed all day with a radio as his only companion. Listening to classical music non-stop not only built up his strong foundation in music but also enlightened him to start his music career. He even changed his name to pay tribute to his role model Nie Er. In 1955, Zhu Jianer was chosen by the Shanghai Film Studio to pursue studies in the Soviet Union at the Composition Department of the Moscow Conservatory. He returned to China after graduation and worked in the Shanghai Opera as a composer. In addition to composing revolution pieces such as Days of Emancipation, he is well-known for writing 10 symphonies and a sinfonietta over the next 14 years, composing the first symphony at the age of 63. In 1991, he won the Prize for Outstanding Contribution to Shanghai Literature and Art Award. As a tribute to Zhu Jianer, Live on 4 will bring you a special programme with his music on Saturday 23 September at 8pm. 16 SEPTEMBER 2017 FINE MUSIC COLUMNS 專欄 21 Charles Chik 戚家榮 逢星期日早上 10 時正 口琴隊經常採用的半音階口琴 和來 Super 64 Grassinger 孩提時代, 我們大概只會從父母口中得知較為普及的西方古典樂器 有沒有興趣參加鋼琴班? 我打算為孩子報名參加下星期開始的暑期小提琴班 凡此種種都是小孩耳熟能詳的說話 近年, 可能家長對巴松管和低音大提琴等一些體積較大的樂器更感興趣, 甚至讓孩子學習以加入管弦樂團 至於口琴, 在芸芸樂器中彷彿只是一件 卑微 的小玩意 體型細小, 只能演奏簡單的樂曲 究竟口琴是不是只能當玩具 飾物 鑰匙扣, 而難登大雅之堂? 從笙演變出來的樂器 相傳十八世紀, 一位歐洲人把中國古老樂器笙帶到西方, 促使他們以笙的發聲原理製作新的樂器 來自德國的青年保殊曼 (Christian Friedrich Ludwig Buschmann) 便參考笙製造出口琴的前身 當時口琴還未盛行, 貴族女子只會把口琴當作飾物, 紳士則會把口琴放置在手杖的頂端作為裝飾 提到讓口琴真正廣泛流行的人物, 不得不提德國的鐘錶匠和來 (Matthias Hohner) 1857 年, 和來在德國特勞辛根開設了一間口琴工廠, 廣泛的生產令口琴迅速打入歐洲和美國市場 和來口琴廠努力不懈地改良口琴, 令口琴發展漸趨成熟 大眾樂器之王 該廠在 1885 年製造了全世界第一部半音階口琴 半音階口琴利用按鍵靈活地演奏半音, 音色飽滿多變, 善於演奏高難度的古典音樂 多年來, 眾多口琴巨匠誕生, 如艾迪拿 (Larry Adler) 萊利(Tommy Reilly) 告樊(Sigmund Groven) 邦非利奧 (Robert Bonfiglio) 等, 而經典口琴樂曲亦觸目皆是 口琴已不再是二百多年前的飾物, 而是 入得廚房, 出得廳堂 的 大眾樂器之王, 半音階口琴亦逐漸踏入正統樂器之列 相信每位演奏半音階口琴的樂手, 都曾聽過身邊的朋 友說 : 原來口琴也能演奏這麼複雜的樂曲! 沒錯, 口琴的可塑性遠遠比起你想像中還要大 口琴大師艾迪拿出神入化的演繹, 令這件小巧玲瓏的樂器登上大雅之堂 要讓口琴樂曲家傳戶曉, 需要更多知音認識這門藝術 誠邀你收聽本月一連四集 口出琴言, 讓我以不同角度為你解構此 麻雀雖小, 五臟俱全 的樂器, 帶你進入口琴音樂的國度 The harmonica is commonly portrayed as a compact instrument, almost, or one may say, a toy. 17 SEPTEMBER 2017 FINE MUSIC COLUMNS 專欄 23 Wong Kin-ting 塵紓 逢星期五下午 3 時正 這首千古傳頌的唐詩, 是柳宗元 ( 年 ) 貶官後失意之作 以柳詩至全唐詩而言, 江雪絕對是佳構 短短一首五言絕詩亦即寥寥二十個字, 整幅的獨釣圖畫, 就已經清晰呈現眼前 此詩用字淺白, 但用筆極深, 首兩句以至首三句的構圖, 全屬鋪墊, 目的是深刻勾畫獨釣景象 首兩句屬於 二三 句式, 即是說, 第一句是先後由一個二字詞和三字詞組成 千山 固然是個誇張詞語, 用意是說明眼前盡是山, 但在連綿的山脈裏, 居然 鳥飛絕, 連半隻鳥也沒有 第二句的 萬徑 也是誇張詞, 說明眼前雖有萬千路徑, 但居然 人蹤滅, 連半個人也沒有 柳詩寒江確精煉 按照常理, 即便是隆冬, 千山豈會無鳥, 萬徑怎會無人? 不過, 無論千山是否確實無鳥, 萬徑是否真的無人, 在詩人心目中, 眼前既無眾生, 亦無動態, 一切鳥和人, 盡皆摒諸心外, 排於目外, 而達至 無 的境界, 從而加強營造第三句 孤舟 的孤象 此外, 孤舟之上是一位簑笠翁, 而 簑笠 是穿在身外和戴在頭上, 用以擋雨遮雪的工具 整句 孤舟蓑笠翁 是要描述獨釣的時節, 並且道明獨釣的氣候, 藉此引出第四句 經過先前三句由遠至近的鋪墊, 詩人終於在第四句向讀者說出, 眼前的簑笠翁, 原來是在寒江獨釣 獨釣寒江雪 其實是個倒裝句 寒江上的雪, 又怎可以釣得到呢? 正確的意思是簑笠翁在寒江的薄冰上獨釣 整首詩用了 絕 滅 孤 獨 四字以及 千山 萬徑 與 孤舟 的鮮明對比, 反覆強調寒天獨釣的孤寂感覺 寥寥四句, 短短二十字, 用筆之精煉, 實在讚嘆不已 後人所作難續貂 民國十年 (1921 年 ) 出版的 晚笑堂竹莊畫傳 中的柳宗元像 江雪 自唐以來, 已是歷代吟誦的佳作 然而, 最可笑者, 是後人試圖踵事增華, 在此詩之外, 屢添對應之作 可惜盡屬東施效顰, 歷來未見佳句 試以清朝王士禎七言絕詩題 秋江獨釣圖 為例, 詩云 : 一簑一笠一扁舟, 一丈絲綸一寸鈎 一曲高歌一樽酒, 一人獨釣一江秋 全詩合共二十八個字, 居然用上九個 一 字, 不單產生不了孤單之感, 反而覺得纍贅重複, 加上意象繁多, 毫無留白, 益覺矯情庸俗, 風景盡煞 賢如王士禎, 竟也徒添狗尾續貂的劣評 在音樂方面, 現代古琴家李祥霆有感於 江雪 的獨釣意境, 即興創作一首同以 江雪 為題的簫曲 獨釣寒江雪, 並收錄於二十一世紀初發行 唐人詩意 的唱片裏 這張唱片以琴曲 簫曲或琴簫合奏曲, 對前人律絕, 聊作和應 他並為此撰文暢論古琴即興創作藝術, 然後刊載於唱片冊子中 數九寒天雪花飄 李祥霆雖是琴家, 但據他自述, 早自中學時代, 便學會吹簫 樂迷盡可從這首簫曲, 品評他營造江雪意境的能力 除了此曲, 大家亦會在本月 樂在神州 的 數九寒天雪花飄 節目裡, 聽到其他以雪為題的樂曲 另外, 大家還可以透過四個分別為 更能消幾番風雨 黑雨烏風裂地雷 日出江花紅勝火 和 明月曾照彩雲歸 的主題, 全情體會風雷雨雪 紅日彩雲的美景 無須呼風喚雨, 無須追雲逐日, 也可盡得自然景致, 不亦妙哉? 35 48 SEPTEMBER 2017 FINE MUSIC COLUMNS 專欄 My Music Matters 我的音樂生活 Bill Robertson 羅威廉中文翻譯 : 李顯瑜 Hi I m Bill Robertson and I come from Paisley, near Glasgow, in Scotland and I ve been in Hong Kong now for almost ten years. I very much enjoy the lifestyle here and after my recent retirement from Diocesan Boys School, I ve decided to stay on in Hong Kong, living in a small village in the New Territories with my dogs and cats. Music has always played an important part in my life. As a semi-professional singer in my younger days, I won a number of awards and travelled to Canada and the USA with the Scottish Fiddle Orchestra. As a devotee of church music, I sang as a lay clerk in Paisley Abbey and St. Mary s Cathedral in Edinburgh. As a producer of amateur music clubs for a number of years, I directed many performances across Scotland, mainly in Glasgow and the surrounding area. These operas and musicals ranged from Die Fledermaus and La belle Hélène to Carousel and Fiddler on the Roof. So far I haven t done any productions in Hong Kong but, now that I am retired, who knows? My teaching career covers some forty years both in Scotland and in Hong Kong. I have always been interested in classical music and in opera, in particular. My radio career started with some experiences in hospital radio in Scotland and being involved in recording Reflections, Thought for the Week, and Minutes that Matter over the past ten years in Hong Kong. This prompted me to approach RTHK Radio 4 and I ve been freelancing at concert broadcasts in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre and the City Hall now for the past two years. In Scotland, I was an Army Cadet Chaplain and I worked in the Scottish Prison Service, also as a Chaplain. I seem to have passed my love of music to my sons, one of whom is a professional singer, currently establishing himself in the professional scene in Scotland, after gaining his degree in music. It s a challenging experience to do concert broadcasting, especially at live events. I really enjoy the adrenalin rush and the people I work with have been so supportive, especially in my earlier broadcasts. I look forward to doing many more for RTHK Radio 4.
