1 CHRIST THE REDEEMER CATHOLIC CHURCH The parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus teaches us that other persons are a gift. A right relationship with people consists in gratefully recognizing their value. Even the poor person at the door of the rich is not a nuisance, but a summons to conversion and to change. The parable first invites us to open the doors of our heart to others because each person is a gift, whether it be our neighbour or an anonymous pauper. Lent is a favourable season for opening the doors to all those in need and recognizing in them the face of Christ. Pope Francis, Lent 2017 First Sunday of lent, March 5, 2017 Members of the Service Commission will once again host four Soup Suppers during Lent. They will be Thursday, March 9, 16, 23 and 30. Join us for soup, bread and fellowship from 6:00-7:00 pm. We invite a representative from four organizations that we tithe to, and ask them to give a brief update of their program. A free will offering will be donated to them at the end of the evening. Prayer service for healing Join us at a Prayer Service for Healing on Friday, March 10 at 7:00 pm in the Chapel. Come if you would like to pray for a loved one, yourself, or if you would like to support others who are in need. Whether you have the gift of great faith, or your faith has been challenged by illness, loss, or painful life transitions, you ll have the opportunity to lift up your hearts to God within a safe and supportive circle. We ll complete the evening by sharing refreshments and conversation in the Bethany Room. Tender Loving Cookers wanted The Tender Loving Cooker Ministry provides meals to parishioners who are experiencing a temporary crisis. We currently have several parishioners recovering from an illness or surgery. We use an on line volunteer program called Takethemameal. This on line website allows you to easily access a schedule of meals where you pick a day that suits your schedule. The link will also include directions and any dietary or allergy restrictions. If you would like to help provide an occasional meal, please or call Lisa or Karen in the parish office. Ash Wednesday s Gospel (Matthew 6:1-6; 16-18) is a continuation of Mathew s Sermon on the Mount, which began with the Beatitudes: Blessed are the poor in Spirit (Matt. 5:3) Bishop Robert Barron suggests that the Beatitudes are an antidote to our human addictions to money, sex and power. Anthony de Mello defines an attachment as anything in this world that we convince ourselves we cannot live without. To live in the infinite power of God is to realize that we need nothing other, that we crave nothing more, that we can let go of everything else. For Augustine, all of us have been wired for God ( you have made us for yourself ) and therefore we are satisfied with nothing less than God ( our hearts are restless until they rest in you ). When we attach our wills to something less than God, we automatically become addicted, and this is the case precisely because the lack of satisfaction that we necessarily experience leads to an obsessive return, a compulsive desire for more and more. If that amount of money didn t quell my deepest desire, I must need more money; if that sexual encounter didn t satisfy the longing of my heart, I must need another more thrilling one, etc., etc. The initial thrill the rush of money, sex, or power leads to an obsession that finally takes away our freedom and our self-possession. Jesus describes the overcoming of this addiction with the evocative word blessed. In Luke s version of the beatitudes, we are told how blessed are you who are poor (Luke 6:20). Let me propose the following reading: How lucky you are if you are not addicted to material things. One of the classic substitutes for God is material wealth, the accumulating of things. Like any drug, houses, cars, and property provide a rush when they first enter the system, but then in time, the thrill that they provide wears off, and more of the drug must be acquired. Luke s beatitudes continue with How blessed are you who weep now (Luke 6:21). Might we translate it as follows: How lucky you are if you are not addicted to good feelings. We live in a culture that puts a premium on good feelings and attempts to deny or medicate depression. But feeling happy is just as much a false god as wealth or power. We feel the rush of pleasure and then, when the thrill fades, we try at all costs to reproduce it at a higher pitch. Luke s Jesus continues: Happy are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man (Luke 6:22). Again, some light might be shed if we translate it in terms of detachment: How lucky you are if you are not addicted to the approval of others. Status, attention, fame are among the most powerful and insinuating of the false gods who lure us Jesus told his disciples: Woe to you when all speak well of you (Luke 6:26), and Winston Churchill said, Never trust a man who has no enemies. The 3-fold Lenten practice of Almsgiving, Prayer and Fasting in Matthew s Gospel are a counter force to these compulsions. First, practice a liberating generosity toward the poor to dethrone greed and topple the regime of money. Second, practice a kind of prayer that is a defiant act of resistance against the prideful pursuit of power, pursuing forgiveness and reconciliation, not retaliation and revenge. Third, practice fasting to revolt against the dominating impulses of physical gratification so that the sex drive and other physical appetites will not become our slave drivers. And all of these are practiced covertly, in secret, so they aren t corrupted into an external show as the hypocrites do. Fr. Joe

We also have a group that meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month from 10:30-12:30pm (Amy ). All Moms are very welcome to attend. Lent On-Line There are soooo many wonderful resources available on-line to assist in our desire to reflect on what is essential in our lives and draw nearer to God during this sacred season of Lent. I would like to highlight one such resource that is an adapted version of the tried and true Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. This online resource offers a rich prayer experience for each day of the 40 days ahead with many links to further explore if you have the time or the inclination. It's called An Ignatian Prayer Adventure and is offered free by Loyola Press at this link: The eight-week schedule makes it perfectly timed as a Lent and Easter retreat, but the adventure can be started at any time, on your schedule. Join in a flexible experience of daily prayer and reflection. Choose to commit to a regular period of prayer each day, or start with only one day a week. Use as much or as little of the material as helps you. The weeks are ordered as such: Week 1: Love, Freedom, and Purpose Week 2: Finding God in All Things Week 3: Something s Broken Week 4: Knowing Jesus Wishing you peace and clarity during this holy season... 4 P a g e 4 Dignity of the Poor Members of Christ the Redeemer continue to give generously to the many different drives we do throughout the year which benefit numerous non profit organizations. We would like to remind you of a few things to remember when donating: - Please only donate gently used clothing. If you would not wear the donated item, please don't assume those with less resources would want to wear it. The same goes with donating toys, household items and appliances. If the item is broken, missing parts, dirty, please re-cycle or discard. - When donating any food items, never donate anything, including non perishable items past the sell by or expiration date. Even canned goods lose flavor or become inedible past their expiration date. More importantly, the Department of Health does not allow any food item, past its expiration date, to be given away or used to prepare food. This includes, condiments, spices, baked goods, just to name a few. Please contact Karen or Lisa in the parish office if you ever need resources for donations. We often will post donation needs and sites in the bulletin, and can always help with suggestions. Thank you for your continued support of all the outreach projects our parish participates in. Help with easter flowers Spring flowers and Easter lilies will be potted for Easter Masses on Thursday, April 11 at 10am. The three top finishers received a $10 gift card to Chili s Restaurant. Thank you to Chili s on Baldwin for donating the gift cards. First Place went to Karla Gonzalez Lopez, second place to Jim Maxfield and third place to Bob Tatus. Thank you to Jessica Hallmark and Carrie Peters for organizing the event. Thank you to Brian and Sue Enjaian for helping at the event. Grieving with Great Hope is a 5 week grief support series that offers a prayerful, practical and personal approach for anyone who is mourning the loss of a loved one. If you have lost a spouse, a child (including pregnancy loss), a grandchild, parent, another family member or a friend, you are encouraged to attend. Presenters will be Fr. Joe Dailey, Fr. Mike Verschaeve as well as John and Sandy O Shaughnessy from Good Mourning Ministry, a local Catholic bereavement organization. This is a joint effort with our parish and St. Joseph parish with help from Modetz Funeral Home. This year the sessions will be held at Christ the Redeemer on April 20, 27, May 4, 11 and 18 from 7-9pm. Registration is $20. Scholarships are available. See the flyer in the vestibule for registration details. Lansing update U.S. Bishops Respond to Memoranda on Immigration Enforcement and Border Security Earlier this week, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security issued two memoranda to direct how President Trump's executive orders on border and interior immigration enforcement would be implemented. In response, the chair of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on Migration, Bishop Joe Vasquez of Austin, issued a statement urging the administration to reconsider its approach: "We recognize the importance of ensuring public safety and would welcome reasonable and necessary steps to do that. However, the two memoranda issued by Secretary Kelly on February 20 th contain a number of provisions that, if implemented as written, will harm public safety rather than enhance it. Moreover, taken in their entirety, the policies contained in these memoranda will needlessly separate families, upend peaceful communities, endanger the lives and safety of the most vulnerable among us, breakdown the trust that currently exists between many police departments and immigrant communities, and sow great fear in those communities."

We ask that you pick up a paper Easter Egg, with a list of suggested items, buy a basket, grass and other items and return the filled basket wrapped in cellophane by Sunday, April 2. Adopt a Family This year we will again be coordinating the Adopt-A-Family Program for Easter. This includes buying a Easter meal for a family and providing some staple foods and/or paper products. We ask that you buy a Meijer gift care for the meat. An Easter basket for the family is optional. All items need to be delivered to church the weekend of April 8/9. Just as in our own life, temptation also comes to Jesus when he is tired and vulnerable. First, the devil taunts Jesus to turn stones into bread. Jesus tells the devil that the word of God is more important than bread. Then, the devil tempts Jesus to prove that God watches out for him by jumping from the top of the temple. Jesus tells the devil not to test God. Finally, the devil tries to tempt Jesus with all the power and glory in the world. Jesus says that God alone is the one whom we adore. After three tries, the devil strikes out. It is comforting to know that Jesus knows firsthand what it is like to be tempted. Jesus faced tough choices like we do, and he made the right ones. Jesus resisted temptation with spiritual strength and the Scriptures. The Scriptures also can be our ally in the face of temptation. As Lent begins, let us take time to reflect on our sin and weakness and to turn to the lord, seeking forgiveness. As Catholics, we fast during the Lenten season to help us focus on what we really crave union with God. You ve all probably heard the expression that all humans have a God shaped hole in our hearts leaving us yearning for the Father. I believe this to be true. We all crave relationship with God; we just don t always recognize it for what it is. What do you crave? Our culture creates a lot of hunger. Sometimes it might seem like we can t live without that special show, or those shoes, or that latte. Our consumer culture has us convinced that we will die if our earthly cravings aren t met. I ve even talked to teens who refuse to participate in fasting because they don t think they can live through it. When we do this we are limiting ourselves and our God. Fasting can be a really good thing for people. When we give up something we crave, we realize that we can live without it and it just might leave more time, space, or focus for God. Why not try a fast this Lent? Give up something you ll die without and see how your relationship with God changes. When the cravings hit, think instead about God and what he promises. Then, ask yourself, What do I really crave? I think you may be pleasantly surprised at the results. Lisa Andridge Coffee house Calling all high school students! Please join us for our weekly youth meetings we call Coffee House. We meet every Tuesday evening from 7-9 pm in the Disciples room. It s a chance to gather with your friends, discuss topics that matter to teens today, enjoy music, food, movies, conversations and lots of fun! No registration is required and you re invited to come when your schedule allows. This relaxed setting will give you the opportunity to explore your faith and learn how to apply it to your life today. You are always welcome to bring your friends, too. Agape Mass and Bash Saturday, March 11 Calling all high school seniors! Have you wondered what youth group will look like after high school? Join us at St. Mary of the Hills on Saturday, March 11 at 7:30 pm as we celebrate Mass together and socialize after with members of our local Agape group. It s a fabulous way to find out what college youth ministry looks like. Stay tuned for more details as they become available! Spring Break Mission and Summer Mission 2017 For the past 17 years or so, the teens of our parish have spent Spring Break and one week in the summer volunteering with the Motor City Blight Busters in the Old Redford district of Detroit. We begin our day with a social gathering and prayer at CTR and then car pool to the city to be Christ s hands and feet in action. After a day filled with new adventures, we return home dirty, sweaty and tired and ready to dive into another day. Our days include almost anything; painting murals, cleaning trash, clearing home sites, spreading mulch and gravel and even weeding and sweeping the streets. There is no job too big or too small for a heart that walks with Jesus. If you have a teen in grades 9-12 and would like more information, please contact Lisa Andridge in the Youth Ministry Office.

These children have been removed from their homes because of family abuse and are now living in orphanages. Questions, contact Sharon DeMeyere at Collection for the church in central And eastern Europe The weekend of March 4/5, we will begin the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. This collection supports the Church in over 20 countries, many of which are still struggling to recover in the aftermath of Soviet rule. Funds from this collection support pastoral care, catechesis, building renovations, and seminary formation. Your support restores the Church and builds the future in this region. Please prayerfully consider how you can support the collection. Please use the envelopes provided in the vestibule. Additionally, our tithing committee will donate to this collection This is a ministry that has very caring, compassionate individuals that are members of Christ the Redeemer that have been trained to give quality Christian care to people experiencing a crisis in their life. If a person is facing a challenge such as divorce, grief, job loss, illness, loneliness, or any other of life s challenges a Stephen Ministry can be there during this time. Stephen Ministers meet for about one hour each week offering care for as long as it is needed. The Inner Geography of Prayer Jesuit priest, professor, scholar, scientist and spiritual leader will invite us to deepen our relationship with God through an exploration of our inner workings and deepest desires with the help of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. March 23rd: Ann Dillon The Examen: Our short & mighty prayer Ann Dillon holds degrees in Education and Religious Studies. She co-leads the Seminar on Ignatian Spirituality and the Internship in Spiritual Companionship at Manresa Jesuit Retreat House. She will introduce the Examen, a short but mighty daily prayer to help us "notice what we notice about our day and discern what God may be inviting us to in what we notice. March 30th: Fr. Tom Florek, S.J. Mercy in Action Jesuit priest, professor, scholar, and pastoral leader will wrap up our four-week series by bringing before us all that we have discerned through our prayers, both individual and collective, and will help shape our innermost desires and dreams into some grace-filled work of mercy in our family, church, community, world.
