WELCOME to the 42nd season of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra my fourth as Music Director. I hope this brochure will inspire you to come and hear your orchestra as we perform a huge variety of wonderful music for you. I like to think of our time together as a journey shared in sound. In the past year, we continued the journey in many exciting new directions. For the orchestra, our major tour to Europe, where we played in some of the greatest concert halls, was a particular highlight. Hong Kong can be proud of the huge success its orchestra achieved on the international stage. We intend to be representing Hong Kong overseas again soon. A great journey we began last season will continue in January Wagner s Ring Cycle. We will perform the second chapter of this work Die Walküre. I cannot wait to bring our all-star cast to the stage of the Cultural Centre for its first Hong Kong performances. I also am delighted to bring a complete cycle of Beethoven s symphonies in this season, as well as to conduct Swire s Symphony Under the Stars. And I am delighted that Yu Long accepted my invitation to become our Principal Guest Conductor for three years, beginning this season. There is so much else to discover. I am thrilled to join the HK Phil as Principal Guest Conductor from this season. Conducting this orchestra is a special joy, and I hope that in the coming seasons we will make some beautiful music together. In my concerts this year I will be collaborating with my old friends Maxim Vengerov and Jian Wang, as well as performing two of my favourite concert works Strauss mighty Thus Spake Zarathustra, and Tchaikovsky s sixth symphony, the Pathétique. To hear the HK Phil these days is to hear an orchestra of the highest international quality. Most concerts were sold out, there were standing ovations, and the reviews were universally positive. The concert in Vienna s Musikverein was filmed for future broadcast on TV. With a history stretching back to 1895, when it was formed as the Sino-British Orchestra, the HK Phil was re-named in 1957 and became fully professional in Thanks to significant subsidy from the Hong Kong Government and long-term funding from Principal Patron Swire, the Hong Kong Jockey Club and other supporters, the HK Phil now boasts a full-time annual schedule of classical music concerts, pops concerts, an extensive education programme, and collaborations for staged opera with Opera Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Arts Festival. Conductors and soloists who have recently performed with the orchestra include Vladimir Ashkenazy, Ning Feng, Matthias Goerne, Lang Lang, Yu Long, Yundi Li, the late Lorin Maazel, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Yuja Wang and Edo de Waart, the HK Phil s previous Music Director. 52
