In order to prevent any possible secondary hazards derived from the earthquake as well as to propose structural retrofitting and rebuilding methods, Southwest Jiaotong invited representatives from eight Japanese Academies (Japan Society of Civil Engineers, Architectural Japan, Japan Association for Earthquake, The Japanese Geotechnical Society, Seismological Society of Japan, City Planning Japan, The Association of Japanese Geographers, and The Institute for Social Safety Science) to visit the university. After an extensive investigation into affected regions by the Chinese and Japanese experts, the Sino-Japanese Post-Earthquake Repair and Rebuilding Techniques Symposium on Wenchuan Earthquake was held in Southwest Jiaotong, Chengdu, China on 31 st May Several lectures on the 5.12 Earthquake were directed to over 2,000 engineers and faculties. In addition, specialists from Southwest Jiaotong, the European Union and the United States conducted a thorough investigation into the disaster zone and held extensive discussions into the topic, providing strong technical support in the repair and rebuilding of the affected regions. On the 1st anniversary of Wenchuan Earthquake, the International Conference on Earthquake --the 1st Anniversary of Wenchuan Earthquake is organized jointly by the Commission of Seismology and Earthquake of

2 Seismology Society of China, Consortium by eight Japanese and Science Academics, Southwest Jiaotong, Sichuan Society of Architects and Civil Engineers, and Sichuan Key Laboratory of Aseismic &. This conference aims to summarize and further discuss the restoration and rebuilding of infrastructures into the zone in order to better serve the affected regions, in remembrance of those who lost their lives during the disaster. Conference Themes: 1. Analysis of Wenchuan Earthquake Disaster; 2. Structural Seismology and Post-Earthquake Rebuilding 3. Post-earthquake Structural Evaluation and Retrofitting 4.
