Dalian Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Dalian 116021, China) ABSTRACT: Objective To evaluate the regulation effects of powdered Lepidium meyenii (Maca) on immune function in mice. Methods Forty mice were used to conduct antibody-producing cell of spleen, total hemolytic complement assay (HC 50 assay), clearance of carbon particles, and chicken red blood cell phagocytic rate and phagocytic index assay. The 40 mice were randomly divided into 4 groups (n=10): 0, 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 g/(kg bw) powdered Maca were orally administered once daily for 30 d. Results In comparison with the control group, 0.3 g/(kg bw) and 0.9 g/(kg bw) powdered Maca significantly increased the ability of mice B cells secreting antibodies (P<0.05), 0.9 g/(kg bw) powdered Maca significantly increased HC 50 value (P<0.01), 0.6g/(kg bw) and 0.9 g/(kg bw) powdered Maca significantly increased the ability of carbon particles clearance by mice macrophages (P<0.05), and 0.9 g/(kg bw) powdered Maca significantly enhanced the phagocytic rate and phagocytic index of chicken red blood cells in mouse peritoneal macrophages (P<0.05). Conclusion Powdered Maca can enhance the function of humoral immune and monocyte macrophage in mice.
