2 The agreement of the Canada Quebec Arts Festival partnerships was supported by the Prime Minister, mister Philippe Couillard, during his mission to China in October The China-Canada Culture Exchange Center (CCCEC), founder of the Festival, is proud of its strategic cooperation with the National Center for the Performing Arts, China International Venue Ally (CIVA), Shanghai Highnoon Culture & Arts Centre, Shanghai JZ Music Festival, Hangzhou Theater, Guangzhou Jazz Festival and Shanghai International Arts Festival to promote and to recognize the extraordinary creativity of canadian artists and cultural wealth. The first edition of the Festival spreads its multiple activities in 15 cities of China, with more than 50 performances and concerts, 4 projects in visual and multimedia arts, a series of masterclass and the special events "Jazz - Made in Canada" and "Canada Arts in Shanghai". Thirty two Canadian artists will perform in front of spectators approximately. To cross the borders and to promote cooperation between the cultural institutions of China and Canada, to favor exchanges between the artists, to forge links between the arts and the population, to promote the cultural diversity, such are the objects of Festival. Moreover, year 2015 marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Canada. It is thus advisable to take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to revitalize the cultural exchanges by the foundation of an annual festival dedicated to the artists of Quebec, reknown world wide for their creativity and their peculiarity ensuing from the marriage of the French-speaking and English-speaking cultures in this Canadian province. Dépasser les frontières et promouvoir la coopération entre les institutions culturelles de la Chine et le Canada, favoriser les échanges entre les artistes, tisser des liens entre les arts et la population, promovoir la diversité culturelle, tels sont les objets du Festival. A souligner que l'an 2015 marque le 45e anniversaire de l'établissement des relations diplomatiques entre la Chine et le Canada. Il convient donc de profiter de cette occasion unique pour dynamiser les échanges culturels par la fondation d'un festival annuel dédié aux artistes canadiens, renommés mondialement pour leur créativité et leur singularité découlant du mariage des cultures francophone et anglophone dans cette province canadienne. Un tel événement ennoblit la tradition des échanges culturels Canada-Chine car il contribue au partage de l'esprit d'innovation à travers les arts, il promouvoit la compréhension mutuelle et l'amitié entre les deux peuples, de même qu'il construit une plate-forme durable et continue pour des échanges culturels bilatéraux. La naissance du Festival est rendue possible grâce à la participation dynamique des artistes canadiens, à une coopération étroite entre les institutions culturelles canadiennes et chinoises, au dévouement des 2 équipes du Centre d Échange Culturel Chine-Canada, au soutien du Gouvernement du Canada et du Québec, de l Ambassade du Canada en Chine, du Consulat général du Canada à Shanghai et à Guangzhou, des bureaux du gouvernement du Québec à Beijing et Shanghai. I see you have developed an ambitious programme that is bringing the Festival to 15 cities across China over a two-week period. As you know, this year marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Canada and China. Cultural exchanges-in the performing arts, visual arts, literature, and film-are a key and growing part of our bilateral ties. Also, throughout , our two countries are celebrating a special year of cultural exchange. Over the years, music and arts have played an important role in promoting friendly exchanges between our two peoples. Canadian artists, musicians, performers and writers have developed many creative partnerships with their Chinese counterparts, which, in turn, have enriched the cultures of both nations. Indeed, the Government of Canada is proud to support Canadian arts and culture in China, and encourage fruitful collaboration and exchange. For the program here in Guangzhou, thanks to the cooperation between Guangzhou Xinghai Concert Hall and the China-Canada Culture Exchange Centre, Canada is the only foreign country to be featured throughout the festival with the Made in Canada program on October 26th and 27th at the Guangzhou Jazz Festival. Two world class Canadian jazz musicians, Yannick Rieu and Yves Leveille will be leading their ensemble to bring first rate performances sure to entertain audiences of all language and cultural backgrounds. Music is often said to be a universal language that unites all people, and I believe that this occasion will inspire more meaningful connections between the people and cultures of Canada and China. This year marks the 45th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between Canada and China as well as the year of Canada-China Cultural and People to People Exchange, a testament to an increasingly vibrant and dynamic relationship between the two countries. The Canadian Consulate in Guangzhou is also expanding its presence in South China, including by moving to a new, larger Chancery early next year. We look forward to enhanced promotion of bilateral ties in many fields, including the performing arts in South China. 8 Yannick Rieu was the 18th recipient of the Oscar Peterson Award, originally created during the 10th edition of Montreal International Jazz Festival, to celebrate the quality of his art and his outstanding contribution to the development of Canadian jazz. As early as 1988, Down Beat, the American bible of jazz, ranked him amongst the 20 most talented saxophonists in the world alongside Branford Marsalis, Joe Lovano and Courtney Pine. Since then, Yannick Rieu has played throughout the world and collects praise and awards, both for his recordings and his performances on stage.he received three Félix from ADISQ for the best jazz album of the year category for "What Is the Colour of Love", "Little Zab", and "I Is Memory". The project entitled "Yannick Rieu Quartet When Jazz Meets China" presents a hybrid music, rooted in jazz tradition while using sounds from Chinese original music. This idea emerged from previous tours in China (more than ten since 2006) which gave Yannick Rieu the opportunity to deepen his knowledge and interest for Chinese music. These trips served to collect a large number of records from various parts of China and become familiar with their singular and inspiring musical language. It is obvious that the instruments with very singular stamps enrich Yannick Rieu s creativity as well as the specific use of breath, ornamentation and vision of the traditional music role (representation and illustration of the nature-rain, sun, wind, fog, etc. via the melodies) help to create an original sound, a particular color to the group. 9 Highly respected for his compositions and arrangements, as well as for his numerous collaborations with some of today's most important jazzmen, pianist Yves Léveillé is on a never-ending quest for beauty within the jazz idiom seeking to articulate a musical language that is in turn lyrical, cerebral and sophisticated. Montreal-based Yves Léveillé created his ensemble dedicated to the interpretation of his original compositions in the 1990's. Since then, he has recorded eight albums. Available on the Effendi label and ATMA-Classique, they have been very highly appreciated by critics and audiences alike. Léveillé performs in Canada, as well as in Europe, the United States and now in China. He was awarded some of the most prestigious Canadian jazz awards and nominations for Best Albums and Concerts of the year and he also received major grants leading to a residencies in New York and at the famous Banff Centre. 11 Winner of the 2012 Révélation Jazz Radio-Canada prize, this Canadian trumpeter and composer of Polish origins is turning heads. Versatile and adventurous, he s a player who likes to shape up his sound with different outfits: with the ODD LOT ensemble, the Montreal musician blends Eastern European music, jazz and electronica, while in the Litania Projekt, he marries neoclassical with Northern European jazz. 12 For 16 years, the world-trad group Les Tireux d Roches (in English the rock throwers ) has been playing traditional music inspired by the Québec repertoire with an innovative and creative touch. These storytellers, singers and musicians have developed a unique repertoire of traditional tales and songs that takes their audiences on a fantastic musical voyage to an imaginary New-World-of-old. Having performed more than 450 concerts in the past 16 years across Canada and Europe, they ve developed an uncanny knack for delighting and electrifying crowds. Hailing from a region overflowing with creativity, this colourful crew immersed themselves in Québec tradition while keeping open to the new sounds and influences drawn from the contemporary world milieu. Their unique and off-the-wall folk/trad style combines both traditional and unconventional instrumentation into an expressive arsenal of sound. Live on stage, they dish out effervescent music that just makes you want to dance. They are on the road a lot, most recently appearing at the Sound of the Xity (China), in New York and in various locations across Quebec. Coming up, they ll be in France and Germany. 13 The Montreal-based sextet Sagapool will perform songs from their new self-titled album released last March and recently rewarded with a Felixat ADISQ. Expect a display of virtuosity and creativity, between Nu-Jazz and world music, with a cinematographic feel. As the accordionist, the violinist and clarinettist jammed together to The Godfather theme in the halls of the conservatory, they knew what they had to do: Start a klezmer band. But what happened was a completely different story. Sagapool went from Balkan and Gypsy-inflected impromptu shows on the streets of Old Montreal to crafting original instrumentals as a six-piece band one so in synch that the guitarist jumps up to join the bassist for a thumping four-handed riff. Now the inventive ensemble turns inward, adding a Northern note to their swirling romps on Sagapool. Nonetheless, Sagapool can t help but add an ample dose of the group s quirky humour.this mix of good-natured shenanigans and Northern thoughtfulness won Sagapool a Canadian Folk Music Award (Best Instrumental Album, 2008) and gained them showcases at WOMEX (2010). 14 Michel Beaucage has earned a name for his unique creative expression. His works both refer to the visible world and reflect suggestive perceptions. The interplays of abstraction and representation evoke nature, artistic movements and oriental stylization. Lines and shapes arising from spontaneous gestural strokes, superimposed transparent planes and harmony of colour are all characteristic of his paintings, rendered primarily in acrylic on canvas and rice paper. His talent is also expressed in drawing, engraving, sculpture and bas relief murals. Through his singular use of acrylic and rice paper, he infuses his work with fragility and transparency reminiscent of crystallinity, glass and ceramic glaze. He incorporates collage (paper, jute, fabric and fragments of drawings and engravings) to add contour and texture, and has developed an original technique using rice paper as a medium.
