4 PART A : GENERAL INFORMATION APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION TO FULL-TIME PROGRAMMES SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION 1. The period of application for admission in the academic year 2019/20 starts on 10 September 2018 and ends on 29 October Completed application forms should be submitted by mail or in person to the Registry, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, 1 Gloucester Road, Wanchai, Hong Kong. For application by post, the postmark date on the envelope will be regarded as the date of application. 3. Each applicant should submit only one application. Subsequent application(s) from the same applicant (according to the date of receiving application) will not be processed and the application fee will not be refunded. APPLICATION FEE 4. A non-refundable fee of HK$300 will be charged for each application. For local applicants, the application fee must be paid before submission of the application form. This may be done at any branch office of the Bank of China (account no ). 5. For non-local applicants, a bank draft of HK$300 should be made payable to 'The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts'. Personal cheques and cash will not be accepted. DOCUMENTS TO BE SUBMITTED 6. Applicants are required to submit the application fee receipt, or bank draft together with their completed application forms. Application forms that are not accompanied by the application fee receipt will not be processed. 7. Applicants are required to submit photocopies of application forms and supporting documents as follows: First Choice only: First and Second Choice for the same school: First and Second Choice for two different schools: Original & One copy of the application form; and Two copies of supporting documents Original & One copy of the application form; and Two copies of supporting documents Original & Three copies of the application form; and Four copies of supporting documents 8. If selected for interview, applicants may be required to produce original documents. Applicants with 2019 HKDSE or public examination results that are pending are required to submit photocopies of school results obtained within one year from the date of application and/or results of any other public examination most recently taken. 9. Applicants should provide a formal certified translation in English if their academic and professional qualifications are not in Chinese or English. 10. Applicants may be required at a later stage to produce their Hong Kong Identity Card or other identification documents upon request by the Academy in order to verify the personal data given in their applications. 11. If an applicant makes false statement(s) or omits significant information in the application form, his/her application may be disqualified, or the Academy may withdraw or amend any offers, or terminate his/her registration/studies after admission. Any fees paid will not be refunded. POINTS TO NOTE BEFORE APPLYING BASIS OF ASSESSMENT 12. Admission is based on academic qualifications, talents, attainments, and relevant training in the chosen arts discipline. Applicants may be required to attend auditions, interviews and/or tests. The Academy will not provide individual written assessments or enter into any correspondence with unsuccessful applicants. 13. The admission criteria for different programmes vary. Applicants must therefore ensure that they satisfy or will be able to satisfy the specified entry requirements of the programmes for which they wish to apply before completing the application form. Please refer to the 2019/20 Academy Prospectus and Annex of this Guide for entry requirements of different programmes. REQUEST FOR CHANGES 14. Requests for changes in personal particulars, such as names, addresses and telephone numbers should be made to the Registry of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts immediately. 15. Requests for changes in choices of School, Programme, Major Study Area or Specialisation should be submitted to the Registry in writing no later than 29 October Changes in Personal Statement in the application form will not be entertained. -2-

5 NON-LOCAL APPLICANTS 17. Non-local students refer to persons entering Hong Kong for the purpose of education with a student visa/ entry permit issued by the Director of Immigration. 18. If an applicant is unable to attend an audition in Hong Kong, a DVD, video (any format), or USB recording with the audition pieces should be submitted together with the application form, with a certified statement that it is the applicant s own performance. Please refer to the Audition and Selection Requirements specified by the School concerned in the 2019/20 Prospectus and in Annex of this Guide. 19. Unless specified, audio visual recordings and portfolios submitted will not be returned. The Academy will also not be responsible for any possible loss or damage to the portfolios sent. POINTS TO NOTE AFTER SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION APPLICATION ACKNOWLEDGEMENT 20. The Academy will, by , acknowledge receipt of an application within four weeks to the address provided by the applicants. Applicants are required to retain the application acknowledgement and to quote the application number for further enquiries. 21. Applicants whose application forms have not been completed properly will be invited to complete the application in person. Auditions/interViews/tests 22. Applicants may be invited to attend auditions, interviews, and/or tests during the period of November 2018 to March It is advisable for applicants to be available during this period of time. ANNOUNCEMENT OF APPLICATION RESULT 23. Successful applicants will normally be notified no later than 31 July OTHER INFORMATION FEES AND CHARGES 24. The tuition fees are payable in two instalments. The first instalment must be paid before registration. Other fees and charges will be announced to successful applicants before registration. The tuition fees for all levels of study for 2019/20 are subjected to the announcement by the HKSAR Government. The Academy reserves the right to alter or not to offer any or parts of the academic programmes without prior notice. In the case of cancellation, all tuition fees paid by applicants will be refunded. LATE APPLICATIONS 26. Applications for admission to The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts will in general NOT be considered after the stated closing date for application. 8 2. PROGRAMMES APPLIED FOR 1. Please ensure that you have satisfied the specified entry requirements of the programme(s) you wish to apply for. The School codes, Programme codes and the codes of the study areas offered by the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts are listed in Part C (Section of Major Study Area) on pages 8-10 of this Guide. More details on the programmes can be found in the Academy 2019/20 Undergraduate and Post-secondary programme Prospectus. 2. You may enter a maximum of two choices of programmes. The choices represent the order of your preferences and your qualifications. It is therefore important that you prioritise the choices of programme according to your academic and career aspirations. 3. If you are applying for admission to the first year of study, you should enter '1' in the box of 'YEAR OF STUDY'. If you are applying for direct entry to year 2 of any programmes on the basis of advanced standing, you should enter '2' in the box of 'YEAR OF STUDY' for the programme and attach a copy of your transcripts and recommendation from relevant professional bodies. 4. 13 ANNEX PORTFOLIO, AUDITION AND SELECTION REQUIREMENTS SCHOOL OF CHINESE OPERA Selection Requirements Applicants should have talents and a strong interest in one of the two specialized streams of study provided in the programme (ie, performance and music). Apart from the above requirement, applicants for admission to Music stream will be expected to possess sufficient basic skills in playing Cantonese Opera percussion or one melodic instrument (eg, er-hu, violin or ruan, etc). Applicants for admission to Music stream are expected to have solid knowledge of Cantonese Opera music theory, including Gongche notation, Banqiang structure and Cantonese speech and rhyming. Preliminary Selection Selection is based upon applicants results in the HKDSE and other public examinations, previous relevant training or experience in their chosen stream of study available in the programmes, a written statement of personal goals, and their written portfolio, as applicable. Students may submit up to two reference letters with their application, as deemed appropriate. Only those applicants who pass the preliminary selection will be invited to attend an audition or interview, as appropriate. Audition / Interview Applicants who pass the first screening will be invited to attend an audition. Admission will be based primarily on personal audition, previous experience in performing arts, portfolio reviews and /or practical tests. Applicants who are invited to attend an audition will be required to perform the following: For admission to Performance Stream - Sight singing of musical scales - Basic movements - Cantonese Opera stage movements either as directed by the panel and / or of the applicant s choice - Cantonese Opera singing as directed by the panel and / or of the applicant s choice with his/her recorded music - Two pieces of monologue in Cantonese Opera or drama, one at the applicant s choice, one as directed by the panel - Interview based on the applicant s expectations of and commitment to Cantonese Opera studies In addition to the above preliminary requirements, applicants for admission to the Advanced Diploma programme will be asked to demonstrate their ability and potential in Cantonese Opera performance which is judged by the panel as comparable to the standard expected of a graduate of the Academy s Diploma programme in a relevant stream. For admission to Music Stream - Demonstrate the ability to play Cantonese Opera percussion or one melodic instrument of applicant s choice (eg, erhu, violin or ruan, etc) - Play a Cantonese Opera percussion or one melodic instrument as directed by the panel - Sight singing of musical scales and counting of the beat - Demonstrate the knowledge of music theory - Interview based on the applicant s expectations of and commitment to Cantonese Opera studies In addition to the above preliminary requirements, applicants for admission to the Bachelor Degree / Advanced Diploma programme are also required to sit a written test on Cantonese Opera music theory at the Diploma level. -11-

14 SCHOOL OF DANCE Besides meeting the Academy pre-requisites for entry into their chosen programme, applicants will be asked to attend an audition and interview to ascertain their suitability for entry into the School. 15 SCHOOL OF Drama Potential and Enthusiasm for the theatre is looked for in the applicants. In addition, applicants should be able to speak fluent Cantonese and to read Chinese. Having satisfied the general admission requirements which includes a satisfactory level of accomplishment in English language, applicants will be invited to attend a series of auditions and interviews, the results of which will determine the applicants suitability for admission. Owing to the large number of applicants, it is not possible for the Academy to provide any individual comments to applicants whether they are shortlisted or not. Applicants shall note the School will not return submitted materials such as portfolios or DVDs. 16 SCHOOL OF FILM AND TELEVISION Applicants should submit a total no more than 3 supportive pieces of work. Quality of submitted work is more important than quantity. Please select your best and most appropriate work. At least one of the submitted works must be a screen work. At least means that 1 of your submitted works must be a screen work, but you can submit 2 or 3 examples of your screen work if you wish. If you have only 1 example of your screen work, then you must submit that work plus 2 other pieces of supporting work. Every applicant MUST submit at least 1 short screen work. For short screen work, the maximum length of each item is 5 minutes. Applicants must clearly indicate which role(s) they performed on each submitted work. Short screen work can be a short non-fiction story created on video in any form such as animation, montage of still images, music video etc., or a short factual video, for example, a documentary, personal diary or opinion, music or instructive video etc. Other types of acceptable supportive work are: Visual art work, Still photographic work, Audio-only work such as music or sound stories, Written work, Handmade pieces of work using any medium. For written work, applicants may submit creative, factual or instructional writing of any type. Each item should not exceed 4 pages or 1300 words. For still photographic work, 3 separate photographs will be treated as 1 item. For screen or audio work, applicants may upload to and then submit playback links for popular online sites such as Google, YouTube and Vimeo, etc. (applicants must provide passwords for links where necessary). Work submitted on disc, please label each disc/s clearly in English and Chinese. Please note: Applicants are required to submit supportive portfolio work or no interview will be arranged. If an applicant applies additionally to another School or Program, please submit another set of portfolio work to that School or Program as specified by that School or Program. All work presented must be the original creative work of the applicant. Submission of portfolios after the deadline for application will not be accepted. All submitted work should be put in an envelope with applicant s name and application number printed on top. Oversize artwork should only be presented at interview. While utmost care will be taken for all the portfolios submitted, the Academy will bear no responsibility for any loss or damage. 17 SCHOOL OF MUSIC The School of Music will consider each applicant s musical training and performance standard as indicated in his/her application form, and will invite selected candidates to attend a preliminary audition in their chosen Major Study. Shortlisted candidates from the preliminary audition will be asked to attend a final audition as well as tests in music theory and aural perception. Applicants for BMus (Hons) Degree programme will also be interviewed on their commitment to studying performance or composition and their reasons for choosing the Academy. The audition panel will look for technical control, musical understanding and expressiveness, general musicianship, creativity and potential for further development. The number of places that can be offered for certain major studies is limited, and may vary from year to year. For BMus (Hons) Degree applicants, it may be necessary to re-direct the applicants to another study programme if their performance standard falls below the entry requirements of the chosen programme of study. Entrance Tests in Aural Perception and Music Theory For applicants of the BMus (Hons) Degree, Advanced Diploma and Diploma in Music Foundations, candidates shortlisted for the final audition are required to attend entrance tests in aural perception and music theory. The test in aural perception includes questions in intervallic, chordal, harmonic, melodic and rhythmic recognition and dictation, as well as questions regarding the stylistic and formal characteristics of listening excerpts. The test in music theory includes questions in harmonization and score analysis. Sample papers of the tests have been uploaded to the website of the School of Music. Please note: Portfolios and recordings will not be returned to applicants. CHINESE MUSIC Preliminary audition Applicants should prepare a programme of contrasting works of their own choice.
