B ased on the field investigation and available data from several drills, silos and stulm s imp lem ented on different parts of the deposit body, we carry out a comp rehensive studies, is The including geomorphology, sedim entology and chronology, on the main features and the genesis of the comp lex deposit. Engineering works expose alternating layers of colluvia and alluvia w ithin the comp lex deposit. Thermolum inescence ( TL) dating p rovides a temporal frame for the p rocess of the river incision and fluvial sedim entation in the past. The samp les in the bottom and in the top of the deposit give TL ages of ca. 197kaB1P. respectively, imp lying that the form ing of this deposit took about 60ka. D rills reveal the basal morphology of the comp lex deposit. 810m in the east, 710m in the m iddle to 1010m in the west. and 137kaB1P. The p rofile shows that the floor altitude varies from The comp lex deposit infilled an ancient deep trough at J inp ingzi. There are m any nickpoints along the J inshajiang R iver, and J inp ingzi is situated downstream of a nickpoint w ith an intensive downcutting resulting in the formation of its deep trough. W hen the steep slopes of the deep trough were destabilized, collap se would have happened and detritus subsequently filled the deep trough. W hen the collap se was of large scale, the J inshajiang R iver m ight have been dammed. A new river channel would have developed above the colluvia and incised the east bank, w ith new fluvial sediments formed, which resulted in the alternating layers of colluvia and alluvia of the deep trough.
