A Night of Love & Remembrance Taiwanese superstar Chyi Yu led her brother, Chyi Chin, good friend Jonathan Lee and Singapore s very own pop-star Stefanie Sun to perform at the Love & Remembrance Charity Concert held at The Star Theatre, The Star Performing Arts Centre on 14 November 2015 to raise funds for Ren Ci Hospital. Dubbed as the Voice of an Angel by her fans, Chyi Yu took the audience through a night of love and remembrance with her melodic voice and repertoire of timeless classics. The other trio superstars also belted out hits of their own. Together, their performance of many charttopping hits were pitch perfect for Ren Ci s first public charity concert after a lapse of 15 years. Ren Ci Hospital was chosen as the sole beneficiary for this concert sponsored by the Goh Lee Hiang Memorial Fund. This sold-out concert raised over S$2million in donations and ticket sales which will go towards patient care and help fund Ren Ci s expansion to meet the growing needs of Singapore s greying population. 2 ON THE NOTICEBOARD A Hat Trick for Ren Ci th Ren Ci Hospital scored not one but three poster awards at the 5 annual ILTC Quality Festival event held on 14 October The Festival aims to inspire, develop and promote a culture of patient safety and quality improvement and also to share best practices within the ILTC sector. This year s theme Quality: Translating Vision to Action showcased the ways in which quality can be implemented at the ground level to improve care. For a project that injects a new breath of life for chronic sick patients with tracheostomy, our signature See - No Tube, I Can Breathe project (also known as Trial-off Tracheostomy) won the Gold award in the poster competition. Two other projects namely 6S on Human Resource & Manpower Development Forms & Archives and Improving the Efficiency of the Archiving Records By 90% did well to clinch a Merit award each. GOING BEYOND ISSUE 22 We are CHCS-enabled! Since gone live in August 2015, nursing staff at Ren Ci Community Hospital have been adapting to a new electronic system and painstakingly worked with other departments to achieve successful implementation of the Community Hospital Common System (CHCS). CHCS is the common architecture to enable seamless transition of patient care between healthcare providers through systems and process integration between the acute and intermediate and long term care (ILTC) settings. The new system enables appropriate access to patient records, medical conditions and test results from external service providers to facilitate the continuity of patient care at a community hospital. In line with the implementation of CHCS, Ren Ci Hospital also integrates with Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) Electronic Medical Record (EMR) suite of applications which harmonised patient management and patient accounting as well as financing to support better patient care. A Tribute to Our Volunteers On the last day of October, Ren Ci Hospital paid tribute to a group of long serving volunteers in recognition of their dedicated commitments and selfless contributions over the years. 38 volunteers received their certificates of contribution from Chairman, Mr Chua Thian Poh at this annual Volunteer Appreciation High Tea. After the long service award presentation, several rounds of facility tour were conducted to showcase this home-like nursing home to the volunteers. We are indeed fortunate to be supported by these volunteers as we strive to deliver holistic care and give every patients and residents hope for a better quality of life. Ren Ci Hospital would like to sincerely thank all volunteers for their fervent contributions over the years. 2

3 FROM THE FRONTLINE Fun with Sand and Clay GOING BEYOND ISSUE 22 Thanks to the funding support from South West and Central Community Development Councils (CDCs) through National Arts Council s (NAC) WeCare Arts Fund, Ren Ci began seeking community partners to bring in different art forms that are new for the nursing home residents. Animagine, a company that nurture artists and storytellers through art and animation agreed to customise their sand art programme to suit our elderly residents. About 50 residents at Bukit Batok nursing home were introduced to sand art for the first time. They learnt attentively during the 18 lessons and enjoyed expressing their creativity through sand art drawing. Over at Moulmein nursing home, residents got their hands dirty using clay to make pottery, another sensory stimulation activity that improves cognitive processing and support better hand and joint coordination. Conducted by Post Museum, close to 60 residents participated in the four sessions of clay art. Ren Ci actively seeks out community partners and funding opportunities to inject new activities to cater to the different needs of our nursing home residents. Van Donation Boost Mobility To support the elderly to age in place and not missed out on rehabilitation, proper transportation means are required to ferry these seniors with limited mobility, such as those using wheelchairs. Thanks to the kind sponsorship by Mr Eng Bak Chim and San Wang Wu Ti Religious Society, Ren Ci added two new passenger vans, boosting our fleet of retrofitted vehicles to serve those with limited mobility and transport them to our day centres. Both sponsors donated close to $73,000 each to cover the purchase of the passenger vans for the elderly requiring day care or day rehab sessions. A Gift of Good Nutrition A festive donation portal was launched by Abbott Nutrition on 1 November 2015 to facilitate donation of Abbott Adult Nutritional Supplements to 29 voluntary welfare organisation (VWO) nursing homes in Singapore. Ren Ci s nursing homes at Moulmein and Bukit Batok are the identified beneficiaries. During this special donation season which runs till 29 February 2016, for every 10 units of Abbott Adult Nutritional supplements donated, Abbott Nutrition will contribute additional two units (except for Ensure Plus range) to the nursing home. Visit to give a gift of good nutrition and support the health and well-being of our needy seniors residing in these nursing homes. 3

4 Befriending Beyond Nationality In conjunction with International Migrants Day (IMD) in December 2015, a group of migrant workers visited Ren Ci Nursing Home (Moulmein) on 13 December, befriended our residents and presenting them with kind tokens of goodie bags. This befriending event was organised by Migrant Workers Centre (MWC), a bipartite initiative of the National Trades Union Congress and the Singapore National Employers Federation, which seeks to champion fair employment practices and the well-being of migrant workers in Singapore. GOING BEYOND ISSUE 22 The theme for IMD 2015 is Migrant Workers Give Back, to recognise the contributions of our pioneer generation and the coming together of migrant workers and Singaporeans as ONE nation celebrating 50 years of achievement, pride and nation building. A Jolly Good Time In the month of December, Christmas spirit filled the air at Ren Ci s wards and nursing homes as various volunteer groups came to help with festive decorations and spread the season cheer to our patients and residents through their caroling and parties. At the Community Hospital, the festive celebration began as early as 6 December when Credit Agricole (Suisse) organised a Christmas party at our multi-purpose hall, bringing plentiful fun to our patients. There were also lots of activities in the wards put together by Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan, as well as students from Nanyang Polytechnic and NTU Regular Service Project (Elders). Our nursing homes were also buzzing with Christmas events and outings joyfully organised by OKH and Silveray respectively. The grassroots volunteers at Bukit Gombak also gave our residents a jolly good time and not forgetting the streams of carolling by caring volunteers from the various churches. Thank you to all volunteer groups for bringing Christmas merriment to the wards and homes, showering their love to make sure that the seniors with us celebrate Christmas in a way that is very personal to them. ENGAGING THE YOUTH GOING BEYOND ISSUE 22 CAMP REC II Forging Relationships, Building Bonds The second edition of Camp REConnection is back with the aim of bridging the gap between the young and

32 youths spent the last four days of 2015 with Ren Ci, learning dialects and interacting with the seniors under our care through games and craft activities.

Language barrier or not, our nursing home residents enjoyed the youngsters company and were won over by their bubbly and candid nature.

They learnt to commute and do everyday chores in wheelchairs and even had a blended diet, just to experience the food which elderly with swallowing difficulties takes daily.

The youths put up a wide repertoire of performances from singing 'oldies' to dancing the latest KPOP dances. Prior to the party, each elderly was given a goodie bag and polaroid memento.

5 ENGAGING THE YOUTH GOING BEYOND ISSUE 22 CAMP REC II Forging Relationships, Building Bonds The second edition of Camp REConnection is back with the aim of bridging the gap between the young and elderly! Ren Ci s recurring partner, NUS Students University Scholars Club (USC) packed this youth camp with fun-filled activities that enriched the youths, and at the same time, entertained the seniors residing in Ren Ci Community Hospital and Nursing Home from 28 to 31 December youths spent the last four days of 2015 with Ren Ci, learning dialects and interacting with the seniors under our care through games and craft activities. In fact, many of them felt that the conversational phrases they learnt during the dialect lessons boost their confidence in communicating with the elderly. Language barrier or not, our nursing home residents enjoyed the youngsters company and were won over by their bubbly and candid nature. The highlight of Camp REC II had to be the experiential learning which the youths got to feel what it s like to be in the shoes of the elderly. They learnt to commute and do everyday chores in wheelchairs and even had a blended diet, just to experience the food which elderly with swallowing difficulties takes daily. Being New Year s Eve on the final day of camp, the seniors were treated to a memorial year-end party. The youths put up a wide repertoire of performances from singing 'oldies' to dancing the latest KPOP dances. Prior to the party, each elderly was given a goodie bag and polaroid memento. It may be a farewell party for the youths as they conclude the 4-day camp, but it was certainly the beginning of new friendships with the elderly. Charissa Tan, 17 Through my interactions with the patients, there is one who struck me very deeply. He is a man who has difficulties speaking and trouble writing. I could see it in his eyes that he really wanted to talk to me but he just couldn't. So the next day, I went with new plans to try to communicate with him. Some failed, some worked. Every time I managed to guess what he wanted to say, he would nod his head and smile, and that very smile gave me a sense of satisfaction and affirmation that I have made his day as much as he has made mine. My takeaway from this experience is that patience, empathy and compassion are the very key to interacting with them and touching their lives. Felicia, 16 This camp has truly taught me to appreciate my own grandparents so much more, because I am so incredibly fortunate to still have them around and I should treasure everyday spent with them. Geraldine, 16 I feel that I managed to step out of my comfort zone. During one of the karaoke sessions, I approached one of the elderly residents and we started chatting. She is an Indian but she knows some hokkien and cantonese which I am quite surprised and that made me more motivated to master the dialects as well. Yi Xuan, 16 5

But legendary Chyi Yu, easily dubbed the queen of Taiwan campus folk songs, only needed her magnificent voice to mesmerise a full-house predominantly middle-aged audience. Few performers can achieve this feat and together with powerhouse singers Chyi Chin, Jonathan Lee and Stefanie Sun, it was indeed a night of remembrance filled with love and for a good cause. Chyi Yu kicked off the three-hour show with her English cover of Memory, from the musical Cats, before her other hits such as Your Smiling Face and Dream Field. Paying tribute to Singapore s 50 years of nation building, Chyi Yu surprised everyone with her own rendition of Dick Lee s Home in both English and Mandarin which she sang effortlessly with her crystal clear vocals. The highlight of the night had to be the heavenly duet between Chyi Yu and her guest performers. Chyi Yu and Stefanie Sun wowed the audience with The Olive Tree, Chyi Yu s most famous opus and a lullaby Stefanie s father used to sing to her long before her international star status of today. Their rendition was nostalgic yet refreshing for this timeless classic. Next was Jonathan Lee who lamented that Chyi Yu s own songs were too difficult to sing and so he requested Chyi Yu to help harmonise as he sang The Price Of Love and finally, amidst the loudest cheers, Chyi Chin teamed up with his sister despite a nasty cold and put up a stirring performance of The World Outside and a cover of Faye Wong s I Am Willing. "Feel the positive energy around you. You are all angels, with your generosity. Spread your love, Chyi Yu s final words before ending her encore with Sarah McLachlan's Angel, was wisdom at its best, perfect for a night of love and gentle remembrance. ~ FUNDRAISING HIGHLIGHTS 6

7 Another Hair-raising Event The hairstylist team of kimrobinson returned this year on 17 November 2015 for another round of fundraising for Ren Ci Hospital, doing what they do best with their scissors. Led by Creative Director, Mr Daniel Ng, his team of hairstylists was kept busy from the start, snip and style non-stop for over four hours, making over 23 customers happy with their new hairdo. With a minimum donation of $68 (many donated more), getting a haircut by kimrobinson s hairstylist was a steal. Prior to this event, about 40 patients had earlier received their hair trimming at the wards, courtesy of kimrobinson s pro-bono service. Special thanks to Mr Daniel Ng and his hairstylists for yet another year of support. Dance for a Good Cause In celebration of Chongfu School s 100 th Anniversary, Chongfu Alumni staged a 2-night cultural dance extravaganza on 18 & 19 December 2015 at the Hwa Chong Cultural Centre Theatre. The same group of dancers came together again after a decade to do their part for their alma mater and charity. $134,631 (unaudited amount) was raised from the first night performance. The fund was donated to Ren Ci Hospital to support the enhancement of patient care. 6
